The BMW was a 2.5l 170hp IIRC

Yesterday i managed to get the EPAS working :)

Bought an adjustable controller box from ebay
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9368f_zps0da96248.jpg

6mm² and fuse cable for the main power wiring
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9386f_zps438f5ac5.jpg

because i had no plug for the epas-ecu...
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9390f_zps62125004.jpg

...i improvised with two 9.5mm blade receptacles
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9389f_zps99d7a794.jpg

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9392f_zps236ba251.jpg

for the positive wire i gone trough the bulkhead...
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9395f_zpscd96a3de.jpg

...and mounted the cable to the starter motor
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9398f_zps1f7cb033.jpg

and to demonstrate how it works i made a video :)

- at the beginning: EPAS turned off
- then i adjust it to medium assistance
- at the end, full assistance

You have a great car there, I wish I had your engineering talent and to be honest dedication...

have you had it on rolling road? What are you getting out of it? Also I know you put a Quaife diff in but what about Quaife gearbox?

ExTrEmeOc
03-05-14, 07:11 AM
Thanks guys! :)

Never been to a rolling road so i have no idea how much bhp it produces... maybe i should do that lol
I'm not sure about changing the gearbox at the moment, first i want to have a decent power output from the engine before i start thinking about upgrading the gearbox.
Maybe someone got a decent second hand 16xe (around 180bhp would be nice)? ;)

Ready for race and test all the modifications

1. Training run

Because the bumper was very low and i didn't want ot to be damaged i drove very slow and cautious.
But unfortunately the changes on the suspension i made during winter made the car nearly undriveable :(
the car just bounced when i hit the throttle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF7OY_IGIB4

To be on the save side i removed the bumper after this run.

ExTrEmeOc
29-06-14, 09:27 AM
2. Training run

without bumper at least i could hit a pylon without damage... and that's what i did at 0:42 lol
the suspension turned out to be much worse than last years problems, but on the other hand the EPAS was a real suprise!
The EPAS makes a real difference even i just set it to minimum assistance

Hahaahahhaha nice photoshop lol

ok here's what happend the last few months:

After my suspension problems i started to search for a solution. Main thing i wanted to try is to maximize suspension travel.

Maximum suspension travel before (passenger side jacked up)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9812f_zpse067ac4f.jpg

intended suspension travel (driver side jacked up)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9813f_zps01519ea4.jpg

while checking the suspension i noticed some play in the steering. steering arms worn out..
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9815f_zps9370b81e.jpg

so i decided to replace both steering arms. :)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9832f_zps75e76417.jpg

To maximize suspension travel i ordered a new pair of tender springs which are 20mm longer than the ones that came with the coilover kit
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9825f_zpsf897dbfe.jpg

checked the lsd differential for possible problems and had the opportunity to make en oil change and replace seals.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9993f_zps9b3f61a0.jpg

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_9995f_zpsfecd3087.jpg

than ordered new springs for the rear to also modify suspension travel
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0005g_zpsf23712c3.jpg

ExTrEmeOc

front driver side
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0017f_zpsfaf23cf7.jpg

rear driver side
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0035g_zpsd98a6bf8.jpg

and sorted out :thumb:

front
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0029f_zps38590a1c.jpg

and rear
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0055g_zps6f2d6230.jpg

found a way to reduce weight by changing the springs on the front

original coilover spring set: 1'159g
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0105g_zps352bae86.jpg

new spring set, longer tender srping, short main spring: 1015g! saved 144g per side
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0107g_zpsa81fda87.jpg

looks like this now
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0124g_zps30933deb.jpg

Rear suspension:

new tender springs, lot of travel and just 16mm when compressed.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0127g_zps2c26551f.jpg

new rear spring setup

found a way to lower the car as much as possible and raise the roll center of the car by approx 30mm.

roll center (blue circle in the middle) before.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/rollzent-2_zpsd68c7170.jpg

to raise the roll center the wishbone has to be moved 20mm upwards
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/rollzent-3_zpse622515e.jpg

wishbone in original position
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0132h_zpsaa7ed108.jpg

drilled holes 20mm above the original ones
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0134h_zpsbe78e47f.jpg

wishbone mounted in new location
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0127h_zps95ef7fef.jpg

now the wishbone is pointing down, and the roll center is raised. this should minimize body roll.

