well im exactly half way through my engine conversion
old one is out today and the new one is assembled as much as possible, bar head and cam carrier.
whats going to go wrong then? place your bets nowwwwwwwwwwwwww LOL
i really enjoy working on my car - but this is crunch time now. it really is. im well nervous? (not the right word)
but anyway, after all my troubles. it cant go wrong now.
EVERYTHING on that engine bay has been recondtioned or replaced. BRAND SPANKING NEW rebuilt bottom end, b+ head from march this year. 40s reconned. recon bloody gearbox!!! 6k ast2
*prays to the heavens*
you will know how i get on anyway................ there will be a part ex add in for sale section - wanted mk3 astra gsi trade or part ex? LOL
oh well... here goes
Good luck mike i posted the chokes this evening, you should get them friday latest if not 2morro..... im off on holiday so chat in a week, post my bits tot eh address in the package, cheers
will
Any reason why you havent fitted the head and cam carrier? Would have thought it would be easier to do while the engine is out.
If everything is new and you have built it correctly you should be just fine.
Good Luck

Good luck keep us posted!!! :)
Should be fine.
Only thing left to do is remove your rear seats and trim down your spoiler ;)
Jim
P.S. I'm starting to get the feeling I'm being left behind in the 1.6SRT40 stakes...hmmm :|

First Dan pulls out a blinder and beats on on ehte 1/4 mile - and now its looking like mike could well do the same - with all that extra downforce from that rear WING he should have no trouble :D
good luck Mike - all you need to remember is if you have anything left over you shouldnt it aint gonna go.
Make sure all mounting/gasket surfaces are spotless all bolts and screws are spot on and take it easy for first 500 miles - no ragging it.
We have faith brutha! You should too
is the bottom end being chemically cleaned?
would recomend geting a pot of calliper laquer and painting it. if you ever get any oil leaks its far more3 obvious where its coming from. also looks the muts nuts.
make sure u get new genuine seals/gaskets. prime the oil pump before you put it on.
make sure engine is set to top dead centre and cam set to tdc aswell b4 fitting head. iv made that mistake before and never cheked, luckily it already was :D i was lying in bed and woke up thinking feck i never checked :| so got up to go check lol
just dont rush anything.
make sure head is fitted along with gearbox before you fit engine, more stuf ends up getting damaged trying to fit whilst in the car.
fit dizzy, leads after. also check all nuts/bolts and jubilee clips are tight. leave putting the oil in until your ready to turn her over. this way there is oil dripping down inside the engine which stops that initial wear youl get until the pressure has built up.
run it in with coolant mix at 10% as its summer... the more water the beter as water transfers heat better than coolant.

:D VERY happy chappy.
well its been a long hard day
but i drove the beast 8 miles tonight :D
KNEW sommat was gonna go wrong.... it could have done - brake servo hose - forgot to connect it, noticed itloose when i closed bonnet! and jst before pulling away i thought SH!T my fron wheel nuts are only finger tight!!! PMSL
ALL IS WELL! going tomorow to get the mixture setup and the timing spot on.
gotta try answer all the qns now!!!
Will: got the chokes this morn. fitted them, need to tune tomorow to see if there alright :D carbs appear to be spitting randomly a lot more than they used to - possible mixture incorrect?
techie: i complete built up the engine. bar the head and anything upwards. e.g head cam carirer rocker, inlet, 40s dizzy.didnt have trouble with any of it EXCEPT because of the lower alternator - and i couldnt tension the cam belt until it was in car. i found it awakward to do the water pump up tight and even get in there with the right tools! got it done though. reason behind not building it COMPLETELY was i wanted it to be a bit lighter, as i had to raise it into car using a 2 tonne trolley jack.
saragsi: thanks!
slim: rear seats are staying, but spoiler is long gone! (form my plans anyway - have something new up my sleeve :D) and it will meet aprovals
dave!? lol what can i say
wise: thanks for the optimisim! MUCH apreciated! but this thing isnt for playing with dan - quite yet. i need to find a final drive for the gearbox, and need a few bits tweaking here and there. also need it to run in. it needs a bit more money spent on it before i can compare to dan or slim. but itll get there
ade only thing i had left over was a blade fuse that was lodged between my engine mount and block!!! god knows where its from!
dicko bottm end was acid dipped and other chemical crap i didnt ask about. its painted in gloss black :D 3 coats :D all detailing like the oil breather tube at back of engine, dipstick tube, GEARBOX, and other things like that are picked out in flat silver hammerite :D LOOKS MINT! seals gasket setc all replaced. oil pump primed - need to put more oil in though as i guess its filled the filter up and got round the engine now - its on min.timing spot on - checked and DOUBLE checked that about 4 times - my first engine went back via this method
COOLANT................ i havent got any and im running pure water - is that a problem until the winter????
ill post some pics up
im going to wales this weekend, and probly clean my car there, as you can imagine its covered in shit everywhere and all my shiny bits have got finger prints of some description on them :( looks well trick now with brake servo and other engine detail in silver - and chrome covers galore under there now, ONLY thing left is a header tank and catch tank for oil.
nice1 mike kent wait to see her
Yeah sounds all good, you also live in Midlands WOW didn't think that there was many peeps drove around in decent Nova's round here, looks like I was wrong :D

:D sounds like you are a happy chappy indeed mike - just made the effort and read your whole post.
I am sure that before long you will be pouring some more money into the engine bay to give it a few extra horses to cath up with Jim - and then set your sigts on dan.
What do you mean the spolier is gone?
lol - you loved that spolier!
COOLANT................ i havent got any and im running pure water - is that a problem until the winter????
Err yeah, Steel block and plain water, what do you think is going to happen to your waterways and rad in your nice clean engine...rust thats what. Antifreeze (coolant) also has rust inhibitor built into it.
Best thing to do is drain out the water, refill with a few litres of antifreeze and top up with distilled water. Much better cooling and no corrosion.
