So....
Where to start, for some reason i got the urge to do a Saloon, so one day i spotted this advertised (baring in mind i was not working at this point in time!)
So got on the blower to Will and with in a fortnight (30th November i think) it was sat on the drive, with me once again question my self on what the hell i was doing! LOL
So once it arrived it's just sat patiently waiting to be worked on, im gathering parts slowly and planning what i want to do to it, so far Ive worked out i want it as low as possible on 14" banded SR steelies, lots of retro goodness and some type of Turbo powered lump, yet to decide what!
The main part of building this will come once the track car's sold on,
But for now heres some pics of it and a small vid of the 1ltr in full glory!
Cant belive the battery was not flat and it started first time after being sat for almost 2 months!

What you doing exterior wise ? Apart from the wheels
Thats sort of the plan engine wise Edd, as you can see im using it as storage after moving back into the olds! lol
And as for body work/exterior wise, it's in need of some attention to the rear of the sill/arch corners, and the rear wing/valance are where they go on loons, and a small scab here and there round boot corners window seals etc, it's got the odd dent and scratch on it, but im kind of tempted to leave it a bit "scabby" not rat look just as it is, but improve it slightly.
And just improve the inside, give it some new seats and tidy up etc, see how it goes really.

Looking good Scott, less rust then on my 92 GSI.
When shes all minty, slammed on some nice wide rims with a turbo hanging off the 1lt lump it will be awesome.

Umm not sure on making it "mint" and lol @ a 1ltr Turbo! Thats another reason i dont want to break the track car as the temptation will be there to keep the engine from it etc and I'll make no money blah blah!

nice buy! Its a good looking car, i was very interested in this to play with, but it sold fast, so i ended up with a combo van instead :(
Cant wait to see your ideas for this mate, i look forward to the progress.
You own 3 very nice novas now!
I love the track car, i just cant afford it, i love the colour, the livery everything, it looks bang on to me!
The yellow 3 door is dying for a snow plow
And the ideas you have for this sound great!

20-01-12, 03:25 PM
Cheers dude, i tell you what if i had know you like the track car i might of been tempted to do a swap on the bmw you had!
If you do like it though mate and you have some cash let me know we could come to some arrangement on it??
The mk1 jam yell is more then likely going to be sold also soon, as i want to have just two cars, an everyday car, and the loon.

lol lol id have love to have done a deal on the bmw, but we needed the money, and i doubt the mrs would have liked the idea, but she'd have loved thrashing it round the track tho! As would i!
I wondered when you would get a thread started!!
Cant wait to see this take shape - small block turbo will be awesome.

They took some time to figure out how was best to make them, but im sure Ive found the best way to do them and keep enough size so they look right too IMO.

Right a few weeks back i agreed to get my sister to pick some seats up for me from Simon TW, she was going to be at work near him so it made it easy for all etc..
Then yesterday morning i received a text saying her car broke down! :wtf:
So i had to get the Astra re-taxed as no way was going to endure the 1.2 for the trip to Preston and back! lol
So first thing this morning at 6.15 i hopped in the car and off i whent..
A 300+ mile round trip and 6hrs later i was home with a MINT set of seat's, these are the same style as in my 1.2L, bar the rear bench is the 1 piece, so it's perfect to re cover the loons bench with, then im placing the front covers onto some SRi seats i have..
(will get some better pics of these tomo.)
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/8325/dscf4062s.jpg
Then i decided to have a go at fitting my SR/GTE steering wheel..
WTF this was not good, i had a puller for years ago Ive used it a few times on other nova's, but this wheel was not playing ball..
http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/2701/dscf4057x.jpg
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/5541/dscf4056y.jpg
It's just pulled straight through the alloy of the center on the holes..

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/3673/dscf4058i.jpg
Also looked at fitting the center console quickly, lol anyone know where the screw holes are??
Left the Loon looking like this as i got very pished off with things... Not a good start really.
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/3282/dscf4054gv.jpg
PS: Can you remove the steering column by undoing near the knuckle joint under the dash, undo it's mount bolts etc and take it out hole so i could bash/or cut the wheel off???
Scott

Grinder!!!!!!!!!!!
scott.parker
31-01-12, 10:08 PM
Grinder!!!!!!!!!!!
Now i expect **** like that from Merris not you mate! lol
But seriously, can i remove the column as one? if so i will use a hack saw or grinder if i cant get it off..
The biggest problem removing the colum will be the locknut thing that has no head and needs chiseled round, other than that yes it's possable, as for the centre consol, I don't know how rare the brown carpet with no holes in it for the console are but I wouldn't be hacking holes in it lol, could be of use to a sport owner ?

