Well after playing around with the vag scene for a while now iv decided it's time for me to bring my saloon out of the garage and do something with it..

Il be mainly using it as a toy to be honest as my child is due in February.

What I'm wanting to know is what engine could I drop straight back in (sort of) without changing all the lines and tank etc..

The car was a 1.2 merit.. I'm just after abit more poke as there's no engine in atm ;) but not wanting to go redtop or baby xe as my turbo 1.6 plan failed horrendously!

If you go for the x18xe1 engine make sure its that and not a x18xe as they run that canbus Crap as I learnt to my cost a couple years back ,thats why I gave up on the idea and went for a c20xe lol

I assume you mean the Z18XE and they don't "run" canbus. The Z18XE came in on the Astra G in 2001 and "Canbus" was first used on the Vectra C in 2003 (Half Canbus) then 2006 for Full Canbus.
