pyromaniac_yeti
11-11-11, 12:19 PM
Not too sure about the locked centre diff - couldnt you find something that gave a 60/40 torque split or something? shunt more power to the back to reduce the understeer

Besides that, its a pretty awesome bit of fabrication!

mowgli
11-11-11, 12:24 PM
the way the f20 4x4 works is that it sends power to the rear end when it is needed, so locking it will product a 50/50 split, which without resorting to spending huge monies, is pretty much as good as it gets... considering the weight of a nova 4x4 will still be around 60/40 it should still be a load of fun to drive. and maybe playing with tyre widths & spring rates might be a cheaper way to address any understeer.

Connor
11-11-11, 12:33 PM
+1^ what mowgli said, tyres and suspension changes will be an easier way to tackle understeer, driving style has alot to do with it aswell. Very interesting project btw, hope all goes well, plus definitely think its a good idea for the tb's or carbs, imagine the noise on a 4x4 lauch at full chat, will sound epic :thumb:

well i found today fitting the charger to the engine was the easy bit hahaha

putting it in the engine bay was somthing else

couldnt be botherd with lugging the full engine in and out everytime needed to cut or weld somthing so made a moch up engine just to be able to bolt stuff to
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/5042/enginemochup.jpg (http://img263.imageshack.us/i/enginemochup.jpg/)

had to cut out the chassis leg to get to get the charger pully in

http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/5817/chassisleg.jpg (http://img830.imageshack.us/i/chassisleg.jpg/)

then found the front cross member is in the way of the inlet and outlet on the charger

http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/7576/chargerinlet.jpg (http://img528.imageshack.us/i/chargerinlet.jpg/)

then found the tiebars wont mount up properly so going to have to remake all that now

http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/9531/tiebars.jpg (http://img600.imageshack.us/i/tiebars.jpg/)

anyone removed this before (front cross member) how did you replace it and what with??

sorry about poor pics its on my phone and in the dark end of the workshop

autoworksnovasport
20-11-11, 11:36 AM
cut out the front crossmember yesterday
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/2142/crossmember1.jpg (http://img39.imageshack.us/i/crossmember1.jpg/)

had to lower it by this much

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/2003/crossmember.jpg (http://img88.imageshack.us/i/crossmember.jpg/)

then welded it all back in and braced it up

autoworksnovasport
24-11-11, 08:55 PM
gave up waiting for the shotblaster so got on with some cutting and welding today

i am having the wide kit from ste on here so set about widening the front end
cut the strut tops out and plated them up ready to move the shocks out

http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/8461/struttops.jpg (http://img846.imageshack.us/i/struttops.jpg/)

welded up the cut out for the supercharger pulley

http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/9731/pulleycutout.jpg (http://img818.imageshack.us/i/pulleycutout.jpg/)

and got some new bottom arms next job is to work out how to fit them didnt fancy using longer standard bottom arms theser have bigger stronger balljoints also so will be better allround

http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/3607/newbottomarms.jpg (http://img802.imageshack.us/i/newbottomarms.jpg/)

collected the kit from ste on sunday got it back and put front together to check width turns out its 71"s wide thats 1" off 6ft wide:d
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/7127/frntc.jpg (http://img217.imageshack.us/i/frntc.jpg/)

and after getting this and seeing stes build and few other "properly" built track cars on other forums ect decided to pretty much start over on mine:roll::roll:
so started by cutting the rear arches inner and outer OUT ready to be tubbed to get some wide wheels in :d

great build and keep on trucking, ive lost my way through the thread a bit is it still going to be 4x4 if it is you are going to have one hell of a car ive done the same thing to a corsa with an all steel xe in it, sidney meeke kevlar body ditched the ecu for the transfer box which is all reworked inside with hardened gears martin schanker built it in sweaden, no problem to 500nm and he altered the torque split as the boys in the thread mentioned has handbrake release i think its the best handling car on twisty stuff ive ever driven.
great read thanks for the posts.

