View Full Version : 78 Kadett C Saloon - Beige, low and Turbo
Normally looking at pics of "oh i found rot, oh i chopped it out, oh i put some filler on it, oh ive primered it ready for paint.... blah blah" bores the hell out of me, but i could sit and look at pics of your work all day long, youre a proper craftsman, keep it coming :d

Hi All,
Ive managed a few hours on the Kadett this weekend so here goes
After previously chopping all the rot from the wing mount the next stage was to begin shaping the repair panel to fit
Said repair panel
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Kadett%20Saloon/9BAB863D-43D4-4AC3-A741-19DE4CD9321A-829-00000060DE416DD1_zpsfa51add3.jpg
Chopping commenced

Bit by bit leaving me a closer fitting more manageable shape

Then more trimming

Happy with the rough shape i chopped the panel in half to make final fitment easier

Once I was satisfied with the i welded the first section in

The welds now need cleaning off

fortunately the inside seam doesn't need as much work

The next mission is obviously to fit the other half of the wing mount. However for ease of access i think i need to address the issue with the headlight surround first.

This will require some further head scratching

Thanks for looking
James
Can you fab up the headlight bezzal? Or buy a panel? Then you can replace the rotten metal with new before fitting the wing bit.
Think i need to pop down and see this workshop..,
i bet there are some VW golf/polo repair panels available with similar looking headlamp holes...
Looks the same as Chevette light mounting point mate
Count Vaux Alot

There are headlight mounting sections available as pattern parts and they don't look difficult to make either it's the process of rust removal from between the front panel and wing (we're the headlight surround joins the two together) that the pain as it will be hard to get out.
those small cheap shot blasters that look like a modified spray gun are pretty good at that sort of thing...

Evening good people!
Progress from today....
I started by grinding back the welds on the wing mount
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3175_zpsbd2d5d83.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3176_zps7c32ccb1.jpg
Then flatted them back with the DA sander
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3177_zps1c746a44.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3178_zps498e34a6.jpg
finally giving the bare metal some acid etch primer
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3179_zps0a30bd44.jpg
next on the agenda now that part of the wing mount was in place was to weld in the scuttle repair section i had made previously
So I cleaned off the edges to be welded with the air file
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3180_zps4c2cc68a.jpg
and primed up the back of the repair section as well as drilling some spot weld holes
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3181_zps37da48e5.jpg
welded it in place
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3185_zps1a231232.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3184_zpsb6f93ebd.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3183_zps29549bb3.jpg
It follows the line of the scuttle ok
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3186_zpsc0f7dbb5.jpg
then ground and sanded the welds again
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3201_zps438d2385.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3199_zps5569f31e.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3200_zps37e72276.jpg
And primed the area
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3203_zpsadb01f3f.jpg
Count Vaux Alot
29-09-12, 11:14 PM
It needs some finishing but I'm happy to move to the next stage at this point
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3204_zps828ee891.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3205_zps83ca8941.jpg
While the paint was drying on the scuttle i was curious to find out what condition the N/S wing mount and surrounding area was in.
This previous repair didn't fill me with hope
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3189_zps89688eb3.jpg
Nor did the filler in this area again
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3190_zpse36fc1d7.jpg
However I'm please to say id doesn't appear to be as bad as the O/S
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3191_zps82e94716.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3192_zpsbc09bf66.jpg
Although it isn't great I'm happy enough
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3193_zps109a1e4b.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3194_zpsc2a370e5.jpg
Especially as the wing mount isn't as bad as the O/S
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3195_zpsddee0cfa.jpg
And the shape to the headlight surround is still there (just)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3196_zps86c084f3.jpg
The A pillar/door jam area is bad here again
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3197_zps12c4e75d.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3198_zpse6efdd4d.jpg
while i was in the mood for digging about i attacked the O/S rear arch
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3187_zps9149ac14.jpg
Can i just say if you are thinking about 'repairing' something in this way please just don't bother

I decided to get more involved - grinder out
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3208_zps187544bd.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3207_zpsec193108.jpg
cleaned it off with the DA
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3209_zpsf42e4acc.jpg
crispy
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3210_zps9f8418f6.jpg
so i cut it out
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3211_zpsf8c5a2b8.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3212_zpscd347fd4.jpg
and chopped some more from the sill to see how bad the inners were
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3214_zpsc5a3ccfc.jpg
leaving this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3215_zpsdd60cfd6.jpg
Then i cleaned off the inner arch lip
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3217_zps08f15c67.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3218_zpsc56949ba.jpg
and put on some rust killer
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3219_zps898b0de5.jpg
Great work, scuttle end bit looks great.

Thanks chaps. Undoing other people's mess is all part of the fun it just makes it a little bit more of a pain. Most repairs would turn out better if people just took some more time and care instead of rushing and looking for the short cut.

