What sort of milage is the engine?

not sure mate. done headgasket and bores are still like new fitted new oil seals in head at same time and new water pump and belt

Any tapping from the top end? I know its common, so it wouldnt put me off. Just curious.

no mate there was no tapping when removed but it has bin out car 6 month so i would say it will tap for a bit on first start up till oil gets round again. can get it running on floor if needed.
