Only needs a BS number if registered after 2001.

Limp as per my link lol

When the new registration format was introduced in 2001, regulations governing the construction and display of car number plates were revised. These revised regulations apply to the number plates on any and all vehicles registered on or after 1st September 2001. They also apply to all replacement plates made and mounted on vehicles on or after the same date.

And if its a old car, if the number plate was made after 04 it must have the markings. I found that when i got pulled.

Does that mean that the pressed steel euro style plates are no longer legal?

So long as they conform to BSAU145d and use the correct fonts, markings etc then yes they're legal.
