Got myself a little nova TD.

This ones getting done propperly, and made to be the car i've spent a few years thinking i should have made the last one rather than destroying it completely...

Spec sits as such:

Mk2, in white.
3dr
256mm brakes, grooved discs and EBC redstuff pads
Huge **** off great ashley exhaust system from the flexi back
Very tasty leather interior
SR steelies
Mushroom filter
-80mm rear springs, uprated rear shocks and FK coilovers on the front.

Wants the arch on the drivers side sorting out, but panels were included in the sale :d
Also wants the f*cking suspension sorting out, as its currently too low, bump steers, understeers, oversteers and a few varietys of steering that i diddent even know existed all over the place. Trackings ****ed up too. And i think i broke my back on the drain covers coming into clacket lane's petrol station...all i wanted was a sandwich

Gonna hit rally design tomorrow see if they can sell me some stiffer springs for the FK's and raise them up so its at approx a -50/60mm drop, and sort out swapping my -80 rear springs for some -60's i've been offered from a forum member...after that its save the pennies for next week (got some pretty wheels lined up for it) and fix the stupid little bits that want fixing! Maybe fit the twin piston dump valve i picked up on ebay for peanuts too if i can find the relevant amount of wire & a solenoid.

Pictures speak a thousand words, so here we go:

On a side note, from what i can work out its pretty ****ing quick, and the turbo spooling noise is full on awesome. might have a play with the fuelling and turn up the boost controller that came with it as soon as the suspensions set up well enough to chuck it about a bit safely :tard:

Looks a nice wee car! Look forward to seeing progress

please paint the yellow bits white!:p

Mark did seem quite keen on keeping the yellow...however im not too sure myself.

I think the spoiler definately needs to go white, same with the strip where the boot lock used to be - however im not certain what i'll do with the mirror caps. possibly satin black...however im not sure if this would clash with the bumpers being grey?

Picked up theese today - 2 1/4 ID 225LB 9" springs...same poundage and length as what comes on GAZ coilovers as standard for a nova according to rally design. 99% sure they'll fit on the FK's, ill try em out tomorrow and see whats what. Got a nova session up at Teddythoms place - his has a fair assortment of silly bits wanting doing to it too.

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/312920_10150924241975054_816330053_21710704_120740 9300_n.jpg

Still swear that it was the most bad luck either of us could have had in a car sale possible! Twisted my ankle to **** when he picked me up at the station, then he lost the keys to the nova, then after alls said and done we left a bloody tyre underneath the car and dragged it up the driveway...one to remember for sure. Still, after taking a spin out today on some smoother roads and having a poke about i'm more than happy with her, even if i keep getting told by my parents & other half that im an idiot.

Oh, and i've got a twin piston dump valve on its way that was purchased for a reasonable price. Figure with some of the excess boost controller hose and an EGR solenoid i can get it all working fairly easily...call it chavvy or whatever, but i like the noise!

Yellow does look horrible, reminds me of Halfords Filler Primer.. I am glad its gone to a good home too. There are only meant to be 17 of the these left on the road now so make it nice, Have fun. + Rep

Glad you got home alright fella, I did warn you about the FK's lol Now your's to do what you want with so you can get rid of the yellow or paint it pink with green dots on if you want.

Oh, and don't hold back on the yellow bits people :p Halfords filler primer happens to be an awesome colour btw.

Pink with green dots?

Now that haddnt occured to me...it'd certainly be eyecatching!

Still cant find any damned -60mm rear springs!!

Because i'm a mug and starting to get irritated at the lack of daylight with which to do useful things to my car, i took this

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/383820_10150924919265054_816330053_21717541_448460 946_n.jpg

Then did a bit of this...

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/310299_10150924919245054_816330053_21717540_121388 5839_n.jpg

And proceeded to empty most of the tin of questionably mixed touch up spray supplied by Mark onto it!

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/393135_10150924919275054_816330053_21717542_903072 854_n.jpg

One less thing for tomorrow...and the dodgy grill was starting to properly wind me up! Tis drying now, so hopefully get the tape off soon...

Expect plenty of pictures on this thread of absolutely pointless things. I prefer to go into a detailed step by step photo of most things i do on my cars, cause that way if anyone has questions/wants a guide written up, then the informations there. Royal PITA when you cant find a piccie showing some silly little thing you realy needed to know about!!

pyromaniac_yeti
02-11-11, 12:51 AM
And the finished article...bit of a **** up with the masking on a tiny bit of grill slat...other than that, lovely! After rubbing a bit of olive oil on the slats to bring em back up to black i ended up with this:

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/386160_10150924951050054_816330053_21717762_188137 4934_n.jpg

Just hope the paint matches up in the daylight eh? Lol

I like the yellow door mirrors, but the rest is too much for me.

