Head gasket

Was having a look at the 205 1.6 gti and noticed it was using water, can't see any leaks and it does have some sludge in the cap, but that could be due to it sitting for months.

I'll pressure test and see what's what.

What's your views on fixing;

Do I pop a new gasket, water pump and timing belt, maybe skim the head or just buy an engine from eBay and pop that it. Cars just going to be used for track

Fix it.
2nd hand Gti engines are a minefield,trust me! Its took me 3 engines to get good enough parts to build 1!!!!!

If your doing the work yourself will it be cheaper than buying and fitting engine?

Heads only need skimmed if you set a level on them and they are banana like(warped)

Test the coolant water with a co2 leak detector to see if the gasket is gone.......

water pump,timing belt you may aswell do when it's all apart :-)

Will only be 100 quid in parts, engines around 175 to 275 incl delivery. I guess you're right andy...use the engine I know works!

As said, unless the head is warped or has excessive pitting I'd just do the gasket

Have you had a sniffer test done on it yet mate to prove its the headgasket

Nope, don't have the gear for it. I was going to use my compression tester? Would that give 100 % accuracy

Liner seats can corrode and fail,leaving coolant to weep into the sump area.