Goes as well as it looks.

cool as ****.

you can see the difference in body roll in the two vids. what poundage springs are you using on the front and rear?

I have a lot of body roll on my nova which has been better since lowering the rear a bit and found that a front ARB helped a lot. im interested to try as you have. thanks for sharing. are you running a front ARB? Id advise you try it. I was surprised to find it an improvement.

Thanks a lot! :)

I'm using 120N/kg (685lbs/inch) on the front and rear. My problem with using a ARB is that my front lower suspension can't support the original ARB, if i wanted to use one i would need to make some custom ARB.
I don't use an ARB on the rear as well, but i'm quite happy with my suspension setup at the moment, adjusting the dampers to suit the springs can also make considerable difference as i found out, so i will stick to it for a while. :thumb:

thats pretty stiff then. im running 600lb rear and 375 front with front and rear gsi ARBs. I have the 8v so slightly lighter up front but not that much. I might have a play around with some stiffer fronts and see what it does. im getting a bit of tramping on the front when i pull out of a bend and the diff is locked so the stiffer springs might help this. Have you ever had this?

ExTrEmeOc
28-09-14, 09:02 AM
I had problems with tramping, look at the video "2nd times run" on page 30. I had to extend the suspension travel and soften the rebound to minimize this problems.
Do you run a Quaife Torsen LSD (i do)? I've got the suspicion that a plated differetial would probably get rid of the trampling, even when running an extremely hard suspension setup.

Ive tried all sorts of settings but cannot seem to get rid of it. im hoping if i rose joint the lower arms then it will help as its the only poly bush left on the front suspension.

i have a harry hockley plate diff. it only does it when the diff is locked and im turning pretty tight. I think what ever tyre is doing the slipping when turning its tramping instead of spinning smoothly. its pretty bad it feels like its going to destroy a driveshaft.

I was thinking it's been a while since this was updated but just noticed a year has gone by, anything new to add to this awesome machine?

ExTrEmeOc
13-05-16, 04:40 PM
anything new to add... mhh let me think.... quite a lot actually lol

sorry for not posting in a very long time. After having a bit of a downer the past few months i found new motivation and a new project.
Not much happend in the past year so i wont bother to write that down instead i'm looking forward to the things that will come.

Lets start with the Basics: after long and hard thinking about my little nova and what to do with it i decided to get rid off the front wheel drive.
When i was searching for an alternative drive train i checked a few options and fell in love with the idea of a mid engine layout. Searching for the
right engine was a bit tricky because i didn't want to just put the existing engine in the back. So an engine from Vauxhall/Opel was out of
the question what lead to consider other engines from different manufacturers. Happily i found an engine that will fit in the back of a nova :d

:wtf:

Here it is:
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/DSC_0005_zpsqc6a5tee.jpg

Yes, my new project involves an impreza EJ20 Turbo engine. It's an euro-spec EJ20G with 211hp and 260nm of torque which will replace
the existing 1.6l. I'm planning on running the engine without cat or any exhaust so probably there could be a little more power to be gained.

The rear suspesion setup will consist mostly of subaru parts while the front suspesion will remain as it is now. Furthermore, to complete the
rear setup i will add an upper wishbone to get a double wishbone suspension.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/opubaru-sus_zpsytonvzzv.jpg

There is of course a lot more to do than just the suspension, for example the ecu electronics which need to fit, exhaust pipes, gear shifter, clutch pedal, cooling, fuel... an so on.
I did a lot of brainstorming to find a solution for every task and i will reveal them as the project progresses. ;)

So happend so far you may ask...

