May sound a silly question but can I run a T25 like this, its a journel bearing type if that helps.

Here is a photo if it helps. I am guessing the answers no as the top half may run dry when the engine isn't running..

Is that as in, rotated 90' so the compressor is above the turbine?

Yeah Jack, if it works it would make the hole thing a lot easier. But I doubt it will.

pressurised oil doesn't really bother much with gravity, and once its pumped thru, you get the siphon effect holding oil into the housing.
i can't see how it would fail simply cos its in that position.

Thanks mowgli, if it were yours would you position it like that?

tbh, i've never seen a turbo fitted in any other way than with a horizontal shaft, i'm wondering if there is another reason to do with shaft thrust, but then when you think of the applications a turbo has been fitted to, f1 cars, drag racers, aircraft etc, there must be an application with a vertical shaft..

I have seen bikes with them in all sort of positions, but the key thing is would it last?

There's some discussion on the subject here (http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56052)

hmm i saw that & thought... its the old computer says no so you can't sort of thing...

and all those people seem obsessed with is

'ooh if you don't have it flat & the drain hole at the bottom, it won't work'

what about lateral g forces, and bumps??

back in the bad old days of the early 80's, they were running f1 cars with hgv turbos at 700+hp for 300km.... maybe they were running some clever oil flow system

awaits the count's opinion

Chris S has his off to one side...
Chip has side sat on top of the rocker cover...

As long as the flow is there, i believe your ok.
