i don't really use my 4 door saloon these days but i fancy turning it into a single seater, stripped out with a cage, but what sort of effect will this have on insurance will it go up or down as id only use it for the odd 1/4 mile and track day but it will still be a legal road car ?

Adding a cage puts insurance up

A cage is one of the single worst things you can do to a car insurance wise...have a play with some of the insurance comparison websites and see!
If you're only going to use it very occasionally, look at limited mileage policies. That should drop the price down.

It isn't at all.. but it could be on comparison sites as they (generally speaking) shy away from modified car insurance.
You are looking at about a 15% increase with my company. I cannot comment for other insurers.
Please don't make it a single seater until I've invited myself down to the west mids for a passenger seat ride in it, i love this four door
My insurance on the Nova or the MR2 didn't increase at all with the rollcages. Both cars were already heavily modified though.

That is because both are generally set up for standard UK car insurance, whilst they can insure modified cars, this is not their speciality.
When sorting insurance for my Sport the cage was the main problem, i could only find one company that would do it

I say strip it out, cut out the rear bulk to the boot area save some weight, cage it, but put two light weight bucket seats in it mate, mine only weigh 5kg each!
