The red rocker cover.
Common you didn't need to be a brain scientist to work that one out!

Like the milkman.....we like to deliver!
from common ignorance as usual..as the red bit is the plug cover...it has also been black, and silver, but for some silly reason the old one with the red plastic plug cover is considered to be a legendary engine.
originally, it was built so gm could go f3 racing, and they needed 5000 factory built units.. fiat used to fit ferrari engines to certain cars to fiddle the same rule.. it was found to be pretty good in group a spec (230 hp approx) and won john cleland the btcc one year, even if it was multi class & gmds had to enter the other cars in the class...
and it became a legend...
i thought we was talking about fly traps lol

Subarus also have Redtop motors.
and honda vtec, skyline . etc lol
Subarus also have Redtop motors.
Stop sniffing da glue! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHbNuyubhz0) lol
Subarus also have Redtop motors.
and Nissan, Mitusbishi, Toyota, Honda etc etc. The thing I find amusing is that they are actually known as a 'red top' due to having a full red cam cover, and noone minds. Unlike the VX engine which just has a piss thin bit of plastic/metal over the spark plugs in that colour. lol
Guess it's accepted in other circles, as there isn't such a barry boy stigma attached to the engines. lol

Irony shirley! lol

The other thing is a lot of Jap manufacturers actually distinguish them by colour rather than code. I know the Toyota range of engines are actually called red/black/silvertop etc in some sort of official sense
Aye, I meant to say that. red, silver, black, blue top etc SR motors FTW.
What are the decent ones out of those and how do you distinguish them without the rockers? We've got a couple at work lol

lol maybe "valver" should be accepted to avoid confusion!

Depends if N/A or not, FWD or RWD. General rule is red and black top ftw.
You won't have a blue top, so don't worry abour that!
Roller rocker etc distinguishes high from low port blah blah. Curved intake manifold, or flat top 'block' style will denote power too.

The French got there first. lol

thread of the fuking year f lol
Really??
Aye. It's official name is a Clio 16v, so valver was an obvious nickname.
An Astra GTE was never known as a valver to me!
thread of the fuking year f lol
Yeah you're right. This place has really gone downhill. lol
i love these in standard form!
Yeah, me too. A mate had a couple when we were new to driving. Was fun fixing it every other week! lol Nippy little motor and nice in the twisties too.
These days we just put their engines into Volvo 340's and light up the right wheels! lol
the xe is known as valver round ere f lol

But then the GTE was available as an 8v and a 16v.....so it too was known as a valver. As some refer to it somtimes.

we've got 2 heads, both have the roller rockers, and one has a black rocker on it... sounds like it could be a decent pair then ;p

I never mixed in those circles. IME people that said valver when referring to an Astra were pricks. If they said Astra valver, then you would know what they meant.
Just saying valver though makes me instantly think of the Clio. IMO they hold that name.
The funniest thing in all of this is how many people still think a 16v 2.0 will make a rocket ship Nova. Quick, yeah but not worthy of even half of the average stuff on the road these days.
Shame, but that's life!
The kid on here who was in the huff with his Cav Sri and pulled the 130 bhp engine out to go in his Nova and proclaimed it would create 'one fast Nova' gave me particular lols.

i cant understand why people think there over rated, tbh i think there great, if they were that shyte then why are we still going on about them now, 24 years after they were first built?
i wouldnt say they are crap...but they are a good engine. bit like the pinto still being widely used by the spanner boys. just one of those engines that they got right.
i cant understand why people think there over rated, tbh i think there great, if they were that shyte then why are we still going on about them now, 24 years after they were first built?
Because thousands of the pieces of scrap were built, which means theres farking tonnes of spares readily avaliable. And there a doddle for even the most retarted home brew mechanic to fix.

People are still going on about them now because they are the cheapest, best solution to the dismal vauxhall nova range of engines, and after replacing whatever engine you originally had,you really think you are doing the timewarp again!

Unfortunately not, in terms of Toyota anyway. Again its like the VX redtop thing lol They're all G4 or G5 3SGE BEAMS engines as far as Mr T is concerned.
Its just an aftermarket thing to call them red/black/grey top.

When I built my first xe 14 years ago ( god I'm getting old) they were bloody quick compared to what else was about at the time but technology has moved on and hot hatches have returned and manufacturers have gone on a power war, so an xe is no longer that quick but then you can buy a let for the same as an xe cost 14 years ago now and the conversion parts are loads cheaper so a fast nova can be built on a reasonable budget still, tbf there not the quickest thing but there a gigle and make me smile so I'll stick with them rather than a euro box,

Ibtl ;)
I'll stick with me redblock (official term). Lol
i still don't understand the term 'valver' it sounds like a cockney naming parts of a womans anatomy....
in the same way as volvo sounds like a scotsman doing the same........
valver does actually sound more like someone who makes or mends valves, but in terms of an engine, actually bothering to say how many valves will be of help.....
this thread does remind me of the pub bullsh!t thread i did a few years back...

I don't understand peoples problem with the name 'redtop' seems to me that its used more by car lovers then vauxhall heads, and I don't expect them to remember all the engine codes lol
most people round here call them valvers, and iv heard the term baby valver referring to the 16xe

Back then a cheapish car to build that would keep up with cossies and the like. Always been known as valvers or redtops since before the "others" still a nippy car now. Hell My Daddy wagon is a 09 Vectra VXR estate with 280bhp V6 turbo that gets the same 1/4mile times I was getting 10 years ago in a valver/redtop novalol Proper crap car eh?
when i used to do the servicing with my old boss they used to all call them either 16v's or vauxhall 16v's
most of his cars were mk2 escorts and most of them had that engine