Ive looked in my book, i think that shear bolt is for the ignition barrel, so you dont need to break it apart?? So it should come out then if i just undo the knuckle joint and take the shroud off etc..
As for Sport's owners, they can sod off, it's my carpet! lol I'll remove the one in the 1.2L to see whats under it, worst case I'll just place it in and drill my own holes!
Jeff16v
31-01-12, 10:14 PM
Aren't there two other shear bolts holding the column to the under dash metal also?
I don't know what came over me, lol, merris has got a mechanical form of torrettes :)

I'll look again, as i thought they could be undone?? IF SO I'll just try hack it off in place after removing the shroud and stalks etc..
lol get the stanley knife out
There is a shear bolt and a hex bolt that hold the colum onto the bulkhead mount,

Hacksaw/Grinder it is then, no one wants these old steering wheels anyway! lol
have u tried hitting it off? i just unscrew the bolt off get a 1/2inch 4inch extension and hit the shaft if it doesnt come off in first or 2nd hit put the nut on and continue
I have heard its harder to remove the colum on a mk1 with the dash still in.
REMEMBER! take pics of the destruction for other " show us your GM destruction " type thread lol
If you want ill swap a brown front carpet with holes for center consoles for yours?

Dude you should know im not unfamiliar with these cars! lol Yeah always tried them that way before i go to pullers, if your lucky undoing it to the top and a quick jerk might be enough, but this is firmly wedged on! stupidly in fact..

Looks like a good project scott. Have you got any wheels lined up?
Got a set of 14" SR steelies to get sent for banding, im stuck between 7.5J and 8J at the moment, as im not sure if 8J will work OK without flaring the arch loads!
That wheel has been on those splines for 27 years, so it will be tight! lol
I gaurantee the hitting method will shift it though. You need two people for the best effect - one applying hard pressure by pullung the wheel with both hands and the other with a drift/extension bar with a big hammer it will come off with two GOOD hits - betcha!
Now i expect **** like that from Merris not you mate! lol
But seriously, can i remove the column as one? if so i will use a hack saw or grinder if i cant get it off..just undo the nut abit and smash the **** out of with a hammer! dont girl around with it!

I've got these 7.5x16" et35 mistrals I bought for my loon that I'd love to see on a coupe in the future. Banded steelies are so 2011.... lol
I had the same problem when trying to remove my mk1 boat steering wheel with a steering wheel remover, so gave up and left it on lol

I collapsed the column on one of my Nova's getting the wheel off as I had to smack it so hard. Put it all back together and indicator stalk was touching the dash. Had to replace column.
I was just going say, if you need to save the column i wouldnt go smashing the back of the wheel with a lump hammer lol
scott.parker
10-02-12, 07:15 PM
Im going to resort to cutting the funker off now, as Ive tried all i can think of in terms of "normal" ways to get it off..
What exactly are you going to cut though? The metal centre? Without wrecking the column splines?
What exactly are you going to cut though? The metal centre? Without wrecking the column splines?
Good shout, I wouldn't do this as you will just have less to lever on if you cut most of the wheel off.
With another one I ended up taking the column off the car and resting the steering wheel on a vice and smashed the column out of the middle. It will just fall out then as its not fastened to the rack anymore. Bit of a ballache with the sheer bolt though to get the column off.

lol yeah, should really get the tools together an clean the car out some!
I cut a small cut into the center of the wheel, it must of given it enough give to expand or move etc, as i then placed the puller on again and would it off slowly with no effort at all..
Had a in depth look over this today, Ive noticed my front cross member where the tie bars mount is slightly rotten on the inside of the box (seen from under the car through the cut outs) So do i just get a standard one and weld it in place, or do i look to go lowered box section?

very nice inlet manifold scott. are you using a vxr turbo/mainfold set up too?

I'm jealous. What's the plan management wise?
Not sure, might try to test it out first on OEM and use rising rate on low boost first, or just use Omex etc..
But would need to get it to MEKmotorsport some how, so thinking get it running on Standard stuff and get Dave to fit/map it on stand alone at his place.. long way off though... might just get it in as a X16XE to get it on road then turbo it once got all the parts etc.
very nice inlet manifold scott. are you using a VXR turbo/mainfold set up too?
Yeah looking to use Corsa VXR set up as im not wanting to go massive on boost/power, anything over 150-160 will be enough to start with lol

Glad it got to you quickly. DHL great again.
I used standard management on mime mate with a rising rate reg and it was fine for that sorta power.
Nice to see the inlet have some boost through it again lol
Nice inlet manifold there mate
If it were me I would fit a new standard crossmember, you can still find genuine ones ;)
whats the general plan for it then? Bay painted after crossmember ?
Looks like that chap did a good job on the jamaica yellow

lol my saloon ended up like that, i was only having the rear arches tarted up, then bits of the doors, then the front valance, then before i knew it i had all the windows out, 2 new rear arches, doors off, boot off, and the full car was getting done! lol
Just read the whole thread scott, nice find on those seats, same as I had in my gazelle beige one originally.