Small update :)
I collected some front wings last week for a reasonable price
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3331_zps805ce624.png
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3334_zps0112035b.png
Then Friday night i actually got some time on the car not before I'd tucked in to the obligatory coffee and biscuits though
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3364_zps07adc883.jpg
not as cold as i was expecting which was nice
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3362_zpsdaf0cf65.jpg
Anyway my efforts started here cutting away some more of the O/S sill
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3365_zps01a4f143.jpg
To gain access to the strengthening support inside the outer sill and the inner sill which was looking crispy
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3366_zps32cf9607.jpg
a slice with the grinder
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3367_zpsa0c2547e.jpg
Then drill the spot welds out. It must have been spot weld day at the kadett factory as there were a few all in one area.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3371_zps5315c4f8.jpg
For those that don't know what a spot weld drill looks like this is my favored weapon
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3370_zps6787828e.jpg
With more of the outer sill removed i could see exactly what needed cutting out and replacing
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3372_zpsbbf16d64.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3373_zpsa14a2a70.jpg
I cleaned some of the grotty areas off with the power file to see how deep the rust went then marked up the area to be cut out.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3374_zps75b26c57.jpg
I took some measurements off of the strengthening support between inner and outer sill before removing it to gain access to the inner sill
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3375_zps161b48ae.jpg
Count Vaux Alot
04-11-12, 07:08 PM
began to clean off the inner sill
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3376_zps90a74eb2.jpg
before measuring and cutting out the rot from the inner sill
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3378_zpsd85266ee.jpg
more sanding of rust
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3379_zpsa963b186.jpg
once the area around the cut away section of inner sill was rust free i could make up the repair section
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3380_zps82f30490.jpg
it fits as so
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3381_zps807e939b.jpg
Happy with the fit i brushed on some rust killer behind the repair section then tacked it in place
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3385_zps2b9ffe96.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3386_zpsc084c057.jpg
And welded it home
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3388_zpsbaff8f75.jpg
once it had cooled i cleaned off the welds
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3389_zpsae54048e.jpg
and brushed on some more rust killer
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3391_zps77854123.jpg
Previously i had noticed another classic (sh!t) repair in the rear o/s wheel arch
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3209_zpsf42e4acc.jpg
so while I was tidying up i took a closer look
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3384_zpsbf09268d.jpg
Hhhmm i wonder what lies in wait for me once I've ground all the crap off that ::)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3383_zpsabcd99c2.jpg
This is how i left the old girl
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3394_zpsbb6c352d.jpg
I've now ordered an O/S sill, and an A pillar as well as a pair of headlight surround repair panels so i should have what i need to finish the O/S now ;D
Hopefully i should get a reasonable chunk of time on the car next weekend fingers crossed.

Evening!
I've had a busy weekend hidden away in the workshop so here goes
Starting with another piece of rusty twisted metal
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3441_zps2f6d8b1c.jpg
that used to live here
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3442_zpsfac7af55.jpg
so i zinc primed the new inner sill in preparation for the new metal in front of it
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3443_zps6a87b90c.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3444_zpsaabe3729.jpg
new sheet of .9
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3445_zpsdc93ae98.jpg
The repair section roughly cut out
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3446_zps7165395c.jpg

provisional test fit
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3448_zps39d95a14.jpg
then i began to add some detail
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3449_zps3b97f7ca.jpg
another quick test
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3452_zps11a010f2.jpg
And the finished product
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3454_zps56c613d3.jpg
Happy enough with the fit I tacked it in place
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3455_zpsc86899de.jpg
then fully welded
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3462_zps849be8e6.jpg
gave it a quick clean up
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3465_zps23d1afbc.jpg
and zinced that too

My thought then turned to the rest of the sill and what exactly i was going to do with it. So out with the DA and on with the sanding.
Multiply coats of paint later and i decided i would just replace the whole thing as it would be easier than multiple small repairs
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3466_zpsb59e7768.jpg
quite crispy in places

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3468_zpsd49870e1.jpg
To begin spot welds uncovered by sanding them off
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3469_zps9bbf3b9e.jpg
spots drilled
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3471_zps36ec8a9b.jpg
Then to my weapon of choice - freshly sharpened of course
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3470_zpsd95eeb09.jpg
after some grinding and bashing i was left with this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3472_zps78e6d052.jpg
I was happy i had removed the whole lot once I'd done it as the rust had started to come through in places
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3473_zpsbe12a568.jpg
more cutting and de spotting to remove the very end of the sill from the strengthening support
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3474_zps69a59087.jpg
then some cleaning up of the surface rust
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3476_zpsa272613e.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3477_zps8b6fad1a.jpg

