joined up the black and red to the solenoid?
Is it actually turning over?

No it's not turning over and the black and red wire is attached to the solenoid by a spade connector and still does nothing

touch the smaller wire onto the bigger wire and see if it turns over make sure its not in gear though

use a bit of wire to bridge them as the smaller wire has to still be connected to the solenoid

was it doing the same thing when the old starter was fitted ?

if so if your battery is in good condition check that you are getting a live down to the red and black wire when you are trying to start via the key

i had the same problem with mine ended up putting 2 starters on ended up being a earth fault
to test the earths get a jump lead and put it on the battery negative and on the engine somewere if it cranks its a earth fault

^ Good idea

You can check if the black/red is getting 12v when you turn the key too, if not it may be the switch/wiring for that.
