does anybody know the correct way to do it, im sure on my old one i placed a drill bit in a slot on the gbox? mines being a bitch to drop to second ever since i messed about with it when i replaced my engine. cheers :thumb:
get a 3/16" (4.5mm?) drill bit
get the drill into the little hole & lock the linkage.
undo the clamp
set the stick in neutral between 1st & 2nd, and jam it there, tighten the clamp.
remove the drill
job jobbed

cheers guru of novas, where is the hole? and do you mean over to the left?
Hole is in selector turret of the gearbox, usually filled with a little rubber plug.
Yes you hold the stick over to the passenger side of the car.

looking from the front won't alter where 1st & 2nd is......
don't forget to refit the plastic bung!!!!! you can/will lose all gearbox oil from it

Does the drill bit need to slot right into the selector?

as far as you can push it in then it should lock the linkage in place !!!

if you push it in and the linkage springs back then yes you need to push it deeper inside !( no pun intended) lol

Does the gear stick have to be in s particular place to slot in?
looking from the front won't alter where 1st & 2nd is......
Or which side the passenger sits on. lol
Disconnect the linkage and twist the selector in the gearbox until the drillbit slides in quite far. This "locks" the gearbox selector into neutral between 1st and 2nd, then you place the shifter stick in neutral between 1st and 2nd, then tighten everything up.

Had this trouble myself a few months back, got the same advice you got, failing that, there are step by step idiot proof directions in the haynes manual for a nova upto a 1600. Worth buying yourself one :thumb:
