Is it wrong that i got a little moist when i first saw a 6R4 in the metal, (was only a few years back too lol)
Although im quite sure that second pic is a 205 T16 and not a 6R6?

i love how wide they were makes you wonder how they got through some of the stages (gate posts ect)
And i found an interesting fact that day too, they used a pair of 6R4 engines cobbled together with a couple of turbos and lobbed it in the jaguar XJ220:eek:

XJ220 was meant to have a V12 but only ended up witha 3.5l twin turbo V6
Ahh i mustve misheard the guy then, but he was adamant that the same lump from an R4 was the powerplant for the Jag!
love the 6r4's
wathcing them most weekend down this way doing rally days

sure thats colin mcrae old one
And the engine was a Geoff Goddard design (after his Cosworth/TWR days I believe) so as much as it might be based on a 6r4 there's probably minor similarities.
edit: Just looked it up as I was intrigued too, 6R4 lump > Cosworth DFV > TWR > Jag XJR10 > XJ220 is your tenuous link to the 6R4 engine, probably very very few similarities by that point!

Always thought the base for the 6r4 engine was a rover v8 with 2 cylinders chopped off and a pair of fancy 4 valve per cylinder heads? The mini centre back in the 90's had a genuine 6r4 with a tvr Tuscan rover v8 but they built it and used to sell the conversion kit.
Totally mad cars, guy local too me used to use his ex works one on the road then take it too pembrey the weekend and wipe the floor with the evos and scoobies.
tour of cornwall always attracts 6r4s...imagine my shock as FIVE of them pass me on the road :p someone i know has a rover V8 in the back of his metro...but i cant find the pics anywhere lol

nom nom :)
The v8's were a cheap easy conversion when A rebuilt goodmans engine was £24 and had a 6 month waiting list.
They did plan on lobbing 2 cylinders of a V8 but in the end the 6r4 engine was a bespoke built engine by mg rover.
The jag xj220 statement is too as it did use the 6r4 lump but obviously heavily modified being twin turbo etc.
The 6r4 was and is my fav rally car and having had the experience of going out on stage in a proper one I feel quite honoured. There's no over sound like one!

oh and it is the great Mcrae in that..

the 6r4 was actually designed as a 3l v6 with cosworth dfv valves. the man who did it was an ex cosworth man. oddly enough, a few years ago, i read that the reason it was done was because the whole rover-honda thing meant that rover had to rely on honda engines for the big 800 series.. the management weren't sure just how long honda would supply the engines for & wanted their own v6 just in case, but couldn't get govt money to design it... they could for motorsport though.
the jag xj220 was designed with a 48v v12 & 4wd in the 'motorshow' car, but when twr's engineers looked at it, they realised it was an unworkable design, and they had bought the rights to the v64v engine from rover.. they made it 3.5l & slapped 2 turbos on it & went off to race in the world sportscar championship... they were frighteningly fast, and it was logical to stick it in the xj220.
re the rover v8 ones... the rover v8 is crap. yes it can make power, but costs so much to do it that it is not a very good proposition... for club rallying it is acceptable because they basically banned full group b cars, so a replica made with a production based engine would be ok..

there was a 6r4 rep or a dam 4100 as the get called in the scottish championchip with a jaguar engine tht was ment to be 400bhp at one point lol 6r4s are by far the best group b rally car just for the sheer noise

The event was the Scottish rally in 1985, the inside pictures were at the start at the Marriott hotel in Glasgow city centr, the forest pictures are Achray Forrest in the queen Elizabeth national park and the Tarmac hairpin is the top of the old rest and be thankfull, the stage was the bottom road in this picture, I got a week off school to go with my dad to follow the event :)

That RS200 is very real and lives in Staffordshire. The owner is a member of my local RSOC group.
He now also has an genuine RS1700T which is a good way through a nut and bolt resto ;)

awesome chuffed with that would love to see these cars driven in anger hahaha
i bunked off school to see the final stage on the RAC in woolaton park in nottingham in '86. i like to think i saw the passing of an era.. but in 83/85/85, we used to go to sutton park in brum, and even though it was allegedly a micky mouse tarmac spectator stage, it was awesome.. to hear a full works quattro unleashing the fires of hell in the woods so it was echoing for ages was enough to make me mad about cars forever.
on my 21st birthday, there was a classic GP at donington, and the likes of which will never be seen again, one race had 12 maserati 250f's and then the sportscars, maserati birdcage, ferrari 250's etc, it was the best days racing ever.. the noise, the spectacle, the smell of castrol R everywhere....
i also saw the sauber mercedes group c racers at leMans in 91...now they were groundshakingly loud, and fast, proper fast.
i feel blessed to have seen these things

service will be at oulton park :)
the bit i don't understand is that the wrc is dominated by a british & a french team, and we have a wrc round every year, yet the british public don't ever get to hear of or see any wrc action.. i get regular updates on my free orange phone webpage, but for 99% of the country, it doesn't exist...
more kids think of ken sodding block when a fiesta wrc is mentioned to them
what idiots are running what is an excellent sport?? i think the new move towards longer rallies is good, the old rac really did run the length of the country, and this whole double running of stages is annoying. i mean, there are more than enough volunteers available to be used as marshalls on the stages.

not to bad here as oswestry is the base for the bulldog for midwales so i get to see quite a bit (although its only once a year)
we get the midlands rally in hinckley, they run a fantastic round the council office car park special stage, and the town goes crazy for it. then they run the stages at mallory park, mira test track, and the gamecock parracks at bulkington. spectating is banned at mira & limited at the barracks... so its not too great

Caught the last 15 minutes of it, pretty deluded of an injured spectator to blame the driver for crashing when the spectators were all over the road.