So initially i wanted to go for some crazy 8" wide Banded steel 14" SR rims.. But after a lot of thinking and chatting to others who have/and own them etc i decided against the idea.
So then i was set on the search for something that would have the same GiRTH appeal as banded steels, but a more solid an also sorted finish so less mess and expense there..
I wanted to keep it euro and something slightly original, so stumbled upon these for a good price, they have been fully restored to as new condition, should be here next week, then i can see if they fit, and if not how much flaring of the arch i will have to do to make them fit! lol

The only issue Ive found is that the hub mounting face's have also been powder coated when they got refurbished, an as we know thats not good, so i will have to sand them back flat to alloy and then copper grease to stop corrosion etc.
Very happy!
Also noticed these are made in 1992 from the stamp mark and there genuine ATS made in Germany, none of this wolf race replicas!

think it will look mental! But need to get the front so so much lower..

Nah keep it eerily stuff, but if i did try anything it would be to try a hatch all in one on it, but i quite like the loon grill, maybe its the gash grey color the plough is! lol
Front end looks awesome imo
Get some Upol mid grey and do the lot, will look top then
As for the cooler get a twin pass one, plenty on ebay, and mount it behind the grill in front of rad, its what im doing as im fitting a plough as well

Ive looked at them twin pass one's and the dimensions etc, i cant figure out how it will all go in and fit until Ive got my X16 in and the Rad in place etc, as i might get one of them TX jobs, or just a GTE/GSi one, the thing im looking at is my inlet will be on the right (like a 20Let) and i cant figure out how i will work the piping out in the bay round the rad etc...
It's hard to visualise it without having the parts to try it all really.
Cheers Edd glad you like the the idea's, yeah im thinking with it all one color it will work too.

What about some Mk1 Golf GTi wheel arch extensions?
I did look at this a while back mate, the golf mk1 clipper/gti kit would fit it, but then it may look a bit odd, i think less lumps/joints will look better, but im going to stick with the wheels as theres a nice bit clearance from inside the wheel arch, just too much poke!

I have a twin pass i/c mate - i bought it for my loon, then never fitted it. (after modding the pipes to fit it!)
If youre going to spares day, I can bring it along?
Scott..
Put the plough on the hatch ;) Get some paint for the under the side strips - boom SR rep.
Wheels do look a fair amount wide...stretch, tyre shine, and more lowness and they should be ok.
Definitely needs some kind of extensions on the arches, the fronts just look "wrong" with the standard wings.
Hope you can get it looking right though as the wheels should suit the car spot on when everythings sitting right.
honestly Scott, i'm not so sure on those wheels..

Nope not plough'ing or SR repping the 1.2 i don't see the point in it unless i actually make a"rep" with full parts and ID etc.

Think I'm going to fold the arches out and flare roll them so they extend over the arch, if needs be I'll custom some metal extension etc..
and when fitted with 165 wide stretch tyres will all work out ace.. And the lowering thing is something i need to look into, not sure what to do to get it extra low..
honestly Scott, I'm not so sure on those wheels..
Mazz, as above mate, trust me i will make it all work..
tbh it might just be tyre size/profile...

Dervy fitted mk3 astra top mounts to the front, pics on his project thread, looks like it works, lowers front by 25/30mm by the looks of it
looking good mr parker :)
Scott they look the dogs!!! Fitment seems similar to when i had ronal turbo's on my old corsa c, seems like you got +ive camber, if you run a couple of degrees -ive camber and flare the arches a touch on the front i rekon you will be onto a true winner, this stopped the scraping on my corsa which were 15x7's et38. If not as mentioned before the mk1/mk2 golf arches would work, i know of the mk2/mk1 fiesta boys using them to gain clearance for wider wheels.
Oh that Corsa gives me the horn.
Right the wheels look awesome dude, i love it. What about, rolling the arches out? You'll gain abit of room there.. (like Austin, simps, olz did, so you don't have a lip underside) Yes it means painting the arches.. But will make fitment easier.

I decide to look at my ZX single wiper set up, as i want to use the Nova motor so i dont have to butcher the wiring etc, then i can re route it and smooth the hole off from the fire wall..
So i set about seeing if i could mount the motor on in a way it would work right, i had to find some sort of spacers to allow the correct clearance one it was bolted to the linkage frame, so i stole some mounts from a old fiesta wiper bract i had sitting about..