I've bought a subaru impreza gt a few weeks ago, which had a defective fuel pump.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/DSC_0003_zpsrwc2iu94.jpg

removed the engine, front and rear suspension, and quite a lot of other stuff that will be needed in the near future

i've been busy the last to saturdays to bring you news what happend to my sanity... eehr i mean, what happend to my Nova :d

First i removed the battery and the fuel catchtank wich were mounted in the spare tire well
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0009s_zps6cbzrngy.jpg

removed the fuel tank underneath
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0012s_zpsaoqztoah.jpg

After that done i've started to cut away the excess metal which wont be needed in the future
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0019s_zpscl9ortna.jpg

And found a lot of rust
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0024s_zpswd8disva.jpg

Luckely this had to be removed anyway
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0040s_zpssnj9tikh.jpg

after carefully leveling the chassis i could begin to place the new steal tubes
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0042s_zpsv6uhaerq.jpg

made a temporary reinforement to retain correct measurments while adjusting the tubes
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0043s_zpshqgdbn5z.jpg

spot welded them in and made a connection to the factory chassis leg
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0051s_zpsglprylv8.jpg

Removed the the rear axle. :thumb:

ExTrEmeOc
30-05-16, 01:50 PM
It's called work ethics, i can give you the recipe :d

To be honest it's two days with approximately 12-13 hours of work. So maybe it would be possible to cram it all in one day.
But what is needed to be considered here is that i spent a lot of time on planning how to do it, which makes a huge difference
when conducting the task at hand.

Benn
31-05-16, 12:28 PM
Wow that looks great. Are you just replacing cause of rust? Or strength and such?

ExTrEmeOc
31-05-16, 05:10 PM
The main purpose of this is to get more space in the boot and get a new rust free base for the double wishbone suspension to build on. The original chassis legs never meant to be strong enough to cope with an engine and drivetrain, so i want the rear as rigid as possible.

To prevent you all of thinking i'm started to live a normal boring life... here are some updates lol

I've started to remove the rear panel to gain more space for the new gearbox and welded in some additional tubes to stabilize the rear.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/DSC_0014s_zpsi3fcxncj.jpg

perfect fit  the rest of the rusty parts will get removed in the future
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/DSC_0013s_zpsdz2lsgwr.jpg

after welding and a bit of paint i could remove the temporary reinforcement
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0070s_zpsfbkjofos.jpg

the metal for the rear footwell was a bit floppy
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0080s_zpsgybi71bk.jpg

so i decided to weld in a small square metal tube.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0081s_zps0b2jvmjt.jpg

Added some welding to the original chassis legs
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0083s_zps3rxswpop.jpg

and made some plates to further strenghen the new chassis legs
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0076s_zpskbkixznf.jpg

All welded together and temporary painted to prevent rust...

and completely blocking the turbo exhaust

Made a bit more progress this weekend

First thing i did was to remove the rear strut brace
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0226s_zpsmla9ltgc.jpg

lifted the gearbox to its final position, perfectly hidden by the bumper
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0236s_zps9f4doinj.jpg

and shifted the engine/gearbox further back using most of the available space.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0237s_zps9hisctjy.jpg

theres still a slight drive shaft offset which i'm going to ignore lol
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0238s_zpsnmmffpom.jpg

As the engine pitch mount was originally fixed to the bulkhead i had to make a mounting point myself
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0240s_zps9okoyiw1.jpg

weld it to a piece of metal tube
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0242s_zpsgygnn2e6.jpg

and create a whole new bespoke strut bar which allows a lot of room for additional parts like an exhaust manifold.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0253s_zpst9dmjvqy.jpg

the subaru gearbox crossmember was, apart from one small piece, pretty much useless to me
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0239s_zpsgm8btcpf.jpg

so i cut it up and created a whole new crossmember
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0247s_zpsd7hzg2oj.jpg

its about an inch lower than the bumper, ground clearance should be sufficient
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_0250s_zpsu85qkqus.jpg

Once again the Swiss don't hang about. Great stuff, this. Please keep the updates coming. Love this.

On another note: I spotted a rather special VW/EJ20 build at https://youtu.be/1hiYz3CxoQo where the engine is installed backwards (with the gearbox facing forwards). Somehow the wheels turn in the right direction - any idea why this is?

BRoadGhost
11-07-16, 09:14 AM
The way the that engine mount's designed & welded on; I would have pretty big concerns over it's durability over time (& bolted onto inner arches). Same goes for cutting & welding angles into tube ~ Some fairly big forces go through engine & gearbox mounts; tube that's been bent will be considerably stronger.

Love the concept of an MR nova!