detail added
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3488_zpscd15e381.jpg
Once I had got the fit close on the front end
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3489_zpsacd49456.jpg
I moved on to the back, cleaning the surrounding off as i went
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3490_zpsdd76426e.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3491_zpsb955eb6d.jpg
before i could fit the sill i needed to sort out this awkward area
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3492_zpsfd7e09c6.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3493_zpsbd2e2767.jpg
as the lower part of the back of the sill needs to be attached to something other than rust!
So i zinced the inner sill
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3494_zps91a5e192.jpg
and began the repair of the corner

more zinc
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3505_zps7baa2ef8.jpg
While that was drying i painted the a pillar
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3506_zpsd3c8bcf3.jpg
along with the rest of the inner sill
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3507_zps443443bf.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3485_zpsf1bacb26.jpg
With paint drying all over the place i thought i would take a look at the 'repair' in the O/S inner arch that i had mentioned previously
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3508_zps830a0d0c.jpg
Poor picture but this was the hole below that repair between the chassis leg and inner arch
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3509_zps638a29e0.jpg
from the inside
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3510_zpsaaf436e8.jpg
In order to repair it i needed the rear seat support out of the way as its covering part of the rust hole in the corner (it needs to be removed to fit the 4 link anyway)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3511_zpsf1c4a57b.jpg
I made myself a cave to protect the glass from grinding sparks etc
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3514_zps177a15b2.jpg
and got grinding
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3516_zps32968d5c.jpg
to reveal this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3518_zps8755d402.jpg
Back outside of the car i could now remove the under seal to get a better look at the rust hole.
heated and scraped first
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3513_zpseee13a90.jpg
then wire wheeled

Out with the grinder
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3519_zps4b4ebb9a.jpg
to carefully remove this piece
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3520_zps227739c5.jpg
as so
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3522_zpsf4fc9745.jpg
Then i cut a little more away from the inner arch to make the repair job a little easier- from the grind line above the spring location back.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3523_zpscc763ea1.jpg
Back inside the car i could now see there were three skins involved here.
1. the outer arch
2. the top half of the chassis leg
3. the bottom half of the chassis leg and the rest of the body
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3524_zpsf1b6ad97.jpg
As you can see in the pic above the chassis leg has been patched from above but its continued to rot out from under neath
So carefully i began to dissect it further
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3528_zps1fa9143c.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3529_zps47ab822d.jpg
leaving this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3530_zps7d2f2337.jpg
and this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3531_zps78037905.jpg

Lets start the repair with number 3 the lower chassis leg, what remains of it looks like this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3536_zpsc6e6d9e7.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3537_zps5bffcc97.jpg
so i roughed out the new material
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3538_zpsf9fc09d7.jpg
and tried it for fit
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3539_zpsa03eed88.jpg
Happy with my measurements i added some shape

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3542_zpsff25a17a.jpg
cleaned off the lower chassis leg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3540_zpse8ea186c.jpg
Made a few final adjustments and tacked the new metal in
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3546_zps93491778.jpg
satisfied i welded it home
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3547_zpsca484963.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3549_zps352ccd75.jpg
I then placed the old section of chassis leg back on top to test it all fitted. Thankfully it did

Very nice repairs. Reminds me of mine but better :) I really enjoyed that stage though and I would rather build than drive any day.. keep up the good work!

Evening All!
After a busy weekend i managed a couple of hours on the old Opel this afternoon.
I was feeling a little rough and could be ars£d crouching in the wheel well so decided to opt for a change of scenery.
I decided to set back on with the front end.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3570_zpsc41800d1.jpg
off with the front bumper
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3571_zpsce88445a.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3572_zps32cf0f0d.jpg
I roughly cut the section of the headlight surround that was to be replaced away
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3573_zpsd93fb4da.jpg
and started to tidy the area up a little
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3574_zps0a306c85.jpg
After some grinding back of the rust i decided some more metal needed removing to make a tidy job of it as this seem was pretty crispy.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3575_zpsc93c75b8.jpg
So i cut some more away
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3576_zpsc0986e1d.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3577_zpsee3fbe2a.jpg
Then i needed to bend up some new metal to replace the old as so
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3579_zps1ebadc49.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3580_zps735b33a3.jpg
After some trimming this strip will be used to repair all the old metal i have just removed.
After i quick trim i gave the first repair section a test fit
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3581_zps0fe9f267.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3583_zps4806e19b.jpg
Another quick trim then tacked in place

Happy with that it was on to the next section - test fit first
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3590_zps125d44a1.jpg
then trim to shape
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3591_zps0f55a3ab.jpg
with spot weld holes added
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3592_zps516f472c.jpg
and again tacked in place
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3593_zps60166e5b.jpg
With both repair sections in place the next job was to try the head light surround repair section in place
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3594_zps163be8ee.jpg
Dude to the amount of metal i removed due to rust i was left with this gap to fill.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3595_zps83cc4738.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3596_zps01084477.jpg
I added a small extension (again the new metal was taken from the original right angle bend i made)
first tacked
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3597_zpse1a278e4.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3598_zps5b7adf86.jpg
then welded and cleaned off
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3603_zps18054502.jpg
after a test fit of the head light surround I could now fully weld in the other repair sections

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3600_zpsd8bc19dd.jpg
welds ground back

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3604_zpsbd8f8ef6.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3609_zps6d058155.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3612_zps8dec3ce3.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_3611_zps4089ed55.jpg

Any body had any experience with either on of these 4 link kits? If so is the 'heavy duty' version worth the extra dolla?

