The girlfriend has a 1.7 puma and it nearly hit the red a few days ago.

I've taken the water cap off and let it get upto temp from cold with the heaters on full, no heat from the heaters and the radiator is cold, as is this expansion tank.

Cab anyone explain the cooling system? Looking down at the engine from the front, the right handside hose from the block into the rad is warm but thats it. Should this warm water not go into the rad and cool? I'm not sure where the thermostat is located in this system. When should that open, I thought it was stuck closed but if it was then hot water shouldn't be in the top hose?

the thermostat is usualy where the pipe comes from the radiator into the head, either the thermostat is stuck closed, water pumps not working or you have an air blockage in the system

take the thermostat out and put it in some boiling water, if it dosnt move its ****ed

you can run it without a thermostat to see if it fixes the problem before buying a new one
