i know you can do them in the mk2 as we was going to do ours, but means chopping out the bulkhead and buying a complex mount kit, the mk1's have alot more room and the mount kits are ready available from alot of rally motorspares places so it can be done.

Its been done LOADS - use google!!

Albeit with a c20xe - but principle is exactly the same...

too mount engine properly he will need to cut dizz housing off so engine sits as close to bulkhead as possible. t5 box is only option imo and even then its not the strongest depending on power, but the type9 will blow its self to pieces.

chassis mount kit, etc, just look on turbosport.co.uk for info and as will has said its been done thousands of times with the xe...all you have is an intercooler to fit...so may be worth looking into the cosworth yb builds and see what boxes, axles, half shafts etc they use

You will also need a rwd sump and pick up

Why would you choose a let over a cosworth block?

cossies are getting expensive. lad i know broke a yb engine and had £800 just for the crank!

Cos a cosworth lump is 2.5k and a let 1k tops

I see last time I looked for them they were floating around the 1500 quid mark so didn't make much sence going for a weaker and harder to tune engine

Depends what you want power wise if your only looking for about 300bhp that can easily be done on a let with standard internals for very little out lay.

problem with cossies now is finding heads that are ok to use, xe parts are alot more plentiful and cheaper in general as dont have the cossy brand to them

So basically, you need to find a load of old carlton or manta bits to sort the engine, and then whatever people use to fit an xe to an escort.

And by the time you've rebuilt the let, it will have cost as much as a cosworth to fit..

I was thinking that and I bet a new bellhousing adapter from the likes of stb won't be cheap!

If you run an omega box no bellhousing is needed and mowgli no because you will need all the same parts to fit a cossie lump like box rear axle custom made prop mounts etc the let is the cheaper route

I know what I would do as the mk1 escorts arnt cheap and this type of conversion isn't going to be cheap either way, cosworth all the way imo

i'm not guessing a mk1 escort is being fitted with a let for show.

And i'm also guessing that as a pinto was actually fitted into a mk1 escort, then a yb will pretty much slot in, with ready made bits from the rally boys..

Escprt single piece prop 1800 manta sump n pickup pipe chassis mounts and its in or adapt manta mounts to mount to crossmember. Bellhousing adapter is about £180 aswell

still got to find a good yb which could cost £2.5k +

But from the rally boys there's loads of ready made bits to fit a let, there's been loads converted to xe and it's basically the same conversion. Yuckspeed can supply the lot as can a number of other supliers.

A t5 will take close to 500hp so would need a serious let to break one. A type 9 would be ok as a temporary box on the back of a standard let, I had 244hp on a type 9 with a cosworth v6 and it took loads of abuse aslong as it's an xr4i box.

Has anyone got a link to even a decent XE conversion on a MK1 escort to help the guy out at all?