Thank you very much, appreciate it.
No there will be no floor in the back, maybe i will add a diffuser once the conversion is done. I'm not sure at the moment...

So again, a lot has happend over the past weeks therefore i will present a brief overview of what has been done.

Soon after the first run of the engine i began to further construct the rear suspension and made some parts myself
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6555s_zpso1r56kh1.jpg

suprised by the fact that i could mount the shock absorber on its original mounting point i discarded my original plans to fabricate new suspension turrets
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6559s_zpsle73mcxb.jpg

modified turrets with slight angle to suit the new suspension
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6596s_zpseauqnzqi.jpg

after doing that, the first control arm for the upper wishbone could be constructed
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6631s_zps8ywe3iyp.jpg

As you can see here there are three pickup points provide adjustability for the rollcenter and dynamic camber angle
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6633s_zpseu6amqkn.jpg

Had to order new parts for the rear shockabsorbers to convert them to struts
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6683s_zpsh6kguua2.jpg

The exhaust needed its last part and as you can see i kept my promise to completely ignore the well being of everybodys ears :-)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6623s_zpsyiqktlnr.jpg

just 63.5mm wide but certainly not quiet
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6626s_zps8fi8b1p5.jpg

Finished parts: upper wishbone and lower trailing arms
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6688s_zpskw33bdfs.jpg

Some impressions of the complete double wishbone supsension

Two and a half month and i haven't updated, shame on me...
To assure you that i'm not sitting around and wasting time here's what happend in the time past.

After clearing the engine bay of the redunant engine the impreza cooler could be fitted.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6762s_zpshxdonxnq.jpg

Made a new brace to get the cooler mounted
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6771s_zpsceoqgn18.jpg

Slanted cooler for an extra race-ish look lol ...more like "it wouldn't fit otherwise"
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6775s_zpsx4zhojqb.jpg

To keep the engine even more cool i've added the oil cooler which i had left over from the old 16XE engine.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6791s_zpsmms32dpk.jpg

there wasn't enough room for the pipes so i found a radical way through the subframe.

The end piece sits to the left of the engine and will get an airduct to flow air to it.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6941s_zps8k9vhjud.jpg

The clutch, which in its original form is actuated by a steel wire going to the clutch lever, now needs to be hydraulically operated as the subau gearbox demands such an actuation therefore i searched for an easy solution to convert the cluch pedal to suit the new circumstances.

Rather than add something the steel wire could pull, i found a way to fit the master cylinder at the inside of the car so the cluch pedal can now push the rod without me fabricating any complicated mechanism in the engine bay.

I simply added a new mounting point for the master cylinder
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6827s_zpsylk7vsbs.jpg

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6829s_zps2g4dcsqh.jpg

which now fits within the milimeter between the power steering motor and the bulkhead
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6834s_zpsive8lyui.jpg

A new high stand for the shifter had to be fabricated because the shifter which i purchased was intended to fit a bmw e30 and clearly not a mid engined nova lol
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii34/ExTrEmeOc_CH/IMG_6802s_zpslqqodnip.jpg

http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_7014s_zpsv8l9wjt7.jpg

Here's a video to show how it works.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp5ZZYinRlQ

Another thing i've added was a new seperation between the passengers compartment and the new so called engine bay :)

For that i've built a simple frame
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6908s_zps09etmjy6.jpg

and bolted some aluminium sheet to it
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6911s_zpswpt84uop.jpg

In the future this will be accompanied by a piece of acrylic glass to allow visibility to the rear
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6916s_zpsbtfig77o.jpg

Thanks to the frame for the seperation i was also able to make the accelerator pedal work

The cable runs along the frame
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6944s_zpsw189ij2m.jpg

trough the aluminium sheeting
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6978s_zpsomdr1qpj.jpg

to the front where its connected to the original cable which, obviously, is connected to the loud pedal
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6948s_zpsgukldv2a.jpg

Even more cooling related stuff had to done in the form of tubing therefore it was necessary to fabricate two holder
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6840s_zpsahhegycl.jpg

they are now welded to the chassis and hold the tubes in place which run along where the exhaust used to be
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6861s_zpshuqofijw.jpg

ExTrEmeOc

Which made it possible to fit additinal tubing and connect the whole cooling system
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6995s_zps4cicx4ob.jpg

