View Full Version : Drive Other Cars?

OK, I'm 25 in a little less than a months time. Nobody has given me DOC on my insurance due to my age, being under 25 (except a few years ago where Quinn gave it to me, but nobody since).

Nova insurance is due something like 9 days before my birthday, and the daily is some time later in the year (August maybe?)

So if I renew the Nova's insurance immediately I won't get DOC until I renew my dailies insurance many months down the line? And I'm thinking if I don't insure the Nova for the 9 days to take my policy start date until I'm 25 I'll get it? But that will mean I need to cancel the tax as I can't have a taxed and uninsured vehicle for 9 days?

Both cars are currently insured with Sky.

Suggestions?!

Suggestions?!

I suggest you go and get very pissed as it will be your 25th birthday instead of worrying about crap like insurance policy's!

Its not necessarily an automatic right by age, so worth checking first.

You could just SORN the car for a few days, although I think you get a grace period.

Old and wise. Maybe lol

I could SORN, the matter is complicated by the fact tax runs out at the end of this month so I could not bother retaxing until insurance renewal if I delay it. Have been reading up and it hasn't mentioned anything about a grace period.

I guess I'll ring for some quotes and ask about it then, much rather not drive the Nova for 9 days and get DOC earlier if possible.

Do you often find your self in these situations then? Having the need to drive someone else's fully insured car

9/10 times DOC is just 3rd party cover anyway.

No where official states a grace period but in general the DVLA either give (or it takes them) 14Days before slapping you with the fine stick anyway

Sounds like 9 days might be worth risking it I can imagine them being pretty slack, although might be easier just to SORN at the end of this month.

Turbojolt what's with all the quizzing lol Yes my mates often have interesting cars I want to have a drive of but I don't feel comfortable due to lack of insurance cover.

Specifically states 'No driving other cars' on the policy docs tho, so they must send you new ones?

Only gets added at renewal not mid term and if your occupation is in the motor trade most main stream insurers still won't give doc regardless of age.

And is that generally added when you reach 25 Mr Blue_peg? I'm not in the motor trade is all good there!

New sorn laws if car isn't insured but is taxed you will get a fine from dvla it's to try to cut down driving without insurance, so if not renewing you now legally have to cash the tax in

I heard nothing when I swapped my insurance over to my brothers car when my head gasket went

One of the few benefits of being in the automotive industry as opposed to the trade, is that I'm just an engineer lol. Drawback is having to jump through hoops to get discounts at trade places lol

Iain, don't bank on getting the "DOC" on your insurance when your 25.

It only came in recently mate if it's still taxed I'd sort it though or it's like the sorn fine works the same way now

It was only a month or two ago, when my step dads van went pop a month ago he swapped his insurance to the Volvo and left the van outside with just tax and didn't hear anything either

Might risk the 9 days if Burgo is recklessly ignoring the rules for months and not getting fined lol

Adam every time I've insured my cars for the past 2-3 years I've asked about DOC and been told 25+ only, so I am banking on it.

Jack

DVLA are slow though so its possible they could send you a fine a few years down the line for a car that was untaxed for a couple of days lol

I'm sure I read somewhere there was a grace period but can't find the source now so don't bank on that lol

What about temp insurance? TBH though its probably just worth SORNing for a few days.

Hi Iain,

please PM me your details, I'll see if we can squeeze through the DOC entitlement seeing as you are so close to your 25th birthday.

Thanks

Hi Ollie. Been on the phone to someone from Sky about the renewal quote this morning already, they said I could renew before my birthday and gain DoC on my birthday, so that's handy.

Both Sky and HIC have said I can have DoC, however my favourite company so far who'll cover me with any mods up to 165bhp (and cheapest quote too) is Brentacre who will only give me this if I wait till I'm 25. So might end up SORNing after all.
