Just after a bit of info regarding proof of No Claims...

I had a policy that ended Nov 2011 and left me with 1 years NCB. I didn't renew as the vehicle was scrapped and my Nova was already insured on a separate policy so I havnt used the NCB...are they now lost or can I use them if I start another policy on a car I'm hoping to buy?

You can still use them. NCB are usually valid for 2 years of non-use.

New insurance company might require proof of the year earned though.

I've got the proof certicifate and will probably take the new policy out with the same company (Admiral)
