View Full Version : Combo C c20xe
So I bought a 1.6 LPG 2002 Combo off eBay 2 yaers ago - still taxed and 11 months MOT as a non-runner...
After many failed attempts to get the z16se going, I gave up. I tried a new ECU set, new crank, cam and EGR sensor, loom, injectors and new key!!lol
So I left it for 18 months until just before Chrimbo when I bought a 1993 Cav Sri 16v and a new MTech conversion kit (1200 Euro new! lol)
Block drilled and tapped for new chassis mount:

Later alt and bracket removed and alt converted to run earlier v-belt

C20let friction plate and c20xe pressure plate fitted, so I can use teh F23 (with new mount fitted)

Mount offered up (and modified) to F23 (ignore bolts - they are just to make sure it fits!)

I genuinelly didnt mean to slap an xe in it - I was forced to, due to that stupid z16se lump of scrap!
Good thing is - they dont rust! They must be galvanised, as there is a dent where the paint has been scuffed off and its lasted 18 months outside in the rain and its bare metal!? lol
Cable shift too - so it feels awesome!
A bit backward... engine removal.....

those z16se's are dreadfull. My mate had one in his mk4 astra 4dr saloon, and replaced it with a z20let lol.
Worth chucking on ebay that engine, his one went for +£300 lol
They sell for good money - plus the ECU sets are worth £150 ish!

lol that cav looked in good nick too!
I love the diesel vans we have of these at work, go well an take everything you through at them!
I am hoping it will drive like a car - unlike the Combo b! lol

Are you citing the LPG to the xe?

nice work on the conversion, what was involved in the wiring side of things, especially to get the gauges working?
Cav looked mint aswell!
Cav was clean actually, but engine was soooo quite (and low mileage for once!) I couldnt resist....
Wiring is easy (but then I have done it!) Rev counter works off the crank sensor signal from the xe loom and you need to use a x12xe temp sender and re-tap the thermostat housing on the xe to get it to fit.
Speedo just works off the wheel speed sensor so that stays the same...
It does need another box fitting to the exhaust, but to be fair the exhaust builder couldnt hear it running as teh fuel pump gave up!
Got another few hours on it - exhaust fitted - stealth!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/2012-01-28140802.jpg
Although ideally needs another box fitting as it resonates like a whore in the van! lol
Also got new tyres on the alloys I bought a while back for pennies and I do love these wheels since I saw the Courteney Combo a few years back...

Will get the interior finished (when I find all the bits!) and get it MOT'd!
get them rims fitted :thumb:
Lol - trying to decide whther to get them refurbed or not! Also need to get tyres!
Are you fitting the LPG to the xe?
this
Nope - not fitting the LPG - its a 10 year old system thats been sat for 3 years, plus I would need to swap the connectors etc.
CBA!
so is it free to a good home???? lol
Crazy idea binning the gas,be really cheap to run
Its not when you consider that I would have to get someone in to rewire the ECU to the XE loom (as you only use 4 wires from the original corsa ECU), plus the correct fixings for the XE inlet, plus a service (at least - it propbably would need new injectors too - whiach are £115 each), so I would be looking at about £5-700 to get it all done. But I would need to find someone willing to do it!!!
I see what you mean,it would take a long time for it to pay for itself then to financially warrant it.
Did a bit today - tidied up the bay...

Finished fitting the interior and then washed 2 years of dust and oil off it, ready for its MOT next week!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/2012-02-18150747.jpg
Oddest update ever?
Couldnt get the fuel gauge working due to the fact it also runs off the LPG ECU and the wiring was a massive whore - so went for the next best thing...

a 1988 Nova 1.2 fuel gauge 'hidden' in the glovebox....
No idea if it works, but I guesitmate that it has about £20 in the tank, so it could be right! lol

When I mentioned a standalone gauge or fuel I didn't think it would end up like that.... Prope r pikey
I was going to get one from Demon Tweeks, but they were all £60 plus and you need a seperate sender - my method is much better! lol

will, questions,
a, what did you do regarding the fans as im aware there ecu controlled on the combo?
b, what pedal did you use for cable conversion
c,do you know what colour the clock temp gauge is or did you reuse the combo engine loom ie left it in and modded it to fit?
Basically - you have to use the orginal ECU to control all that stuff!

Astra mk4 pedal converted to mount onto the combo mount
cheers for the pedal info will,
i presumed the wiring would be just this,it will annoy me as i wanted to rid most of the wiring im fitting a old isuzu td in the place of the dti crap, have you any more info rregardig any issues you came across i should be aware of?
Not really - you have to link up the crank sensor signal from the new engine to the original ECU which was a bit fiddly, but the pedal was the most frustrating!

finally got sorted will, wiring i removed the majority of the combo dti wiring and tagged into the ecu plug blue/brown with a rev counter signal from the alternator as my engine doesnt have a crank sensor,
this has awaken the epas ecu and knocked my battery light out but has made the rev counter go crazy, not that bothered though
the pedal was pretty frustrating trying to figure out whats what but after some oxy acetylene and a some careful planning its all done and working pukka
Good work, it's deffo the crank signal that eludes most!

yes it was a tricky little sod and tested my patience but its all in and working fine minus rev counter s ive removed the needle and not really too fussed,
guess i could rig a crank sensor up if i could really be bothered,
just intercooler piping and i can get it for mot,
hows yours running?
Yeah it runs lovely, it's not that fast, but with epas and everything working, it drives just like an oe van tbh! Only done around 200 miles though, I just don't use it! Lol
I am on fire at the moment... Lol
Check me out, modding two at a time...
