its in a mk3 astra, i was gunna strip in today for spares as they are getting rare now but didnt have time, its complete not been touched, i know all the injection system is the same, as are the shape of the blocks. I think its just the stroke of the crank or the pistons that are different

very nice.i see you have retained the manifold which is shaped like 4 large penises. what were your reasons for this? nostalgia, torque or the love of a phalice?

i like to look at a nice big penis once in a while im also a tight ******* who doesnt want to pay £70 for another inlet manifold that will add 10bhp, rather spend it on some nice airfreshners

cheers chris,

Not really an update as there no pics but i now have a new deadline.

3 weeks to get the car rebuilt that includes been sprayed and all back together, main reason is ive sold the daily car as i was fed up with it, no point in buying another daily car and sorting out insurance when i can use the money straight on the nova.

All the welding will be done by saturday, hopefully sprayed during the week and to finish off rebuilding the engine.
It still has mot until feb 2013 and still insured so i could tax it and be on my way

Will be getting loads of pictures soon and also better get spending on some paint and welding materials

Markd89
29-12-12, 07:37 PM
Spent £150 at eurocarparts today, got everything i need to complete the car from anti freeze to exhaust bits and suspension parts, moved the nova into its new home next to the mini we just rebuilt , cracked on with the repairs and only have a few more bits to do, need to finish welding in the crossmember section and do the n/s rear arch. Other than that all the welding is done !

its windscreens you have to worry about more than paint. they end up feeling like my welding mask if i dont cover them properly when grinding

Andy
29-12-12, 09:13 PM
All glass.Not just windscreens

Markd89
29-12-12, 09:22 PM
That's true when we did the mk2 escort all of the glass had welding and grinding marks all over them because they weren't covered up

Markd89
30-12-12, 08:54 PM
Finished most off the welding today, i only have to plate the passenger side door lock to smooth over with filler tomorrow.
I patched the other side off the crossmember as it wasnt to bad, used 1.6mm steel and seems strong enough
Went and bought some more seam sealer and sealed all of the welds that ive done upto now :

Ran out of gas ! typical on new years eve so couldnt finish the welding.
Removed n/s door lock and the ariel from the wing for it to be smoothed
Seam sealered the a panels and fitted the n/s wing
I also sprayed the mk1 dash i had last night, i was going to flock it or change to a mk2 dash as the colours where all different, all i used was mattblack paint, cleaned it really well and sprayed a thin coat on, i ran out of paint as it was only a test.
It actually hasnt come out too bad, will give it a few more coats and see what the outcome is, most probably will peel off straight away, i didnt think it would work atall and look really crap, few pictures and also the colour is was.
It was a " duck egg " blue colour but my switch surround where grey, brown and blue so it will all be changed.

To save chopping the dash to remove it there's a fast way to remove the steering wheel. Take the bolt out at the pedals on the steering shaft, take out the white caps top and bottom near the stalks, unplug the wiring, twist the stalk holder plate and slide the lot out

I realised this once i removed it ! which was typical, i do that method everytime i need to remove mine as my steering wheel will not come off no matter what, its had several pullers ect on it and wont budje.
Cheers for the advise tho :)

Just a shame i chopped first before thinking

Got a few more pits painted for the dash, believe it or not it the paint hasnt fallen off yet, i tried to scratch it and didnt mark it atall which i was suprised at, the dash has had 4 coats and the switch holders ect have had 3 coats, on some parts ( not many ) its abit patchy but they are hidden anyway so im not bothered, a few pics of the painted parts :

In the bottom pic Mark, looks like the right hand heater matrix pipe has sustained damage, might be worth getting it repaired/replaced as mine was damaged in a similar way, after id fitted the engine and everything and was piping it up, as soon as i claped the jubilee on the pipe, it crushed and failed even though id not tightened the clip up much, thought id best point out while you can easliy access it, and have time to source a repair/replacement:thumb:

Oh and youre a git, i hate removing/refitting my dash, its such a pain compared to a mk2, but i think youve just convinced me to save up and get it flocked in black

Markd89
03-01-13, 08:40 PM
Good spot spud, will get it replaced must have been when i removed the engine.
Also as for flocking, joff was going to lend me his flocking tool and i was going to do mine myself + other interior bits
I did a rough work out and i could do my full dash, quater cards , center console and b pillers for around £40
The only reason i decided to spray it was spare of the moment, i had a bit of satin black left in a can so thought i'd try it and see what happens, turned out pretty good, although i havent tried to fit it yet so it may all flake off lol.