Hope you didnt get overspray in the house lmao

pyromaniac_yeti
02-11-11, 03:13 AM
Painted a little bit of my parents fake laminate...that said i've done this before. I find spraying indoors at night to be the way forward, and to clean up spills with brake fluid...Managed to do a complete respray on a Honda C90 in there without anyone being any the wiser :)

Yellow mirrors are now white, Yellow spoiler is also now white on the top...i shall continue spraying till i run out of paint which i expect to be soon. Get another can tomorrow to 2nd coat the spoiler if it needs it, and to do the silly little bar above the numberplate aswell...needs a smidge of filler in there anyway where it was de-locked and has cracked. Might do that in black, not decided. Think i'll probabbly keep to the white/grey with a yellow pinstripe for the time being though!

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/309591_10150925118955054_816330053_21719703_199131 3628_n.jpg

However what the 2nd photo doesnt show, is that like a cabbage, i turned the spoiler over when it was tacky in places and the underside of said spoiler stuck itself to the newspaper. Also that the top has shedloads of overspray where the can ran out...D'oh. I'll get another tin tomorrow and re-do it. With a bit of luck the top side will sort out okay with some cutting compound.

Mirrors are now on the car, just gotta try and get the topside of the spoiler sorted out & re flat the bottom ready for paint 1st thing tomorrow...

EDIT: top of the spoiler came up okay with cutting compound, bottom was flatted back and then sprayed black...figure i'll try a two tone on it and see how it looks...worst comes to worst, it looks cack and i spray over it again as planned tomorrow morning!

Oh, and i've got a twin piston dump valve on its way
:(

pyromaniac_yeti
02-11-11, 11:26 PM
So the dumpvalve might not be to everyones taste, and do nothing for the performance - however personally i do like the sound!

Rally design springs just wont fit the FK's. Without modification anyway, had it apart today...the top of the spring is going to have to be ground out by approximately 2mm, and the spring seat on the coilover is going to have to recive a simmilar treatment.

I may have a word with some of the local engineering places tomorrow AM and see if they can sling it in a lathe or simmilar to open the inside of the spring up by that critical few mm.

This said, i raided the scrappy for an EGR valve and somehow managed to come home with an induction kit off a civic, a breather filter and a small tank to try and make a catch can with. Which failed miserably with curing the smoking...so i set about fixing the problem neatly. drilled a hole in the back of the fake K&N jobbie, hammered in the original breather inlet that i ripped out of the old airbox, gasket pasted it up and pinched the breather hose off Teddythom's MK1. resulted in a much neater engine bay, and no more smoking whenever its stationary! Still however need to find myself a 1.5 N/A inlet and an intercooler.
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/380831_10150927000995054_816330053_21732830_126705 0564_n.jpg
Realy think i should cut down the hose to the boost controller - however i dont want to do this untill i've decided on a final location for fitting, or even if i'll leave it on there as we had some severe boost spiking problems running one of theese exact controllers on a civic turbo a while back. I shall test it though - if it aint broke dont fix it and all that.

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/307847_10150927000680054_816330053_21732826_110281 9175_n.jpg

Piss poor picture, but at least you can see the new grill/mirror caps - a big improvement IMO. gotta do the boot handle if i get a chance tomorrow!

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/380361_10150927001455054_816330053_21732840_180134 679_n.jpg

Definately make an earlier start of it tomorrow though...ended up with it being pitch black, my car still in bits all over teddys drive, tools everywhere and nowhere near enough stuff done. And an invitation to sell the red MK1 for £40 :wtf:

Hopefully she'll be getting audio tomorrow aswell - picked up some 16CM FLI speakers to go in the doors, and dug out my sterio..which tbh, isnt brilliant but will do for the time being! :thumb:

gary_126
02-11-11, 11:57 PM
Id try get the spring seat and top cap on the coilover machined, or buy some springs from fk?

pyromaniac_yeti
03-11-11, 12:45 AM
Theres not enough material on the top cap to machine, and unfourtunately the spring seat cant be removed...yet.

however, the spring seats will be removable after i've done a smidge of trimming to em tomorrow...and then they'll be getting ground down a load, which combined with opening the springs up will hopefully allow for the clearance i need.

