I got a 05 plate 2.0 diesel (think its a peugeot engine) focus estate at the weekend from the auction just before christmas any how bat light keeps coming on so did some basic checks and replaced the alt as i was only getting 11.25v. but i still got the same problem there was a choice of 2 alt so tried them both with no luck so found this.http://www.petercoopercarrepairs.co.uk/ford_focus_alternator_smart_charging.htm

When the 3 pin plug is disconnected it still reads 11.25v

When i changed the alt i noticed it was a new one anyway but i put it down to being faulty but now after 3 of them and still no change im scratching my head.

This was an ex ambulance car still got the lights and siren plumbed in anyone had the same fault

Cheers mark

I had the exact same problem this week at work on a ford transit connect the 2.0 diesel came in with battery light on and not charging, changed alt still same thought it was faulty so got another one still the same, after some digging around in the engine bay there was one of the wires had worn through the cover after fixing this the battery light went off and was charging perfectly.

So basically check the wires going to the altenator :thumb:

As above, had a few connects in it my work not charging properly, strip the covers off untill you can see the wires and 8/10 you will find your problem!

I am guessing the EML light is on too? People swear that you have to use gen alts only with the smart charge system, so may be worth trying a known working 2nd hand one?

Common fault is the loom, but it should still charge when the plug is disconnected....

no eml light and makes no difference when the plug is disconnected just took the headlights out to follow the wires and make room. You should see the mess its all been chopped and joined think it might be a job for an auto electric bloke maybe this is why it was at the auction ill keep looking tonight. does anyone know were the relay is for the alt.

thanks for the advice so far i appreciate it

right found the wire that someone had disconnected and tape up the end not a broken wire but it pointed me in the right area fixed bat light went out ran for all of 10 seconds then cut out ive had the fuel pipes of to replace the cam belt so guessing the fuel has drained back to the tank over night.

now it wont start i might have to have get my hammer out and smash the living shiv out of it lol

cheers again guys

If youve had the fuel lines off of course it wont start, its a diesel. The fuel filter bowl will be (by now!) empty of fuel completely.
