cheers guys, i'll try cleaning it then see how it goes
I had starter problems and once called out the AA (when I was young and even more stupid), he said what is this? pointing to a broken wire. Saved me the £200 quoted froma garage to repair it, handy when you are a student.
Check all wiring including the earth is clean and strong, then if still no luck, renew the brushes but, measure this against the cost of a new starter, you should get a reduction giving yours as an exchange unit.

When I ever had a sticky starter or it done nothing I used to remove it and pour half a cap of engine oil into and turn the starter to coat the inside then it would fix it.

see its usually the solenoid thats the problem takes a couple of minutes to take the starter off then to pull the solenoid apart, clean out possible wet and dry if your fussy and then copper grease the ******* and works a beauty, then stick a load of oil or wd40 in the starter and hand spin it. clean it off assemble and see how it goes!