autoworksnovasport
02-12-11, 09:58 PM
yeah still 4x4 just redoing alot of the floor and rear arches and suspension mounts

billewizz
02-12-11, 10:27 PM
a good mod on mine was to chop the bushes off the end of the trailing arms and let in some blocks, screwed to accept rose joints you can sort the rear geo then toe and camber kill some off that understeer

autoworksnovasport
02-12-11, 10:31 PM
yeah you can buy camber kits for the calibra rear end so was going to buy 2 sets to put in there so can adjust the track also

http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/7896/plastictube.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/585/plastictube.jpg/)

http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/6656/newcage1.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/688/newcage1.jpg/)

built in a cross brace
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/1733/crossbrace.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/16/crossbrace.jpg/)

added harness bars
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/2576/seatbeltmounts.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/18/seatbeltmounts.jpg/)
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/6504/cageinside.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/23/cageinside.jpg/)

added a dash bar
http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/7312/frontbrace.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/192/frontbrace.jpg/)

and thats 10 meters gone with only a foot or so waste :)

still got doorbars and a few other bits to ad yet

BRoadGhost
04-04-12, 10:57 PM
Yeah that'll work; will you add a plate on top of the drums for the cage to help spread the load or just weld onto it?

If it were mine I might even be tempted to tie the rear diff into the cage too.

When I had mine sprayed they told me I'ud "put too many bars in". I'm not sure they realise how performance has moved on.

autoworksnovasport
04-04-12, 11:02 PM
got to make rear suspension mounts yet

yeah as said ran out of tubing still got a few bits to put in yet

you can never have to many tubes :)

burgo
04-04-12, 11:04 PM
the lower one coming forward to the b piller, i would be tempted to angle it down lower so its closer to the bar that goes across the car imo

autoworksnovasport
04-04-12, 11:07 PM
going to be putting another bar diagnaly from that bar downwards towards the crossbar you mentioned

autoworksnovasport
11-04-12, 11:29 PM
made an inlet tonight for the bike carbs to go on (keeping my options open on which way to go with fueling)

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/144/inle.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/40/inle.jpg/)
http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/7238/inlet2.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/829/inlet2.jpg/)

gave it a lick of paint
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6997/inlet.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/17/inlet.jpg/)
http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/6046/inlet1.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/853/inlet1.jpg/)

and then made a alternator bracket
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/3658/altbracketnr.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/221/altbracketnr.jpg/)

autoworksnovasport
13-04-12, 08:42 PM
got a load more bits thismorning
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/5152/trackrods.jpg (http://img41.imageshack.us/i/trackrods.jpg/)
wide track rods 330mm rather than standard 295mm

and the rosejoints were made into these
http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/9476/adjustiebars.jpg (http://img845.imageshack.us/i/adjustiebars.jpg/)

so thats the complete front end adjustable now :)

Awsome build mate looking forward to seeing the finished result. Done a good job of the front floor / tunnel aswell mate looks tidy. I'm just looking into building a simler floor in my drag nova. Wheels look cool aswell ;) same as mine but a tad wider n mine are 13s. All I did was got slated on here and more or less told I was stupid for fitting 10j wheels. Are you still running standard hub carriers or comp ones? . Nice job

autoworksnovasport
13-04-12, 10:41 PM
thanks very much

standard hub carriers at the moment do you mean the wellers ??

total_vauxhall
13-04-12, 10:49 PM
Yea mate I have found a problem with the wellers like , I know 16v calipers don't fit in 13 inch rims so already knew I was going to have to change them but actualy they did fit sort of the caliper went into the rin fine but the inside of the spokes were fouling on the caliper would have ment spacing the wheel off about 20mm so I have gone back to 1400 calipers/ discs not realy a problem on a car that's going in a straight line. I know your wheels are 15" but the shape of spoke is exact the same and flat like mine so I suspect you will have the same problem. Just a bit of advice that's all mate.

autoworksnovasport
13-04-12, 10:56 PM
not sure if there being used yet as rubber is a bit of a knightmare to get hold of cheap enough

going to go 15x8j at rear and 15x7j at the front i think just because of tyre availability in those sizes

total_vauxhall
13-04-12, 11:13 PM
I know lol with me only needing 2 tyres at daft sizes they wernt to bad and I managed to get hold of the michelin slicks I have on for not to bad of a price but when I was looking on the net the same ones for a set of 4 were like 900 quid. Prices are mental lol

autoworksnovasport
14-04-12, 06:31 PM
put engine back in today to check tie bars clear the sump and gearbox as ive mounted them further into the front cross member than "standard" and they do :)

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/7286/tiebar1.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/707/tiebar1.jpg/)

also wanted to fit all the mounting boxes for the gearstick (direct to box linkage)

http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/7641/gearboxlink.jpg (http://img528.imageshack.us/i/gearboxlink.jpg/)

and it all sits nice in the arches now its all widened (still 10mm spacers to go in yet)
