edit, weld look **** i know, iv been doing LOADS of welding these past few month and felt quite confident untill today when i tried welding 3mm steel haha, it just melts through....
its got loads of strong tack welds in and iv stomped on the well (its not budging)
i then used galvanised paint inside and outside, then used some sealer to seal the few little gaps and then painted again with pound store paint. still need to underseal but that will be done this week

like this

http://www.corsasport.co.uk/board/viewthread.php?tid=238883

but without hacking it to bits haha... i think its a poor guide myself but explains how its removed i suppose

i.e i got the screwdriver through the vents without damaging them or folding them rite down like shown in the link.

its fiddly thats for sure and even more awkward to put back together but if you've got a magnetic screw driver you may find it easier

although its ALOT of work ahead im chuffed to bits with it :D:D

as far as im aware its a early 20XE from a GTE (there's no C on the block)

fair enough its been stood for 3 years + (well greased/oiled) and its unknown mileage, i dont think its that bad...

it came with pistons but he said they wont fit as its been bored, but how much by? i do not know!

still need a lot of bits before it'll be anywhere near a complete engine but it gives me the incentive to take my time and do a good job of it.

who knows... it may not even go in this corsa!?!

plans are for now:

smash the baby valvers puddings in
get a engine stand
get a decent torque wrench
find out the bore and plan what pistons are going in
clean a lot of bits and possibly paint were necessary
new rings
new main bearings and big end bearings
ARP bolts

basically start at the bottom and work my way up

im not aiming for top race spec (just a very healthy 20xe) so in a way im hoping the bore isn't too much or il be looking at 'out of jeddy budget' pistons etc..

update

decided seen as im wanting to do a good job of the engine i rang about and found a garage local enough (at Stockton) that said he'l check it all out for me.
he's going to check to see if the blocks decent and clean it all out, check the crank (possibly balance it if needs be), check the head and possibly clean it....
i dropped it off as he was closing so give him a few days to get back to me with some £numbers and we'll get started.
no point throwing a load of money that im short of at an engine thats scrap so thought id best get it checked by a pro

decked my car haha
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg841/scaled.php?server=841&filename=abcd0011n.jpg&res=landing

also

when i got back i had 30mins ****ing about with one of the L piece's i have.

place thats got my engine has just contacted me...

£35 for pressure testing and checking the head wich he says is really good chuffed

hes checked the block and confirmed that the bore is done well and fairly recent and measures the size to run the 86.5mm pistons...

he's now removing the crank to check that aswell

brilliant!!

iv now started putting SOME bits of MEC up forsale for cash plus standard as iv not long insured and taxed her so il get my use out of that

Jedro

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg823/scaled.php?server=823&filename=photo0011ie.jpg&res=landing

hes also checked the crank was balanced rite aswell and it was :)

core plugs ARRRGGGHHH

after a good solid hour of wrestling like fcuk i managed to get 1 core plug out the front... literally got to the point of full body weight on a pry bar to get the little twunt out.... iv started on them now so no going back :look:

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg684/scaled.php?server=684&filename=photo0035q.jpg&res=landing

what was left of the little cnut!
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg708/scaled.php?server=708&filename=photo0037f.jpg&res=landing

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg543/scaled.php?server=543&filename=photo0036w.jpg&res=landing

wish i had just left them if im honest but the plans are to get them out, strip every nut and bolt off the block, bearings out, pressure wash it, paint it red and start from a single piece of metal (the block). il put the new core plugs in once its painted...
had enough for tonight. people made it sound easy removing them but these dont want to budge

david dixon
29-04-12, 10:24 AM

a little birdy told me it was a good idea hahaha

Lookin good mate!

Did you just paint the headlining with normal rattle cans or is it special paint?

did all the interior upper plastics with poundstore primer and paint and the roof lining with paint mate. the upper plastics are still mint even after having a 10ft trampoline bashed in the back hitting off them but the roof cloth has a few marks here and there, would probably be better off doing it with some type of fabric if your planning doing it

oh, also won a ZLET/LEH oil pump on the bay :D

im thinking about doing this with a 1.7td pick up pipe... after searching the net for a bit this seems like the easiest/cheapest option that will surve its purpose.... the 1.7td pick up is the rite diameter and has the rite flange to connect to the pump, just needs extending

like so

picked up a tape player (YES!! A TAPE PLAYER) for you younger lot of you that dont know what they are, they are brilliant haha!!