This also means that i'll know exactly where to go within 20mins drive that have springs in any poundage i could possibly want to get the handling right. Although at a MUCH later date i'll probbably swap everything out anyway for a full spax kit or something like that. Idk..its at the back of the list which sits so far as

1: Make it drive right. i.e corner correctly, stop, go, sort out the f*cking gear linkage and sticky clutch pedal.
2: Fit sterio, fit speakers, fix windows, fit a goddamn gaiter on the gearleaver
3: Wheels...pretty ones.
4: Rust/bodywork. Re underseal, get it in the bodyshop to get the arches seen to and the chassis rails/sills checked out and patched/replaced if needs be.

THEN comes massive intercoolers, huge turbo's, posh suspension etc.

Your right About the actuator hose.. its huge lol. Looking good though, its very nice to see another Sx TD :)

MK999
03-11-11, 07:32 PM
Boost controller hose is massively long as it was only on for testing with an iffy turbo lol

Grab handle was a er, temporary job and will need redoing properly really, I'm sure you'll see when you take it apart lol

pyromaniac_yeti
03-11-11, 10:47 PM
Got sod all done to it today - given up on the fk's and currently negotiating price on a spax -35mm kit...figure if that's the height they run for Tarmac rally then it's probably ideal for road use round here! Plus I can always drop a set of -60 springs on em if it's too high. Will update properly when I've got something useful done!

TeddyThom
04-11-11, 09:51 AM
That will be forever and a day then haha.

On a serious note, I have to remove my hub :/

How goes the negotiating?

pyromaniac_yeti
04-11-11, 08:37 PM
Done!

I'll get the bits tomorrow. Full spax -40mm kit w/shocks brand new for £150? Can't really complain. Bloke reckons he might have the t piece for the dump valve too which is bonus points really!

So for tomorrow, replace all shocks and springs, fit and wire head unit, fit speakers and possibly do the dv aswell. Better get a mission on eh? Lol

After getting messed about something stupid on the spax kit, ended up picking up this jamex -60mm jobbie on ebay for £75 which gets me out of the sh*t (even if it did mean a 160mile round trip to collect), and allows me time to spend arsing around with the coilovers to get them right. Get this fitted tomorrow, finish up my sterio wiring and get the thing tracked up...then i can actually get out and enjoy the car!

About bloody time. I just hope it doesn't rain tomorrow. lol.

pyromaniac_yeti
08-11-11, 12:28 AM
Got all that kit on today after a lot of aggro...rear setup is fine, i've actually got a bit of travel in the suspension now. Fronts ****ed...same as before, i belive part of the strut top is missing thats been binned when the coilovers were fitted...

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/305418_10150937485235054_816330053_21805113_114377 7505_n.jpg

She currently sits like so...

Also started work on that sodding gaffa taped arch. Looked proper, full on ****. Was winding me up, so i've decided to pack the thing right up with filler, paint it with touch up spray and then lots of cutting paste to get it to blend...sure it wont be brilliant, but it'll last for a month or two till i can get it done propperly.

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/393342_10150937485270054_816330053_21805114_130043 9945_n.jpg

After a good buzz over with the grinder i ended up with this. Not particularily good, but then i knew it was pretty bad underneath, and tbh theres a lot more good metal in it than i thought. Dont have any photos of it with the filler in, but belive me, it doesnt have any holes in it anymore - although the filler does need a proper good sanding!!

Also got the microswitch for the DV fitted up, suprisingly securely with some 5min epoxy glue...however i think i've picked up a duff solenoid from the scrappy so back to the drawing board on that one...

http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/375416_10150937485000054_816330053_21805108_535077 072_n.jpg

Rear suspension now looks like this...

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/299580_10150937485405054_816330053_21805116_102796 4613_n.jpg

Reckon im going to have to buy a tin of brush on underseal and give the whole damn thing a going over looking at that chassis rail though.

And then for bonus points i finished off the monster induction kit on teddythoms car - If anyones interested, its an ebay special kit for a fiat cinquecento sporting, with a 45 degree bend i found on a civic at the scrappy. sure the 90 elbow had to have the reducing section cut off with a stanley knife, but nothing extreme had to be done! (besides rotating the coil 45 degrees) Sounds particularily nice...which made me a little jealous untill my turbo spooled up :d

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/391517_10150937485005054_816330053_21805109_271121 663_n.jpg

Tomorrow i've gotta figure out what bit of my strut is missing, obtain two from the breakers, fit, get tracking done, sort sterio (wasnt touching the interior after the amount of muck i had on my hands!) and probbably get involved with the wheel bearing from hell once again on teddy's mk2...

