For the money, you cant beat the new Alpine MRP-M350 mono amp - MAX 700W, 350W RMS at 2ohms, 200W RMS at 4ohms - RRP ?150 only!!
Get a mono amp for a sub if you can - it tends to have more bass adjustments, as it is designed for a sub.

SPLX 2x12" subs ?46. SPLX 800watt amp ?110. Wiring kit ?20 Box ?40.

And fuck mine will taht be loud, and bassy.

So can you power more than 1 sub off a mono amp, or would you need to get an amp per sub?
I am thinking about getting 2x10" Alpine Type R subs - would I be able to power them both from the same mono amp?

yes you can run more than one sub ov the same amp but only if the amp can handle it!!! and it also depends on what ohms the subs and amps are rated at

If you want to run 2xtype-R's with one mono amp, you would need to get SWR-1021D's. They are dual 2 ohm voice coil subs. Wire the voice coil in series, giving you a 4 ohm sub. Wire the two subs in parallel, then you will get 2ohms at the amp. Type-R's are power hungry, so you would need a powerful amp that is 2 ohm stable. For example, The Alpine MRD-M500. Alpine produce a nice amp/sub guide which you can get from authorised dealers.

Good Luck

Cheers Yoshi.... I will get down to an alpine dealer and pick up an amp/sub guide.

I will probably find the answer to my next question in that guide, but.....
I am going to be putting some 6 1/2" mid bass speakers in the front doors. I have currently got some 4" pioneer speakers under the dash -
would it be a good idea to get some compenents and disconnect the 4" speaker
OR
Use the 4" speaker as a tweeter/high-mids and just put the 6 1/2" in the door
OR
use the 4" speaker, and a tweeter and a 6 1/2"?
The 6 1/2" speakers are SPR-174A at
(http://www.hendoncarstereo.co.uk/trolleyed/11/index.htm) and also the component set.
What sort of amp would I need to power them?

Cheers

lol paulandrewrobinson.
watts in terms of ICE means little. RMS is a much better judge of power. I agree with Yoshi go with the mono amp if you can afford it.

well to get it properly set up you could make a 3 way setup for the componments which would require a variable crossover. However not knowing the quality of your 4 inc speakers, I'd imagine your new 6.5 inch will be higher quality and therefore them small speakers could ruin the sound abit. This is all depeding on money, but you could get a 3 way set up which includes 6 1/2s in the doors 4inch which you could put in the dash or whereever they are now and also tweaters. They come setup with crossovers for a good balanced sound and do sound a lot better than the standard 6 1/2inch and tweaters. However they cost!.
Basically disconnect or sell your 4 inch speakers and get 2way or 3 way componment speakers to replace them.

Ok sorry for all teh posts should read the whole question first.
Basically alpine are not as known for good speakers as they are for their brilliant head units so look at other makes. Another thing is you would be better getting componments not coaxils. The high frequency sounds the tweaters play are one directional. Therefore they sound better if they are pointing towards you not just anywhere which the coaxils do. Make sure you check out the for sale forums at www.talkaudio.co.uk as they normally have some good deals on there.
To match amps up one of the main things that people should be aware is that Watt ratings could be made up and theres no decent standard. Thats why SPLX 200watt amps actually say they are 800watt. You should match up RMS of the speakers to the RMS of an AMP.
If you got a 2 channel amp providing 75 RMS Watts per channel then you should get 75 RMS Watt speakers (the more expensive makes usually can go higher than the RMS they provide on the box so you can give em abit more power).

I would ditch the 4" speaker, and go for components up front. I have Alpine SPR 176A components, and they are fantastic. the bass you get from the speaker is incredible!

To make it 3-way, you would need additional crossovers etc that match the speakers etc, and it wouldnt be worth the hassle.

well you just need a variable crossover. But its still not worth it and as the comps are not made for the 3 way setup, it will not be too good.

Cheers guys...
I think that I'll chuck out the 4" pioneer ones and put in the components. I think that the SPR-176A will be wicked.

Should I put the tweeter in the dash, or mount it into the door?
I am going to be building custom door cards so it wouldn't be a problem to put it in the door. Just wondered what the best position would be?
Perhaps at the top of the door card, near to the wing mirror?

well idealy the right tweater should be pointing to the person on the left, and the left should be pointing to the person on the right. You should move your tweaters to different positions in the car front to get the 'best sound'. Also I think its better that were kept abit lower down than the top of the dash for security reasons...
