View Full Version : Why has no one done a x18xe1 Nova yet?
Why has this conversion not been done yet, is it something to do with wiring?
I mean on standard management and loom not aftermarket ecu.
I'm sure his is on MBE ECU and throttle bodied? So not standard
Lee303 has one, not standard either though
The silly wiring and fly by wire throttle puts most people off I think. But I'm sure Gunny found a way to convert the standard throttle body to cable quite easilly on his Nova VXR
x18xe1 uses cable throttle body, you're thinking of the z18xe
You're quite right, I've been mistaken all this time lol only thing that put me off doing the conversion lol

my mates got one only real problem when fitting was no fuel return outlet.
Any pics?
No return can be solved with one of them ebay adjustable fuel pressure regulators, it says that on the corsa conversion guide.

can be done on standard wiring/ecu - dave franczak is the most famous (one of the first) to do so in corsa b - no idea why its not caught on in the nova camps.
More the merrier.
didnt fow16v do this in his white nova?

I was going to do it but brought the wrong engine got pissed off and brought a xe lol
You bought it, not brought it.
it was a 1.6 to start with

yes its a veccy lump didnt mean the pics were off a 1.6 f lol
Someone mentioned small block 1.8 16v and then you posted pics of that car lol

he just used the fuel pressure valve as the return

I thought the Corsa VXR lump was a 1600 turbo??

yeah there must be a x18xe1 or other 1.6 petrol/turbo GM engines using throttle cable t.b that fits the corsa 1.6 vxr engine - that engine itself uses the x18xe1/z18xe cylinfder head.
Dave Franczak did a transplant guide on corsasport i believe, telling you which wires needed to go where.. Haven't seen it in a while so not 100% but could/should still be there..

I was thinking about doing this conversion and decided not to bother, but after reading this I'm tempted again. I presume being small block that an f13 gearbox will fit? and do the 1.6 8v flywheels fit straight on like with the 1.4 and 1.6 xe's?
Yes the F13 will bolt straight on.
And a light 8V flywheel will fit straight on too but you need to use the clutch for it, not a x18xe1 clutch.
iirc it needs a c16xe exhaust manifold as the cat is built in on the 1.8. unless you just run the cat & go for a reduced emissions certificate to get reduced road tax..
z18xe has cat in the manifold, x18xe1 doesn't
This is wiring for a Corsa but since the Nova doesn't have an immobiliser what do you do?
Corsa Loom -> X18XE1 loom
Thick Red -> 2x Thin Blacks (+12v)
Thick Black -> Thick Black (IGN 12v)
Green -> Green (Revs)
Blue -> Blue (Temp)
Blue Red -> Brown / White (Immo)
Brown / Blue -> Brown / Blue (Immo)
Brown / Yellow -> Brown / Yellow (Diag)
And is there a way of bypassing the x18xe1 immobiliser so you don't have to use transponder and chip?
You will have to wire the immobiliser up else it wont run. TBH the wiring just sounds identical to any other 10-15yr old vaux.
Just wire the pickup ring up to the ecu, same as on 1400/1600 16v conversions

Chip it^

As said above, by adam, ben etc.
Wiring is virtually identical to x14/x16
Can be 'by-passed'/chipped for a hundred pounds or so, or do the old tape-the-key-in-ignition-thing.
It is best to take the x18xe1 for a nova/corsa conversion (instead of z18xe) as its most like the earlier x14/x16 engines; (no manicat as mentioned)
-if you using std/o.e management/induction,throttle setup.
I only went with the z18xe because i was binning all that anyway.
Just had a look at the x14/x16 wiring diagram but I'm really really bad with wiring/electronics so no idea what most of it means lol
i sure i got told the x18xe1 has a longer stroke than to get it up the cc and would mean that a 1600 revs better and the x18xe1 has 115 bhp so not a lot on than a 1600 and is less than a 1600 with a tuning inlet manifold and the inlet are not swopable either
Oh and to answer the original question the reason i dont think its done much is because it aint worth it over a 1600 16v imo lol
Similar sort of power, but the engines are more expensifve to buy in the first place, and you can tune the 1.6 16v for less money (initially if you go down the inlet box route)
If going on tb's or whatever though then 1.8 is the way to go.

Nah dont be silly.. Its a ready-made cheap upgrade! from the start off. Its pretty much a £free overbore.. kinda. As said youde have to spend over £100 extra of powerboxes/remap to get the 1.6 to oust it..
I reckon its a free mod. Slightly bigger capacity.
While its a small block its always worth it - no real difference in fitting, just this silly myth it cant be done, or at least as easily. Also its neither here nor there with prices both engines are around £200 ish to buy - both are plentyful around. 1.8's will tend to be a bit younger.
It produces its slightly higher power/torque, a bit earlier in revs - much more driveable.
engine x16xe x18xe1
cc 1598 1796
power kw/rpm 78/6000 85/5400
torque nm/rpm 148/4000 170/3400
Its a shame the z18xe wasnt cable throttle though, or that it would be an easy job to convert to cable throttle- then any 1.6 arguements could be put to sleep as it steps on (ok the crappy ones) big block's toes..
engine z18xe x20xev
cc 1796 1998
power kw/rpm 92/5600 100/5600
torque nm/rpm 170/3800 188/3400
but swapping the nova accelerator pedal for the z18xe fly by wire pedal would be a doddle
I think its pretty hard to find a x16xe/c16xe tbh but there are many x18xe1s available and the prices start from 150+ so not expensive either
Interesting thread. the x18xe1 also came in vectra B's and early astra g's, so lots of suitable cheap donors. I'm tempted to do this conversion myself, but the x18xe1 only puts out 115bhp standard and will be more difficult to tune than the x16xe.
Z18xe's are great engines,my Astra Sri flew for its size.Would be ace in a Nova

I wonder if it's possible to use a C16xe wiring loom and then you wouldn't need to worry about any immobiliser nonscense, just fit a airbox and AFM and jobs a gooden "maybe"?

I had one in a coupe which is even heavier and it was nippy! Even my friends were impressed by it.

Look at the inlets on them, the horses are trapped in that swirly piece of emissions dodging junk (Normally full of exhausty EGR goodness) bin that for a semi thought out chop job, bit of pipe and a inletty shaped box, down to your local friendly tig welder and your horses shall never be lost in a maze again.
Still looking into how this works on standard management, would help if the seller actually sent me all of it in the first place lol

is that designed to run on standard management Mark?
I will be trying it on standard stuff but for best results I will end up with standalone management.

Ahh i see, custom made jobbie. Very nice! Am i right in thinking, as standard the inlet manifold is in 2 halves? with a short runner attatched straight to the head?

standard inlet on these is in two halves; though it looks like only the flange has been cut off and used in Marks build.
Ah, I see...
They are toyota 4age 20v ae111 individual throttle bodies on a rowland m024 inlet manifold with a pulsar gtir sr20det inlet plenum with custom adaptor plate.
Ah, I see...
It's a parts bin inlet.
:d
:d
I must be getting old....I don't get it..
Lots and lots of random bits from various cars, i.e parts bin. In the same way Vauxhall raid their parts bin for new cars, which run nova GSi sideskirt clips still, etc lol

I'll be removing the inlet and running trumpets anyway.

what exhaust manifold will that be running??
