hdi's are good engines albeit a little thirsty for diesels,i had a 2.0 hdi partner and a 306 a few years ago, good power but 1600 hdi was way better on juice! 307s are galv bodies and mostly plastic panels so no worries on rust!
The 306 was a very good car.

Yeah they are good on fuel, dont get me wrong, just the 1600hdi is better thats all,not sure if they do a 307 with that engine?,and the 2000 is thirsty in comparison to that. (i had a 1.6 berlingo hdi then a 2.0 partner)
If they do a 1.6 hdi then go for that, better economy and cheaper insurance beats the extra grunt all day long.

Yeah i noticed the mpg a lot mate really, whatever the quotes are,the 1.6 was awesome on fuel whereas the 2.0 was just, good.
Dont listen to the "its ****/french" comments.
Ive had a few french vehicles in my time and never had any more problems with them compared to vauxhalls.

Because a nova is so much more refined eh?

you have far more feed back from the steering wheel and can actually feel the pedals you are pushing so much nicer to drive

You ever driven a 205/309 gti??
Going on 80's frog tat vs 80's vaux here btw

Agreed Luke, 80's/early 90's french hot hatches are good. Naughties french diesel hatches not so imho.

+rep;) *slightly biased* lol
They are all what you described (except sh1t lol) feedback is ace,the 309 gti imo was a better car, very good.
Back to the modern day stuff,i suppose its what experience you have had with them really, ive had a few and nothing ghey or major to report here.

Theyre a clunky shift actually,especially between 2nd and 3rd.
When i worked at a clutch and gearbox centre they certainly werent the most popular fix, that title was,and probably still is held, by vauxhalls mk4 astra box's.Easy to do though as you can just pull the cluster, and or take diff out without removing the bellhousing.

If it is a high miler ensure the particulate filter has been replaced and the FAP fluid tank has some additive in it.

a few common problems ive had to deal with on these:

fuel additive system sometimes throws a wobbler
abs sensors
injector seals sometimes let go, resulting in a 'chuffing' noise and a build up of carbon around the injector
gearboxes, as mentioned earlier
and ive replaced shed loads of wheel bearings on them too

not bad cars on the whole i suppose...
