I'll be starting a major project this summer concerning my FTO and the first step will be relocating the fuel tank into the spare wheel well?

Any recommendations?

My first thought with regards to fitting fuel tanks in wheel wells, is why spend hundreds of pounds to put it in a worse place than standard? I mean, If I had to choose where to put 70kgs of fuel and tank, i'd put it low and between the wheels, not high and behind the rear wheels.

Good point.

I could possibly have it sat right in the back of the boot.
That'd be almost the same position as standard.

Just need the room underneath.

I assume you have a stripped interior? would a wider/thinner tank in the rear foot well fit? keeps it nice and low.

you making it 4wd like mitsubishi should have done? lol

No stripped interior... want to keep the back seats if I can. lol

ah I see, looks like the wheel well, or against the back of the rear seats is the only option then. what are you putting under the car?

Only problem with putting it at the back of the boot is I'd have to lean right in at the pumps :-D

Well Lewis if you think about where the engine is and understood the value of balance then you'd be saying something else.

Or if you get ar5e ended you'll get sprayed with unleaded.

Make sure what ever tank you buy has a roll over valve fitted. Dont be tempted by the cheap shÃ*tty eBay alloy efforts as IMO there just plain dangerous. Foam fill it, its dirt cheap for fuel tank foam chippings & stops fuel slosh/weight shift immensly.

We could all preach from the purists perch of perfect practical positions, but the reality is where's the heaviest part of a nova?

The engine, perched precariously in front of the front wheels...

So 100kg+ high up & in front of the front axel.

yes, but unavoidable, as the alternative is a pack of wippets harnessed to the crossmember. but surely placing weight high and behind the rear axel is equally bad? or do 2 wrong make a right in this instance? (genuine question, I'm not being funny lol)

Lower is preferable to higher for the tank as there's a greater weight lower at the front. That said it's not practical if you want to run a rear diffuser, resulting in it living higher up than a standard tank would. The compromise is reduced if you have something wider & deeper [rather than taller] made up.

Unless you go huge on the tank circa 100 liters+ you'll never get the chassis perfectly balanced without physically adding ballast to the back [and that's with the rear framed, battery relocated & washer bottle too].

I have a fuel cell for sale, I doubt it will fit in your spare wheel well as its not the right shape but its foam filled/double skinned (plastic and metal)

Pm me or look at my old for sale threads....
