Hoping somebody can give me abit of advice. I recently tried painting alloy, with aerosol cans. I used normal primer, and then gloss black. It seems to react everytime, almost blotchy? The metal seems to shine through everytime.
I prepped the metal the best i could so im certain its nothing left on there. My question really is, would etch primer help me?? Or anybody got any other ideas that may help me?
I know i could get them powdercoated, and that may be an option soon, but im just curious why im getting this reaction and if i can prevent it.
Many thanks:thumb:
it sounds like you are getting contamination. what are you painting & just how have you cleaned & prepped the item??
Silly question but, are you painting with warmth and making sure the wheel is warm? The paint will react and not stick otherwise.

Sorry i didnt really give much detail. There are a pair of Motorbike wheels, Sanded like usual, wiped down with a dry cloth, and then i always give them a few minutes with the hairdryer, spray them, and a few minutes after with the hairdryer. Dont know if you have seen motocross wheels, but they are a bare alloy.
Thanks for the replys

If you are painting on to bare alloy, there lies the problem. Will need priming. Etched primer etc.
But, why are you painting mx rims? They will scratch very easily. Just a thought.
when i paint alloys i
clean them
sand with rougher paper to get rid of any blisters deep scracthes etc
higher grit paper to smooth it all off
clean them with washing up liquid
panel wipe them
good few coats of primer
wet sand them with 800 grit
wash them
panel wipe
spray your coulour in a couple light coats then 1 heavy coat allowing to half dry between coats
lacquer
usualy they are fine after that but if not i wetsand them with 1000 grit then polish up

Aluminium naturally has a protective coating that makes it difficult for anything to adhere to. You may find if they were bare alloy then they were anodized.
You will need an aluminium or etch primer to start. Halfrauds sell a U-Pol etch primer which should work.
Also once you have primerd, dont forget to flat that back then wet wipe and dry wipe before adding the black paint to help it stick. :)

also gives it a much better finish, and if your feeling lucky you can wetsand the lacquer with 100grit and polish up

100 grit!, you will take it back to metal again! I use 1500 wet & dry then cutting compound
Im hoping he's missed a "0" off there lol
