I have always thought about buying a welder but I would probably end up making a mess of whatever it is I'm welding. One thing I have always been told by professional welders though is avoid gasless!

If you have an indoor or really sheltered place to weld, then get gas, it will be better.

Definitely get a gas one, if you didn't know already a MIG welder, and the more powerful you get the more thickness you can weld. While most metal on a nova isn't too thick, you may well end up welding some of the thicker stuff, so having a versatile welder is a good bet. I bought a Clarke Mig 135 from Machine Mart a few years back, and have done plenty of welding on my Nova with it.

Dont even consider gasless, theyre absolutely terrible.

is this the one, and would it do, comes with gas, a mask and all the gubbins??

The mask that comes with it will no doubt be utterly hopeless. I highly recommend you get a proper autodimming helmet, they aren't that expensive any more and make welding so much easier.

Machine Mart = ****e. Get at least a half decent one. Gasless welding is pointless.

Let me know on how the welding goes for a epileptic, as I'm epileptic and I have put off getting one for that reason.

when my gti is built im going to weld some some stuff with my clarke 90 and do some nick break tests to destruction if i have time.
Because according to most people on here they are glorified soldering irons.
The amount of people that have probably gone out and spent £100s more on the advice of folk on here when theres no reason to if your only welding your nova's.

i use a clarke pro90 thing with 0.6mm wire, it survived a stay with baxter and is still going strong

to be honest i needed to weld a few brackets of about 5mm thickness and went and got some flux gassless wire from halfords, did the job very well! nice penetration and no bird crappy look.

i have to add though i have used flux wire before and it was absolute ****e!

This.
I have a miller welder, bought it on offer about 8 years ago, was about £325 iirc but like the old saying goes, you only get what you pay for. With your temper marris you will have axed a Clarke welder after 10 mins ;)

i have a clarke 151TE...nothing wrong with it. welds car panels fine...picked mine up for £200 refurbed on that bay place. and you can get auto dimming masks for £30 which work find as long as they are fully solar.

I use an ARC welder, its pretty damn good but can be tricky/hard to weld thin metal

gas all the way, I got a cheep gasless off the 'bay for £50 with a load of wire, tbh it started out awfully, but as i got used to it it can be quite good at the odd job, more useful outside on really windy days, but in the end if you want a good end result get a gas one, altho I do think if you master gasless then when you swap to work with gas, the results will be 10x better than before.

Seriously Alex I would ask the doc, my mrs, who has the same condition as you know, tried using my welder, she didnt 'breakdance' lol, but felt very dizzy, had to sit down for long while, I get it checked mate

there are loads of different grades of welding glass, and especially the cheap reactive ones.. some really don't hold much light back if you are doing long welds.