Use a brass wire brush rather than steel which should make it a little less aggressive.
Use a sand blaster, aggressive as you like wire wheel, thread gauge, axe... it's a steel thread, it'll be fine. If you're worried about a wire wheel you'd cry seeing someone clean an internal thread with a tap lol

All the arches are very very good, just needs the rear parts making and the same on the back end of the sills the opposite side the arch, but Ive bought the welder, i intend to do it my self, then get my mate who repaired the yellow mk1 rear 1/4 to paint it after we have unfolded and rolled/stretched the arch lips to cover the cup's!

Always where goggles/glasses! A paint chip is huge with under the top eyelid... Believe me.
Coilover threads come up well ;)
Corsa engine removal just as easy as nova, wip off the tiebars/bottom arms and just drop the lot out underneath

Great idea wrapping it all up in cling flim :)
Can you not get some anti rust stuff to get the deep pitted areas?

Lol cheers Si, i did see you did it, but then we use to do it with everything at work when i worked in exhibitions as everything has to travel and be used more then once, so Ive got loads of wrap/packing foam and cling etc..
Yeah i might use them products everyone seams to be using them..
And as for them dials/gages you sell do you do a air to fuel ratio one?
As i think i would like air to fuel/boost/oil temp.

All the other bits came up well Scott. Fair play.

I had my tank shot blasted but you need to make sure it is sealed well to stop the shot getting in and it needs emptying and venting for a long while as the shot can ignite the vapour
Wrapping anything just painted can be bad, as it doesnt fully cure over night (outsides might be dry, inside wont be, plus the vapours can be bad is stuck with the paint)
Id get the tank powder coated.
Enamel paint is what I would use on the tank

So after getting finished from work early (but still payed upto my finish time) i got in had a cup of tea an relaxed..
Then cracked on as the weathers ace!
So bit more to the hub/carriers etc..
Gloss Black on the the other that i etched last time, two coats so far.
http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/8673/dscf4465b.jpg
Then masked the other i had done so it left what i wanted to paint, and keep what i wanted in black, and applied hand painted coatings of hammerite smooth gold.
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/1314/dscf4466a.jpg
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/7495/dscf4471f.jpg
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/366/dscf4473d.jpg
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/3482/dscf4472h.jpg
Im going to try on a test bit if i can apply a few coats of spray on top of the brush on, so to finish them with no brush marks but brushing on will give thicker coatings for more durability.
The i started to think about my fuel tank again, Ive decide i will get some anti rust stuff, and im going to get as much crud off as i can, then etch prime it, then get a mate to coat it with stone ship, then im going to pain on top of that with a suitable paint type etc.
So i scrapped the sound deadning strips off (need to remove all the residue still) and i made a cover for the pump hole so it wont get stuff inside.

I'll give them a call in min, as there the one's selling the N/S on ebay, but not the O/S, but on there web site they stock the O/S but none of the N/S lol
So after a quick call, it looks as if ebay not been updated and the N/S is OUT off stock, and they will place an order for them, BUT they do have the O/S in stock now! lol
So she's took my details and is letting me know when both are in stock to order.

Gathering idea's as to hows the best way to go about the arches on this, not sure if to go a similar route to Austin and just try roll/flair the original wings o to get some mk1 golf repair wing/arches and see if i can get them to work, or just get the plastic arch extensions, as i love the look of this mk1 jetta.

Not feeling the spoiler myself.
Plastic arches would look cool, and blend them into the standard black trim that goes around the bottom of the front valance then add it on the back and sides to complete the look all round?
I'd would do as Austin did, roll/fold them open/flat so there is not lip/flat edge. You'll gain over an inch of arch so the wheels will tuck really nicely.

Just more parts to add to the collection :)
I dont get the raising rate fpr. Sure it needs the fuel all the time, not just under boost?
scott.parker
07-11-12, 05:55 PM
Well as I'm not going to go for stand alone management (least not straight away) that it works as normal, but will increase the pressure with boost so it should be delivering more fuel, as I don't think the engine will last long with a standard fpr
nova_stee
07-11-12, 06:13 PM
Scott were did you get the oil filter relocation kit
I dont get the raising rate fpr. Sure it needs the fuel all the time, not just under boost?
They do give fuel all the time. And then for every +1 psi of boost itll add +1 psi pressure of fuel.
Nova Stee, the 2.0 8v/16v Mocal oil filter kit will also fit a small block 8v.
Ah right, i knew they gave fuel. It was the rising bit i didn't get. Thank you.