Smoothed the n/s door lock and repaired the bottom of the wings + windscreen pillar, also prepped the rest of the car + de-greased the engine bay :

also managed to line up the o/s wing abit better as its not the original

http://i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff445/markvtr/IMAG1529.jpg

Just ordered 2 front brake hoses and i recieved most of my suspension parts today + more loom wrap

Markd89

Painted the glovebox and put the dash together to see what it looks like
Finished off all the welding on the arch and filled it all nice and smooth
Smoothed off the ariel hole and the n/s lock.

Pretty much ready for primer everything is rubbed back just abit more filler on the front valance and jobs a good one :

Got the car in primer, stone chipped the front & rear valance also the aches.
Bought a space heater as it was 3 degrees when i was spraying which wasnt a good idea but turned out well.
Flatted the primer on and chucked the paint on
Few niggly bits that im not happy with but not bad seen as its only cost me £150 including everything to prep and paint.
Will wet and dry the paint tomorrow and polish it up to get a nice shine and begin rebuilding

Lots of pics so be warned !

Awesome progress. Has the primer reacted a little in the rain tray area? Red looks so good fresh out of the gun! I have massive respect for anyone willing to have a crack at painting a full car. I'd be so worried about ruining it trying it. Have some rep!

Markd89

Thanks for the input and cheers for the rep simon !

The paint is actually ford radiant red, i was going to do it flame red ( 79l ) but i could get the 2k radiant red for £8 a litre cheaper !
I used around 4l of paint but gave 4 good coats, theres a few areas im not happy with with if i wanted a perfect job id have gave it to a bodyshop to do and pay 2 grand.

Ive not wet sanded the full car and g3 / g10 and gave it a coat of wax will get some pics soon and can start rebuilding her back up

Looks good :) Braver than me doing it this time of year too!! Whats the little clarke heater like? I've got an old panel heater but it burns through gas like nothing else to actually get the double garage warm, and I know those tube heaters are ridiculously good when they're a bit bigger.

To be honest, its not brilliant but its ok for what it is. ideally i could do with a bigger one and yes it has burned through nearly a full bottle within 3 days although it has been on for over 30hours straight.

It warmed the car up fine and keeps your hands warm well it nearly melts them lol
I'm liking for a bigger one, even a diesel filled one would be ideal.

Sounds fairly similar to mine, although mine holds the temperature ok, it just burns through it like mad when you first start it as you're just heating the roofspace really. I wouldn't mind a waste oil burner but I don't have the 6 foot in every direction it needs free as a 'melt zone' while it burns up white hot lol

Bit of bad news, upon closer inspection of the paint job the roof has gone fish eye ( reacted ), unsure as to why but it looks as the some oil or grease was still on the panel so the roof will have to be re done.
I wont be building the car back up until this is done but as the weather it now to cold to spray it will have to wait.
On a plus side i sprayed the alloys and also got a picture of the boot after it was g3 then g10 with a coat of wax

Shame to hear about the roof, obviously you must of degreased it but I guess there was still something on there, that aside it looks a very good job!

What mask were you using? I was going to get a compressor myself to paint but don't fancy spraying solvent based with just a charcoal mask

Ye it was degreased same as the full car just one of them things, im unsure what mask i have to be honest, ive had it for about 6 years and you buy the mask filters everytime they expire. All i know is that it wasnt cheap but its very very good

Its perfect, you can hardly breathe ( the instructions tell you steps to control breathing ) let alone smell anything

Hmm, you got a picture of it? Or does it say what make it is?

I'd get a compressor tomorrow tbh but I wanna do it properly, i.e not die! lol

Mine is basically this :

That image is from ebay and is NOT me lol

You can get the removable filters for that type which is alot better as the older ones get all clogged up.
You can get a decent mask for around £40, mine was tripple that but was years ago.

Ah yeah that's what I've got, that's a charcoal mask, not really suitable for 2k but most people use them anyway lol

What size is your compressor? There's lots of decent ones on ebay for sub £200 I'm looking at a 50L one which puts out 14cfm, it will do the job but just need the ventilation side of things sorting out as I'll be working in my 12 X 6ft shed.

For ventilation the best thing to do is get an old car radiator fan and hook it up to a car battery out the door, thats all i did it may pollute the environment but we are all going to die at some point anyway lol

Youll be suprised that most bodyshops use that sort of mask as thats where i got mine from, if they dont use the airfed system they use the 3m masks .

I dont know the details on the compressor as its 30 years old and has no markings on it what so ever, it only just rungs off the 13amp socket but sometimes blows fuses, ideally it needs to be wired up direct