Also made a new lower brace with mounting points to hold the tubing in place.
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_7001s_zpss9ctra9c.jpg

complete cooling system at the back
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_7005s_zpsuilali7a.jpg

Some other smaller things that have been done but are worthy to note

i've cut apart some old drive shafts to make some axle stubs for the front suspension
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6927s_zpsbtqznlqo.jpg

http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6931s_zpsgcdbp1ac.jpg

To facilitate slowing down at high speeds i've started to make the new brake piping
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6871s_zpsyyd3blka.jpg

and aslo prepared the piping for the clutch
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_6872s_zpsk61vdykl.jpg

yeah that's about it for now. More will come as soon as i remember to update this thread lol

As i am also a victim of photobucket new business model there are a lot of missing pictures in here. However, i've been busy setting up a website for my car and transfer the whole thread i originaly wrote in a german forum. As it is a lot easier to translate the posts directly within the website i started to translate the whole website to make it suitable for those who aren't fluent in german ;)

I don't want to abandon this thread and i think i will update it from time to time with a summary of what happend so far. To get a full review of every detail that has been done i would suggest to visit the webpage. So here we go, an overview of what happend over the last few months.

the rear strutbrace has been extended with two tubes in order to further strenghten the rear part of the car.
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_7042s_zpsmjsjjwah.jpg

to complete this I've welded it to the chassis
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_7050s_zpsaq4q8sze.jpg

bought some push-pull cables to get the shifter to actually shift gears :)
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMAG0336s_zps9m5ltlsc.jpg

In order to fit the cables to either end of the car the shifter assembly...
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_7134s_zpsolq3pg29.jpg

...aswell as the gerbox had additional mounting points added.
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_7129s_zpsv7f2p2im.jpg

Video proof of it working.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0E7DJqFH10

Also converted the 5 stud rear wheel hubs to suit the opel setup.
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_7150s.jpg

drilled a 4x100 pattern and welded suitable threaded sleeves to the back of the hubs.
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_7164s.jpg

now there is just one type of wheel needed to suit the front and rear axle.

2 years, 2 months and nearly 2 week since i put the angle grinder to use and cut out the boot floor. Left over, a lot of memories which i would hate to miss altough some of them led me on a wrong path but ultimately showed me the way forward. The nova with its subaru mid engine can surely be considered as a unique build which has been unprecedented to this day. Just thinking of that lets grow a grin on my face, especially the thought that someone could be that "bonkers" to build something like that, altough the person in question is me. lol

Here the first of august is considered as a national holiday, unfortunately because of the heat, this year its forbidden to use fireworks to celebrate it. In order to subsitute for asscociated noise of that day i presented it in other form to my neighbors. I doubt there where any flames coming from the exhaust, so at least i conformed to the ban of any fires for barbeques :)

Therefore, here's a not very exciting video of the rollout of my frankenstein contraption, which proofs that the monster lives and moves under its own power. Muahahahahahaha

Really enjoyed reading your build, cant wait to see it stretching its legs.

One question - are you sure your air intake is going to work ok at high speeds? It follows the contours of your arch which makes me thing it might want to suck out more than flow in, could be wrong though

ExTrEmeOc
03-08-18, 03:20 PM
That's actually a good question and to be honest i'm not quite sure either. I will let the intake temperatures decide whether the cooling is sufficient or the intercooler needs to be fed additional air from somewhere else. But i already got a backup plan if it should be the case, i indentified a solution where an additional intake can be made. Let's see how things turn out :)

There was a bit of a knot in my stomach prior to the first drive on the track, dozens of questions in my head, have i forgotten something? Did i really recheck all the bolts? Do i have to expect catastophic understeer?

Luckely the first preparations on site distracted me somewhat and my doubts quickly vanished as i started to press the gaspedal more and more towards the floor and no parts flew across the track :d

To my suprise the handling was very comfortable and there was no understeer detectable despite the light front axle. But i must admit i was very cautious when driving around a bend or thight corner to prevent to experience something unforseen.

