View Full Version : Nova GTE/GSI average mpg?
Am thinking of selling my everyday runabout (BMW 120D) which is pretty cheap to tax, insure and manages on average 50mpg, for a mint Nova GSI, now can anyone tell me what I could expect to get average mpg for the Nova? If I remember for years gone past I managed an average 42mpg with my Nova 1.3SR.
Cheers

My 1.3SR currently does 28mpg on a run............on fortieslol might improve a little with the Irmscher injection (engine is tweaked)
When it was newish I got @ 42mpg around the doors, I recorded on a long run to Dorset at 56mph (sad I know) 63mpg, genuine straight up:eek:
As the miles piled on the mpg dropped to low 30's
I would suspect you won't better @ 30's with an old Nova now with the mileage in my opinion;)

i used to get about 30mpg with an e16se fitted
You selling a 120d for a Nova?? lol
Apart from the drop in mpg and comfort and general reliability - the Nova will rot before your very eyes!

Do you want to use a mint GSI everyday, even in winter? I would be more worried about the car losing its condition and then value than the cost of MPG.
Between 30-35 i got with my old one.

If it runs good you'll prob get around 35 at a guess. If it isn't tip top expect below 30.
I used to get 100 miles to £10
In 1998 lol
a fairly well tuned 1.6 8V with an AST2 cam and T40's did 35mpg on a nice run... not being slow but not kicking its head in lol
Why oh why oh why would you want rid of a 120D for a poxy nova, if you 'need' the no frilliness of a nova just buy a cheaper less than 'mint' one (which would be most cars sold as being 'mint')
Thanks guys for the replies, its the wife complaining I have too many cars already, still deciding on buying a mint GSI or getting one that needs a little work.
Is there nothing you can do to prevent the rust from forming on the Nova apart from never taking it out of a heated garage?

A yearly clean underside and re-application of protective under seal (if needed). Maybe strip the under seal from underneath, have a good look, then use modern day under seal and colour code it so bad spots are visible. Just a lot of care and attention in that department

The best way to keep a car in great condition is to use it as little as possible sadly. To what extent you take that is up to you, but personally if I had a Mint GSI, it would be a fun car that had a garage to spend the rest of its time in rather than a daily driver. I wouldn't complain about novas been too unrefined, as air bags and ABS are for girls, its just GSi's are rare now and I'd use a lower spec and lesser value Nova as a daily. Its not just rust issues you have to worry about, but thieves who don't have many other easy target cars on the road to go for now.
Well the wife has now relented and approved another car purchase, so the BMW stays and just want a Nova for fun, still on the look out