I have to admit that does look a touch tasty.

Leave the turbo out of this :p

Don't forget we gotta mount up some brackets for the exhaust as well. Gonna start chopping up the one from Lola soon as well, I fancy a straight through pipe ;)

Any ideas on where I can store my engine and gearbox?? Have discovered I have no room in my shed/garden

pyromaniac_yeti
08-11-11, 11:26 AM
Idk...asked the man with the tools we don't have and the bike army if he's got any space? It won't fit in my garage cause that c90 diddnt - and that was a lot thinner than a nova engine!

I'll look for some pallets and tarp...

TeddyThom
08-11-11, 11:51 AM
Yeah I spoke to him. Plus I've seen what space he has got and believe me, there isn't enough to stand, let alone store engine and gearbox. Hmm. Shall have to browse elsewhere.

Any luck with said strut tops yet?

pyromaniac_yeti
08-11-11, 05:56 PM
Got two complete corsa struts for £30, i'll sell the leftover dampers & springs. Turns out half the strut tops actually missing!!

You gonna be in later? that way i can get the ring spanner off you to start stripping theese damn shockers down later and drop off a new pot of filler - tah for that btw!

pyromaniac_yeti

For a quick bodge up costing a fivers worth of filler...i've gotta say it isnt looking too sad. Think im going to sand it back and give it another very fine skim of filler all the way over and blend it in a bit better now i've got some better spreaders...

Head unit was fitted and wired...car now has audio - and those FLI speakers so far seem pretty much perfect for what i needed!

And then i took her out for a test drive, and paused to give her a quick blast over at a jetwash...cue picture whoring.

On the to do list now sits:

Replace DV solenoid valve & wire in.
Find loose connection preventing drivers window from going down
Get T piece and fit DV
Paint/replace the damn yellow knobs/stalks
Replace all the LED's that are currently in the dash (they dont light the gauges up)
Redo arch repair (still not 100% happy with the line, and the paint got ruined by the rain that night!)

Then pay some debts off, save some money and go at it for round two which consists of:

Big FMIC
15" dishy wheels, polished lip, black centre...
Increased boost/fuelling
Gsi kit

Although theese items sit a fair bit off in the distance due to the £££ involved :(

Either way, she looks pretty as she sits, drives lovely and im more than happy to have put the hours in over the past week or so to have got it to this stage! Massive thanks to teddy for the use of his driveway/tea making skills! :thumb:

Yeah you thank me bitch ;) you also forgot suspension rebuilding skills, sticking my (rather large) hands in between your damned doors to sort out the bloody wiring for your speakers. Speaking of which I have a funny feeling I'm goin to have to do that again to sort out your leccy window. Might be a dodgy connection near the relay or even a dodgy relay (hopefully!) but I suspect a busted wire somewhere... Unsure without proper investigation though.

Reckon it is worth putting a thread up about mine?

Drivers side window has a sticky button, developed while it was sat so it might just need some brake cleaner round it or similar.

D'oh.

On her first big run down to brighton, with computer parts heading to the old bill station she let me down :(

as i was all but there, the tacho dropped to 500revs...thought nothing of it, got there checked it out and found the alternator loose. brilliant.

Drove it back as was, started taking it apart to find the adjuster bolt had actually sheared off and had to be taken out of the car to get it off. which ment removal of the radiator, and the oil lines to the vaccum pump which piggybacks the alternator...

Little bit of modification to the stump of bolt with the dremel, and a tap with the impact driver...

And pinched a replacement adjuster bolt off of teddy

Whack it all back together tomorrow, the vac hose wasnt bolted down propperly either so im wondering if this is the cause of the battery warning light/brake warning light issues i've been having. I'll clean the connectors right out on all the leccy plugs anyway just incase its one of them thats causing a duff reading to the dash while i've got it out. I dont plan on pulling it again for a LONG time!! :thumb:

Im contemplating referring to this car as "Project problem child" from now on...lol

More like "Project Teddy please help me fix it again" lollol

Got it all lined up and bolted in at like half twelve last night, bloody weather stopped play again, so when I left him, the rad was half in, the alternator/vacuum pump was all plumbed in and waiting on adjustment, and some hoses needed re-attaching, then coolant level all put back up. Haven't heard from Iain this morning, so either the nova has killed him, or he is still asleep. lol

Iain has infact not got himself killed or fallen asleep,

He's tweaked the fueling to the point where the smoke is just about acceptable, and increased the boost to 17psi. The thing is shockingly quick, the way it pulls when on boost is unreal considering what it is!! Did experiment with running it a little more fuel, however it got quite hot so wound it back from 20psi down to 17 and reduced the fuelling quarter of a turn. I plan to run it back up when my intercooler gets here & fitted - big thanks to phil for swapping for my springs for it!

