My mates Merc CLS V6 320 CDi has developed a massive expensive sounding rattle and we have a theory as to what is at fault.

He says he parked the car up on Sunday night, all was well. Went to use it this evening and when started, it immediately began making this noise http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/?action=view&current=MOV001.mp4 (excuse the crap/short vid).

With the bonnet up, it is apparent the noise is coming from the top of the 'V' right at the back where the turbo is. I attempted to listen to it using a breaker bar as a stethoscope and it nearly deafened me! The surrounding areas are just as noisy too, so it was hard to isolate.
Add to this, the fact that he didn't want to run the engine for long (understandable), and we are basically back with the initial thoughts.

Thrust bearing come to bits, impellors touching the housing? Dunno if it has play in the shaft, as the car is still in one piece.

The noise doesn't seem to change with a rise in engine revs. It hasn't been driven since either, so can't comment on how that feels.

What do we think?

best thing to do is get the pipes off the turbo and get your finger in to see if theres any play in the shafts

I would say that it is FAR beyond a ****ed turbo making that noise!!

Get the inlet hose off, shove yer fingers in there and see how bad the shaft play is...though if that is the turbo i'd love to know how he's driven it enough to smash it to bits that badly!

Plus, turbo failiure and making that noise there would be blue fog behind the car and mayo on the tailpipe. Unless its suffered some kind of extreme failiure and the engines inhaled a chunk of compressor wheel, i cant see how it'd be turbo. Keep in mind that the turbo is pretty near the exhaust/inlet ports, and as such i'd hazard a guess that somethings ****ed big time with the valvetrain and theres a piston/valve hitting something it probbbably shouldnt.

Cheers lads. Aye, it does sound like it could be inside the heads too. I know what you're saying about the turbo. To justify that noise then it would have been very obvious beforehand that something was at fault, not to mention the engine would have munched something! It's just so strange.

The car was spot on before this, gets driven with respect too. I probably won't get a chance to check the shaft for play, as he is gonna have it collected by a specialist garage tomorrow I think.

Thing is, being a merc there's probbably all sorts of stupid stuff on that engine and its a better idea to send it to the specialist!

Silly question... But if it was turbo, then surely said rattle would increase once revs are increased?? If it doesn't then to the best of my knowledge, it wouldn't be the turbo...

the turbos probably the easiest to check so like i said id get the hoses off and get your finger in there, ooh er lol

It's been taken away to have a new starter fiited according to the owner.

I thought that it could be the solenoid at fault, not disengaging and allowing the starter to run on when initially told, but when I heard it I changed my mind. There was no 'wirring' like you would expect to hear.