Hi all - I'm thinking of a change of plan engine wise, anyone any thoughts on fors and against when comparing the nissan SR20DET against the GM C20LET?
I know the LET well however i know little about the nissan engine, It seems very popular?
Thanks James
theres a lad local to me whos currently putting a 20det motor in a chevette he seems properly keen on them but i dont know much about them really lol.

Pretty easy to tune mate. Stock turbo is fairly reliable up to 280ish. Internals are fairly strong in stock form. Plenty of cheap parts around for them. Have a look at Horsham Developments for tuning options. Jez knowns his stuff and a lot of people run his stage chips. He done the custom map on my motor this year too. Plenty of breakers around now too as bodies get old. Its why I plan on using one in mine along with all geometry.

Think I'd go with the c20let out of the 2 as you have knowledge of it and know what they can do, learning curves are usually expensive also bell housings and gearboxes are readily available

James do you not fancy the Saab conversion idea, some lads doing one into a chavett hatch its on here.

Thought about the saab but it has as many dis ads as ads really, we will see.
If your moving away from a Vauxhall engine why not put a proper engine in like a v8
BMW straight 6 on triple webers :d
Won't make it quite 90:10 weight distribution like a V8, and still make nice noises.
Some v8's are lighter than you think. Especially when compared to a turbo'd 4 pot
why bother with something else when you've got most of the bits for the 1600?

A V8's a nice idea and they are surprisingly light - the rover V8's all aluminium and probably weighs less than a let lol
rover v8's are crap in std form, they are massive & cost an effing fortune to get up to 250hp... pretty much everyone elses v8 engines start at 250hp
bmw v8 is the modders engine of choice... burgo also had/has a lexus v8 & they reckoned it would just about fit into a nova engine bay, so a kadett would be a doddle.
Actually it fits easily mowgli. The Lexus chassis legs are actually slightly closer than the nova ones. You can pick up a complete car for about £400 as well. But if not Lexus then bmw as they copied Lexus but pushed for me power

I'm with Burgo on this one. The Lexus 1UZ-FE quad cam V8 is the smoothest running engine money can buy. Burgo, you still got that 1UZ-FE engine sitting in your drive? You might want to have a word with Sir Count then. I quite fancy the idea of a 32-valve Kadett. :thumb: (admittedly I'm biased as I have once driven an LS400 and I was totally and utterly amazed)
Here is a chap from NZ building a Mazda minitruck with a Lexus V8. Great fun to watch, this (http://www.youtube.com/user/pimppalacecustoms?feature=watch). :)

Ah I see now it doesn't show as a link on my phone.
A V8's a nice idea, one I've toyed with plenty in the past. As Mowgli said the rovers are expensive to extract power from but I've been pointed towards the Lexus v8 on more than one occasion. More thinking needed. What outputs the Lexus v8?
I've just bought a BMW 5.0 V12 if you want me to run a tape measure over it for ya lol

250bhp and 250 lb ft. However lob on aftermarket management and say hello to 9.5k or lob on a turbo for 700bhp without having to open the engine up

Hi All!
Anyone else feel like they were busy doing nothing during the Christmas holiday? What with family and eating and shopping etc etc? I did however, I also found a couple of hours for the Kadett. Thankfully!
So here goes - If you can remember (or care to review the last couple of pages) I had begun to replace the O/S front wing mount. I decided to continue with this as i only had a couple of hours and it was one of the least less involved job i had on the go.
To begin i cleaned off the area around the seam to be welded
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_4084_zpsf8a846b4.jpg
Then fully welded the seam
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_4085_zpsb035d61a.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_4086_zpse76d9e5a.jpg
I was left with a small area that needed infilling
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_4087_zps05d3f58e.jpg
So i gave the area a clean up and made up a square to fill the hole
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_4088_zps2b8590c0.jpg
All welded and ready to be ground off
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_4089_zps8fac0d4e.jpg
While that was cooling off a bit I decided to continue with the slam panel to wing mount repair
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_4090_zps5e045f08.jpg
Small repair section made up
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_4091_zps8905af5a.jpg
Shaped up along with spot weld holes drilled and seams cleaned off
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_4092_zps75db8577.jpg
The welded up
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/kadett%20saloon2/IMG_4093_zps6770ce90.jpg
short and sweat thats all for now
