Anyone ever done this? I'm thinking if you raise the platforms nearer the floor, you could gain say an extra 20-30mm of lowering. Good idea? bad idea? mot passable? discuss. :)

I'd rather turret the rear and use coilovers, the boot floor is mega thin so you would have to fabricate the legs to support the new spring mount, it's easier buying mk2 escort turrets and welding them in I'd say,

ive looked into it john and started doing it to one of my novas, cut around the spring seat to remove it then need some tube the same size as the spring seat or bend a strip to go round it and weld it. do it so the spring seat it sitting in the tube/strip, then weld this back up into the chassis leg. hardest bit is cutting the chassis leg neat enough, a big hole saw would be ideal but good luck finding one

Here is a hatch leg that I removed, it's upside down but gives you a inside look at the avalible clearance

It's not really required though, as You'll run out of arch space before you are unable to fit shorter springs. This would just allow more travel, but for little extra work turrets and coilovers could be fitted.
It would also come under the category of chassis modifications, and mean you would technically require an IVA test, and Q plate. but then the XE chassis leg mod is the same, but no one cares (myself included lol)

really? I bought a 4 1/4" saw for my fuel pump hole last week. was only £12 and Morse Cobalt so decent. they go up to about 7 inches

ok i stand corrected lol

but raising the spring platforms is a free mod. plus turreting doesnt get over the issue of arch clearance either

ok so i'm gonna defiinatley run into trouble with mr mot man then. Might have to move the stub axles instead. (this ok for test?)

I don't want to fit coilovers if i can help it. Using fixed shocks and springs will still give a decent enough ride. It'll only be a 1.4 so no track days etc. Oh and i have a saloon, the arches will swallow decent size rims. )

wont fail the MOT imo, all they care about is if its rotten or not

The mot man is going to fcuking love me then lol

Why do you need this mod John ? Wheel fitment?

No, want to go low. (and still retain a half decent ride)

Cut out the inner arch and replace with tin sheet welded to the inside of the quarter, then coilovers and turret the rear, this will allow good suspension travel and hopefully retain a good ride with no clearence issues.

john my estate before it was an estate was pretty facking low and still had a good ride imo, the ride is more about which springs you go for than anything.

having literally just consulted an MOT tester he says 90% wouldnt even notice it and even if they did then so long as it is done properly ie full seam weld then the most they can do is put it as an advisory, it is not and MOT failure!!

what springs/shocks did you use luke?

ahahaha you dont want to know lol. well the shocks were fine, they were 16 point adjustable spax rsx ones, the springs were a porter special

to be honest, any chassis modifications like that don't really come into the test, so lang as they are carried out well and the welding is to a good standard.

Moving stub axles is fine for test providing it's done safely

Ah when you say about moving stub axles John you mean as in raising them up via a bolt on bracket etc?

I looked into different ways of cheap mods for rear lowering etc, i thought of placing a tube spacer on top of the shock mount to take out shock travel so i got no bottoming out of the shock and could lower it more, but it's all a bit bodge etc, i might yet turret the rear, I'll see once i get to the point of tyres fitted on rims and how low i can get it etc on coilovers.

Q plate.

No such thing for many years now.