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg687/scaled.php?server=687&filename=photo0045e.jpg&res=landing

then i released some frustration on the core plugs and got all the fronts and one of the backs out.
they were that hard to get out and i hadnt made a start on the last two on the back so i thought best just leave them ones alone...

the sport went back to sport seats today, it was great driving to work early this morning with only one seat in hahaha...

the seats have minimal wear and the passenger ones comes with a *rare* storage draw thing...

had to clean all this crap out first (no after pic, i forgot)

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg135/scaled.php?server=135&filename=photo0067lc.jpg&res=landing

the draw thing

not much of an update but had a spare slot this morning so...

bought these

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg546/scaled.php?server=546&filename=photo0084us.jpg&res=landing

old v new, ZLET v XE

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg233/scaled.php?server=233&filename=photo0085kk.jpg&res=landing

gave it a quick clean up and fitted a new seal

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg210/scaled.php?server=210&filename=photo0086vv.jpg&res=landing

oiled all the crank and bearings ready for it to go in (this weekend hopefully)

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg713/scaled.php?server=713&filename=photo0088oi.jpg&res=landing
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg33/scaled.php?server=33&filename=photo0089x.jpg&res=landing
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg838/scaled.php?server=838&filename=photo0090r.jpg&res=landing

thats all for now :)

update

gasket sealed this

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg814/scaled.php?server=814&filename=photo0095y.jpg&res=landing

fitted the new crank bolts, toque down to 50nm, then stage 2 was +40 degrees and then minus 60 degrees

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg254/scaled.php?server=254&filename=photo0096j.jpg&res=landing

also put loctite on the threads

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg37/scaled.php?server=37&filename=photo0098f.jpg&res=landing

once all the crank was in and spinning smoothly i whipped it off the stand to do the crankshaft oil seal (easier to get in at it)

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg687/scaled.php?server=687&filename=photo0103d.jpg&res=landing

fitted it, small amount of gasket sealer round the outer edge and a quick fingerprint of oil on the inside

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg16/scaled.php?server=16&filename=photo0101r.jpg&res=landing

then i check the cogs inside the ZLET/LEH pump, seem fine by eye, gave it all some fresh oil and put it back together and fitted it with a new gaskets and seals etc..

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg204/scaled.php?server=204&filename=photo0104s.jpg&res=landing

basically just used half a litre of fresh castrol gtx 10-40 on stuff

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg163/scaled.php?server=163&filename=photo0105sa.jpg&res=landing

only thing i had to change to fit the actual oil pump was 1 bolt because the socket wont fit in on the normal 10mm head bolt

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg850/scaled.php?server=850&filename=photo0107n.jpg&res=landing

and iv still got this issue to sort out...

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg28/scaled.php?server=28&filename=photo0106e.jpg&res=landing

think its next on the 'to do' list

:)

I hope you haven't used semi/fully synthetic oil jedy boy....

Nova_Tek
12-05-12, 09:26 PM
Are new crank bolts a must? Are they stretch bolts or normal?

david dixon
12-05-12, 09:30 PM
They not a must, they can be reused unlike rod bolts.

Jedro
12-05-12, 10:26 PM
the bolts were new as far as im aware but i got new ones again to be sure...

why not semi synthetic davey boy? i used fresh 10/40 castrol gtx on the bearings and in the pump

I think your suppose to use mineral oil to run it in mate but surely a drop won't hurt? Failing that I have som engine assem lube you can use

Jedro
13-05-12, 03:43 PM
their in now mate, dont fancy taking them back out and having to renew the bolts again... il remember for the rods and that...

what damage could/will it cause?

david dixon
13-05-12, 09:40 PM
it wont bed in mate, when you fill the engine with oil put mineral in!

Jedro
14-05-12, 08:35 AM
take back out then? renew bolts again?

Andy
14-05-12, 09:00 AM
It will be fine,i used normal engine oil, just to build, then filled up with mineral oil.

Edd
14-05-12, 09:11 AM
Are you meant to use mineral first on a fresh engine then ? Even if assembly lube is used ?

david dixon
14-05-12, 09:20 PM
Yes use mineral, engine lube is only for inital start up, mineral oil is a bit more harsh and will allow the piston rings to bite into the bores! as soon as you put semi in thats the engine ran in as it will no longer bite in.

Jedro
20-05-12, 06:04 PM
decorated my coil today :)

can of red devil, some electrical tape, some pound store prime and silver and 15 spare minutes

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg850/scaled.php?server=850&filename=photo0129r.jpg&res=landing

and as for using castrol david... i think im going to take it back out and change the bearings after all. so may aswell get some mineral oil. watch this space