After just two runs the first areas for improvement made themself aparent which makes driving in the future less stressful. Things i defenetly have to adress are:

- Cooling in the engine bay, heatsoaking and rising engine temperature after stopping.
- Brakes, astra 16v brakes are not suitable for the power available :d
- Gearshift somewhat vague and unprecise
- Tankenlüftung, austreten von Kraftstoff in engen Kurven.
- Gas tank ventialtion, leaking petrol in corners

Engine mapping proved it self as quite challenging as it is difficult to simulate all driving conditions without being in everybodys way. Despite that i was able to find a lot of areas where the mapping could be improved and make it more refined. Luckely my roughly handmade mapping made prior to the trackday wasn't much off and the full throttle part proved it self as quite accurate which resulted easely into good acceleration.

Unfortunately the gearshift became more and more vague towards the end of the last drive which led me to leave the track. This proved it self as a good idea as one of the push-pull cables decided to disintegrate just as i left the track.
Luckely i was able to put it in gear manually using the manipulation on the gearbox which made it even possible to easly drive onto the trailer.

In total i'm very satisfied with the result, every important thing worked, sometimes even better than expected. All the hours which i spent for information gathering, engineering and put into reality have really paid off.
Despite heading home having a "defective" car on the trailer i was really happy and found new motivation to carry on...

Pictures are in short supply, although i will provide them as soon as some can be found on the web. ;)

Saturday 6 o'clock in the morning... departure towards france.

After not quiet 2 hours driving and some waiting in front of the entrance to the racetrack, I used the short break to shoot a photo of my temporary parking spot before the gates were opened.

In the middle of the street lol
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_9992gs.jpg

After the gates opened and a somewhat hectic unloading of the race car everything was prepared to start.
The joy did not last long because, before the first run, a noise measurement was carried out and my inconspicuous, small, improbable Corsa roared as loud as 102db into the microphone.
Although various solutions have been developed in my head to eliminate the difference of 2db in order not to exceed the required maximum of 100db, I was not denied to drive and I was able to ride shortly thereafter without further measurements taken.
The morning went quiet unspectacular apart from the fact that the heat thermoband caused a lot of smoke and I shortly worried and thought something caught fire. In addition to that, the first strong braking maneuver revealed that the brake pressure adjustment of the rear axle was way too low.
When braking into a slow right turn the front locked up, however, there was little total braking force. The reason for this was that I chose to adjust the brake pressure regulator to the absolute minimum to avoid possible brake lock up at the rear. As it turned out in the course of the day, the rear axle is capable of delivering more braking power than anticipated, at the end of the day the regulators were already set to about 70% of the maximum pressure.
In the future i will try to slowly raise the pressure to find the limit.

http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_9994gs.jpg

In the afternoon I was able to get to know the car and its driving characteristics a bit better, the confidence rose and the fun increased steadily. Some changes i did to the ignition mapping made a noticeable difference, especially starting from about 6000rpm. Depending on the engine speed, the injection values now dropped by approx. 8-10%, although I think the exhaust still receives a good portion of the remaining injection quantity and uses it for a spit of flame. :d

The later the afternoon the bolder the driver, this is true for many and definitely hit me too. Flooring it resulted in acceptable acceleration but also made the rear axle to step out. The curiosity to find out if it is possible to go full throttle as early as possibly rose steadily, as the front axle reacted immediately and without delay to any input coming from the steering wheel the enticement to overdo it was very strong. The knowledge of sitting in an oversized go-kart and drive it that way resulted in a sloppy driving style but also offered a huge ammount of fun.
To tame the rear axle a limited slip differential will certainly be necessary... but thats something to adress next winter.

One of the runs I had to interrupt early because I had problems with the shifter, again. Fortunately, only one screw came loose which could be fixed in not time.

Fixing the shifter on the spot.
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/IMG_0010gs.jpg

As well as a hose clamp of the crankcase ventilation, which I forgot to fix, still needed some attention. However, this had little impact except for some leaked oil vapor.

This was a very successful and educational day which showed where there is still a room for improvement. The next tasks will include details and adjustments. Oil cooler, wiring, additional ventilation to the engine and what ever comes to my mind.... lol

And for those who have read the text here is a video of the Trackday and of course for all others who have skipped the text as well. ;)

Unlike other Trackdays and Slalom events, this time i participated in a "performance demonstration" called GP-Furttal, fortunately only a drive 25 minutes from my home.
This went on over the weekend, mainly intended for vintage cars on saturday and on Sunday where the performance of race-ready vehicles could be presented to the spectators.

