View Full Version : diesel in the engine....
My dad just collected my 1.0 ohv nova from its successful MOT (I am well pleased) and then topped up the tank for me with approx 12 litres of diesel.
He then ran it the 6 miles home saying it pinks a bit.
He thinks it will be ok if I run and and keep topping the tank (with petrol) to continue diluting the diesel.
Is this amount of deisel likely to cause any harm to the engine? Should I drain and dump the fuel?

I'd personally empty the tank then fill a good amount of petrol to dilute any residue in the tank.
definitelty drain and fiull the tank with petrol, 6 miles will definitely have diesel through the sytsem

it will just smoke abit lol i would take the tank off drain the fuel out of it then flush with petrol and refit

ive run mine on petrol diesel mix a few times lol best bet is to drain half or so and fill it up with petrol then keep topping it up with a bit of both lol
I put 50litres of diesel contaminated petrol in my vitara when I had it, just made it smokemore than normal, and was a bit sluggish. if you can be bothered then drain it and refill, if not just stick some fresh petrol on top, and run it out.
and to answer your question of will it damage the engine: No, It's just a little extra upper cylinder lubricant lol
It will be fine - diesel in petrol is the 'good' way round, especially in a basic carb engine. 12 litres on a full (42 litre?) tank won't be majorly difficult either, if the petrol pumps weren't currently run dry by mongs then I'd say just keep it full and drive it out. Might be worth draining the tank though in the current climate if constant refilling is an issue.
lol @ it pinking a bit
Fill the rest up with petrol and run it about for a bit, will be fine, i put some moody petrol in my XR2i many moons ago, was only about ten litres, i was told the owner put a quarter of a tank of diesel into a half full petrol tank, nope was the other way so ended up with nearly ten litres of diesel, ontop of about five litres of petrol already in my tank, 'borrowed' one of the salesmens fuel cards and went to brim it, god it smoked like fook on the way there but was fine once diluted!
it will be fine, just brim it & run it down to empty, then brim it again.
Diesel in petrol (for anything with injectors) is as bad, if not worse than petrol in a diesel as the injector filters gum up and the pump goes spazzy.
On a carb engine its fine though.
Thanks for the advice everyone, by the time I called my dad he had emptied the tank. So I'll just fill it up with petrol and see how she goes.
I am chuffed though, a 28 year old Nova staright through the mot with no work or even checks! Looking forward to collecting from my dad's next week and living again with the joys of 993cc.
I have been driving the car around for a few weeks and put a few tanks of fuel through it, it all goes fine except, at low revs under load the engine misses.
Is this likely to be fuel or ignition?
An example is sitting at 30 mph in fourth gear which used to be fine for the car, it pulls exactly the same but misses, all gears at low revs when pulling there is a miss so i tend to have to drive a higher revs.
I have checkied the ignition timing and I have checked the carb settings, the only unusual thing I noticed is the idle speed screw on the webber, it doesn't seem to speed the idle past 1100 rpm no matter how far I screw it out?
Any advice would be apprecated thanks although I assume the diesel has moved dirt into the carb?

has it had a good service recently?? may just be as simple as tired spark plugs and/or leads....
Yes, I put in new plugs, points and gave the distributor inside a clean, it still has the miss.

I once ran my old rover coop on petrol diesel mix, had the same power, smoked its head off though! And then my centre section started rattling like mad, turned out i had melted the inside of the cat due to the highet combustion temp and all the unburnt diesel in the cat lol!
I spent time tonight pulling the carb apart and forcing heaps of wd40 with a syringe through every single orifice I could find on it, I will see tomorrow going to work but it all looks better anyway!
WD40 is near as dammit diesel lol
you want carb cleaner!

I did think about that actually and went to halfords this morning, pushed carb cleaner through it so I'm off in it this affternoon, see what happens.
What type of wally would put wd40 through if deisel was originally the problem?
That's right, me!

Aye. Its also a sure fire way to ruin a CAT as well. Again, no problem on a shonky old Nove :)
Well a massive improvement, only had a few small misses today, the diesel must have pulled ome rubbish with it and choked up the carb. I'll see how it goes over the next week but fingers crossed!
