View Full Version : timing belt not sitting right
ok so i had the engine running today :), all running fine untill the alternator belt came off for some reason
i put it back on and it came off again this time getting stuck behind the lower timing belt pulley i ended up cutting the old alternator belt off as it was all twisted by now
before i fitted the new one i checked the timing, it was bang on when the engine was put in
i put piston 1 to tdc and the cam shaft is now sitting here

a good few teeth out, the engine still turns over by hand find and can still hear compression while turning it by hand
something isnt sitting right though to make the alternator belt come off, ive took a few pictures of how i have things set up

the way i have the bottom pulley set up is i put the big washer on first, then the woodruff key, then the pulley them the main bolt and thick washer
is that correct?

hmm according tho that there isnt a washer behind the bottom pulley, i dont think it would make a difference with it there or not as the pulley has a recess in it
also mine is different toothed from thier diagrams as well
can someone with epc check if theres a washer behind the lower crank pulley, my epc is playing up
its a 20seh from a mk2 cav not a mk3 there are some differences
my images wont load upo properly on epc but managed to have a quick look and it dosnt seem to have a washer behind the pulley
i think thats the problem

Im just trying to copy the data off of autodata for you
cheers mate, ive read through the haynes etc but all it says is re-fit the same was as removal but dosnt say anything about washers just to put back on what i took off

there shouldnt be a washer behind the pulley dude, pretty sure that;ll be your problem

ive turned it over a few times by hand but it still seems to move towards the engine when going round the cam pulley it over hangs by maybe 1-2mm :(
I would fire it up and leave it running to see where it settles, obviously turn it off if its going to mash it right up lol
well i fired it up and the belt moves in towards the engine when going round the cam pulley so i turned it off
the belts actually rubbing against the block now which is whats stopping it coming off the cam pulley
when looking at the water pump pulley it looks as if sticks out further than the cam and crank pulley, could it be that?
its doing my head in now

would guess something is out of line,
Looking at your water pump pulley, has the washer come off the back?? i.e nothing to stop it running towards the block;)

my current pump has 21 teeth, could i have the wrong pump? there seems to be 2 listed for the 20seh on that website
i wonder what the different could be ?

Was going to question the pump
Are you intending running the engine without the back plates/guards? only need to stone off the road to bounce in
trying to find a cover has been like hens teeth :(, thier all either broken or wont remove them from the engine

Which is hideously unlikely imho... The only time it would concern me is if the engine was off and someone dropped gravel down the cambelt end then you start the engine up lol

You've never seen gravel drop and bounce off a truck?
Probability may be low, but I wouldn't riskl it, just an observation

2. i think the water pump isn't seated right, this might be pulling it over.

the bottom pulley is now set up the way it says in the autodata pictures
ill slacken the water pump and reseat it and see what that does
i have no timing belt cover for it and can find someone selling one that will part with it
i think you need to remove the pump & see what its like underneath, cos it just doesn't look seated straight

well i removed the waterpump and moved the shield thing across as it had moved and it seems to have fixed it
theres an annoying rattle noice coming from the pump but i know what it is and easily fixed :)

I have heard of timing belts being thrown due to stones/debris getting into the belt/timing gears, but not experienced it myself.
I accept the risk is low, but though it worth mentioning:thumb:.
I hope the engine is now OK Mr Swedge;)
its seems fine so far, apart from the **** loads of smoke from the exhaust wrap lol
will get it all tidied up and the wiring tucked away and get it taxed at the end of the month and see what shes like
