View Full Version : Rear arch Filler options?

Hey all, when I bought my car the prevoius owner had put new rear arches in, however the inside's were not finished. So there's a gap where the old arch has been cut away and the new one overlaps it (if that makes sense lol). Whats the best filler to use, flexy?
Your input is always appreciated.

Fiber glass filler normally has flexy properties.

If you can get it, get black fiberglass. Normally used on boats and stuff, it's flexible.

SMC is a carbon based filler which allows a bit of flex before cracking.

Is it only me that thinks this is a bodge?

My understanding is that the inner arch has been cut away for repair, the new outer arch was welded on and the inner was never finished? Get it welded if so...

Hi TonySR, you well may be right as for it being a bodge, just how I received car. The black line is the depth that needs filling.....

Weld it up and then some seam sealer for it to stop any water ingress then some underseal. Don't go nuts on the welding though as you don't wanna distort the metal

Weld that and the rear 1/4 will need painting again! Lol!

Tbh most are done this way as you cant buy inner arches so most are glued on then fiber glassed.

SMC is the stuffi was on about, is very good.

Was gonna go down the route of SMC, then as suggested seam sealer. Thanks to all lads for comments....

To be honest whoever fitted those needs a good funking slap to be honest !! theres still rust bubbles in there !!!!!!!!!
if it was me i would not weld it as it will distort all over the place ! then you have got a good afternoons work skimming them with filler then paint etc ! go get some sikaflex 221 seal it up let it go off job done !

His rebuilding the car so I doubt a bit of filling will bother him. Worth doing properly whilst it being rebuilt imo...

readily available on ebay actually.

that repair is shocking, i would cut off the outer, fit new inners then new outer. total cost of panels is only £80 and will out live the rest of the car, if you bodge it you will be re-doing it next year anyway

Ah that's good. I've never seen it any where bar the place the bodyshop get it from... Well worth buying some.

On the inner you want all clean metal. Weld from that to the outer.

The drivers side looks warped to funk... Remember you don't have to constantly weld it too, sports are fine. And they make less heat and warp less.

No. Spot sealer. It's like tiger seal. Bead of sealer, align panels then spot weld. Joint sealed correctly.

errrrr ment to update this thread not projects, blonde moment.....

Hey guys, just a quick update, as I was told my rear arches were "shocking" and quite right they were, I have ordered a set of these bad boys -http://i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii501/vinny-jones/arches.jpg

Am also considering going the whole hog and getting sills replaced, but, struggling to find panel welders in my area, reason being the whole car is stripped in my garage unable to roll. offplot is kindly helping but just in case does anyone else know or could recommend someone in north wales? Also are the sills a big job?

Your input is also appreciated lads......

if you get a full sill and not a skin sill then it is a pretty easy job imo