The more than 180 participating vehicles were divided into 7 categories, which were allowed to drive 4 times a day for about 15 minutes at a fixed time. No race, no overtaking, just fun driving and entertainment for the audience which was allowed to be very close to the action.

Arrival for me took place on Saturday noon to get a whiff of octane rich air and not missing out on the vintage car atmosphere. Also, I was allowed to attend a one-hour old-timer drive in a lovingly restored Astra mk2 GSi as a passenger.
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/170349.jpg

Sunday already started at 8 o'clock for the first drivers on the track. Field No. 7, which was intended exclusively for racing cars, started shortly before 10 o'clock. At this time the air temperature was already a quiet big issue, as it was inthe majority of Europe. This made the drive in racing overalls, gloves and helmet, close to the engine bay not to the most pleasant tour that you can imagine :)

Unfortunately, the first run was already overshadowed by the first crashes, and I almost became a victim of it. The lovingly restored Astra, which drove behind me, suddenly lost brake fluid and could not brake in time for the next corner. Interestingly, I had already realized in the rearview mirror that the speed with which he closed on me was to high to slow down in time. I moved to the left and he pulled the handbrake while veering to the right, which unfortunately for him ended in the guardrail.
Since I had 4 cameras recording the run, it quickly became apparent that we were probably only a few centimeters apart before a collision would have occurred.

Fortunately, I was able to finish the first run unharmed, but my luck was also put to. At this point again a big thanks to all that helped for the work and the brake fluid!
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/bremsen-entluft.jpg

The next run went smooth except for an occasional small powerslide. The rear brakes got a new setting, which they go through without overbraking: full pressure. This will most likely force me to get bigger brakes on the rear axle as the full potential is not used yet. :d

Unfortunately, I broke down in the last third of the last drive. The car began to stutter more and more and showed no performance. After the engine finally cut out and didn't want to run any more it became apparent there was no sign of life anymore and the run was over for me.
The reason for this became, still sitting in the drivers seat, obvious to me and was confirmed to me after a quick look into the fuel tank ... empty!

Since the whole event was over after that run, i've loaded the car on to the trailer where it broke down, of course with some petrol in the tank. ;)
http://www.extreme-garage.ch/Blogpics/181649.jpg

Over all a really eventful event in which I would like to participate again.

And at last the Video... enjoy!

Quick summary of what has been done over last couple of weeks and what im currently working on.

During the last trackday i noticed a slight loss in power, no acceleration beyond 5500rpm and top speed about 180kph :wtf:
So i tore the engine apart to find the cause(s)

Various boost leaks at different spots.
Intercooler to throttle body...

Blow off valve gasket

Broken and bent hoses

Replaced all these and a couple of other stuff in order to get all the boost to the cylinders.

While having everything disassembled i removed the recirculation of the factory blow off valve and modified it slightly to give me the distinctive turbo blow off sound while shifting gears :d

To get better cooling in the engine bay i've relieved to bumper of some unnecessary plastic

That doesn't mean that i will abandon this thread. It should be more an easy way to keep the ones informed who are interested in it.

Following on Instagram! Diffuser is cool, although will less air flowing over the engine cause any heat issues?

It's even worse than just a diffuser, it's got a fully flat floor now. I'm a bit worried myself as well of the engine overheating, that's why i cut the vents into the rear bumper to help flow some air through the enginebay. I designed the mounting points for the diffuser as low as possible just in case it will lead to overheating and the diffuser needs to be quickly removed, no jacking up required.

Wont it push the air up towards the engine and push out through the vents recently cut in the bumper?

Thus more air flow over engine cooling it? Ie velocity of the air is more as it becomes slightly compressed.

or am I talking rubbishlol

or am I talking rubbishlolDiffusers accelerate air from underneath the car generating downforce. With a fully flat floor the air won't be getting on top of it at all.

Hi - I would be very interested in talking to you about the rear arches/track width of your Nova/Corsa please.

Hope to hear from you soon.
