Gearbox in question is the F20. If I remove the selector housing andd/or the 5th gear end plate will it give me any visual access?

If the covers are removed would anything need to be re-assembled upon re-fitting the covers or can they be removed and put back with ease?

Mate will be changing a diff for me but I wanted to quickly inspect things first.

Thanks

Remove the selector, then remove the full cluster to inspect properly

Ok but I'm asking if there is any reasembly required if I just remove the selector cover or 5th gear plate.

Yes,its very straightforward if its on the floor.
Removing both those will show you nothing.
Remove all the 11mm bolts on the end of the box, some go through 5th gear case also, then remove the 4 in the selector, remove the selector, then pry between the cluster case and the gearbox case, wiggle it out.
To refit...
Push cluster back in,wriggle it around and it can be a little difficult to get back in sometimes, some slot straight back in,others take time, wriggle it and push like you would when refitting the whole box to engine? Turning the diff by hand can make it a little easier.
Then refit the selector, you will see where the fork has to slot between to go back in,bolt up,check you get all gears-done.
If matey is removing your diff then he will need the cluster out in any case (sad joke lol)

Cheers chaps.

I've got all the oil seals and gaskets to put on anyway so I'll need to know but I wanted to try check make sure things were cushty before he came to change the diff. If it's all funked or there is visible damage elsewhere then a new box would be the best. I've been told that getting access to the gear cluster I can try wiggle it, if there is play then bearings will be gone, if no play then bearings are good.

Are F28 and F20 diffs the same/inter-changable?

I would imagine theyre very different.
Regardless of play, you will feel/hear if a bearing is shagged like you can a wheel bearing

Gotcha... still gonna try and see if it has any play and have a listen too.
