View Full Version : engine management
does anyone know how far you can go with engine mods until the standard ecu (chipped) will just not give out the power the mods are capable of?
that sounds a bit confusing -
what i mean is that there will be a certain point where even a chipped ecu is not up to the job that a mappable ecu could perform.
does anyone have any opinions or experiences as i'm still heavily moddifying my 1.6 8v just not sure whether to ditch standard ecu or not.
and no i dont want 16v and no i dont want throttle boddies! i dont know why.. i just want a competition spec standard looking engine.
thanks for any info
In the Nova Competition Build Manual it outlines how you can get 170bhp ,iirc, from a 1.6 8v engine while retaining the standard ecu along with the standard injection system. It uses bigger injectors, head work and cams etc.

The point is that after market ECUs are more tunable because they've been designed to be changed. Afterall they are sold for many different engines. You are looking at the best part of a grand for this though as the ECU is about ?500 and mapping could be about another ?400. This would be cheaper if you find a manufacturer with a ready made map.
If you decide to go this way give me a call, as I am in discussions with Omex to do mine and they are one of the leaders in this field.
yeah i have the comp build manual- and it does require a modified ecu.
i was looking at omex but its hard to get an accurate cost build up as i dont know what sensors and other parts i'd need.
they make it sound so simple in their brochures but i bet when you actually go to get it installed the price your expecting would double due to all the hidden extras!
i cant have a pre-programmed ecu/chip/map as the engine will be so unique it will need a map exactly to my engine speck- which isn't going to happen- as there aren't any out there! well i doubt anyway.
novax - if you get any info that might be of help to me please pm/e-mail me- i'm looking to finish build in september so have a while yet.
even the maps that companise give you for a "type" of engine, arent very accurate, and infact ive spent weeks mapping different modifications into a K series and the map changes a fair bit from day to day, ie the seetings you had yesterday arent the same as todays lol
omex are good, but for top notch kit you want to try DTA, Motec and Magnet Marelli (but they are the more expensive end of the toy market)
richard rag(g) (Mr Omex) will be very helpful if your upfront ahd noest about what you want. he wont fuck you about if you dont fuck him about.
face it, if you want a decent form of adjustable control over your engine it WILL cost you. there is no cheap decent way round it, the uni chip is the closest to cheap and nearly good that you can get and even that still needs mapping
