Best tyres/sizes to fit Nova SR alloys (3 spoke Ronals)

Got a set of 3 spoke SR ronals fitted to my nova...

Its currently wearing the standard 165/65R14's that vauxhall state they should have but was wondering if any of you guys have found better handling/cornering with a different size such as 175/65/14's or even 185/55/14's fitted???

Or just a particular brand??

Am determined to keep these SR wheels as i think they really suit the age and style of the car but any advice is appreciated...

I've got SR 3 spokes on mine, and i'm running 185/55R14's, and personally I think they are perfect. Look really well, even on the 5j rim, handle well and still give a comfortable ride for normal driving. brand wise I'm using Avon ZV3's all round, decent non-rotational pattern, good grip, good wear rate, good price. I really can't fault them

GTE/GSi's were 175/65/14 standard

I intend fitting 185/60/14's to mine for my SR.....one day (got some Goodyear NCT2's to go on.........old pattern)

There was 185/55 on my old SR but I changed them for 165/65's, I personally don't like wide tyres on small wheels. :)

We currently have 175/65R14 on the SR - running Hankook Optimos. Can't complain, it handles and grips well.

i ran my old gte with standard size(175 65 14)which where quite alright to be honest.......

i also run some fox alloys with (195 45 15) which made the steering a little funny seemed wrong imo.......

then a bought some standard astravan steelies from vauxhalls and fitted them with kumho (185 55 14) rubber and have to say they should have came with these when it left the factory imho............

I run the alloys (three spoke) with 185 60, good grip but have lost grip with the rear end due to poor shocker on the rear, doesn't matter what tyres are on it then.

My sr came with steel 13 165 70 and i am running it with this as although there is a little less grip on corners, the ovewrall ride is slightly softer for normal driving and that is what vauxhall actually released it as in the first place.

The 60/55 aspect ratio is the depth of the tyre

185/60 = 185*.60 = 111mm

185/55 = 185*.55 = 101.75mm

To calculate the rolling diameter

14" in mm = 355.6mm

Rolling diameter is

185/60/14

355.6 + (2x111) = 577.6mm


185/55/14

355.6 + (2x101.75) = 559.1mm

185/55/14 are smaller in diameter than 185/60/14

lower ratio should provide slightly stiffer tyre wall, depending on brand/construction

ive ran 185/60 14s yoko's for years never had a problem cornering ect


the smaller the sidewall the less flex the tyre will have (less roll)

185/60/14's also have the same rolling diameter as 175/65/14's so don't affect the speedo