I'll also be fitting an N/A inlet manifold at that point to try and extract the best from the engine & make the cooler routing a lot easier! Other than that, not a lot to update. Waiting on the gods of photoshop before i decide on wheels for the car

As some of you may or may not know, i'd been having issues with the boost control.

Belive this has been tracked down to the overboost valve gaffa tape coming off, and as such the valve part opening. Suggestions on where i'd get a bolt big enough to block the hole off would be greatly appreciated!

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/306301_10150973799070054_816330053_21954674_288883 137_n.jpg

This said, i went to clean the boost controller out and found that the T piece isnt just a T at all...its actually got a little ball valve thing that i dont thinks reacted particularily well to the increase. I've stripped the boost controller down too to check for a spring/ball valve in there, but it appears to have already been moved....blowing through the pipes it now reacts like it's supposed to!

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/302606_10150973799090054_816330053_21954676_102853 2237_n.jpg

This would explain why it kept cutting out to around 10psi and holding there perfectly...if the boost controllers being scrambled by that little ball valve and shutting out the controller...and then when it does get half a chance to do its job the overboost valve kicks in and dumps most of the boost

Either way, i'll whack it back together tomorrow morning when i can see the turbo, let alone the actuator...and i'll try and set it to a couple PSI before the overboost opens up so that it'll boost reliably untill such times as i can find a suitable method of blocking off the valve.

I welded my valve up but if you like I will sell you an inlet with out one in.. very rare inlet to as it was made with the valve and the giant heater.

pyromaniac_yeti

Think ill probbably fit an N/A inlet long term & weld the valve up in the meantime. Inlet choice is going to have to wait till the IC pipeworks figured out

Does the heater do much or can they be removed? iv got an n/a inlet for mine but theres no heater boss in it.

You may notice if its minus 20.. I removed mine a couple of years ago and have never had a problem.. just unplug though.. dont leave it there or join the wires as its a giant glow plug.

Which fooking pikey used duct tape to try and seal the safety release valve:eek:

When we did my cav, we unscrewed it and went to a local bolt place near Baxter's (where we were doing the fuel/boost mods) and replaced it with a solid metal screw in cap, duct tape, and i thought id seen all possible pikey bodges too!!!

If thats got a ball n spring in it, that kinda implies its some form of relief valve?

Haven't really kept up on this thread so dunno what the boost controller setup is on that car though lol

The gaffa tape wasnt me, but in all fairness he did use cable ties too...

Boost controller is a standard ebay spec bleed valve...**** knows what the spring was all about, but now its gone ive got accurate boost control and pretty much zero spiking. Need another grub scre to lock it off though as mine vibrated out.

Got my intercooler through aswell. I plan to mount it in the bay, box it in, run a cold air feed in and cut a chunk of bonnet out to vent the hot air. Less piping, less lag is the theory behind it...and if it doesnt work so well then ill buy a bigger one and front mount that.

Jack
22-11-11, 01:58 PM
You'd be better off front mounting it from the start IMO. I'm not sure where you could box it in, the only place I could envisage would be either in the front above the exhaust manifold (ouch lol) or under the scuttle panel where you'd need a massive scoop and ducted venting to let the air out to make it even half as effective as a FMIC.

Or are you thinking of a sort of top mount? You'd need a decent vent to capture air, not a vent to let hot air out; and even then a FMIC would be ideally preferable as it won't suffer heat soak.

Balley

Mine worked better like this IMO than with a FM.. Only just though and I did blow the end off at 32psi that is the main reason for my FM conversion. and the fact I wanted to run a Bigger turbo..

I fixed it...back runing full boost, reliably and loving it. to quote teddy "my nova did pretty well up here the other night, managed a steady 60mph all the way up bluebell hill"

At which point i felt the need to burst his bubble and gesture at the satnav ticking up to 83.lol

However, now i know whats required i can offer for sale blanking kits for the overboost valve for £10 posted to wherever. This is for a plug rated to over 4000psi, with a gasket on it just to make 100% sure that its sealing propperly. Tested to 17psi on my own car, and i intend on pushing it further! PM me if interested.

However following a demonstration of how quick a tweaked TD is, his car got a shower of soot chunks where i've been massively overfuelling the past few days with this boost issue! Nice to know i've got a clear exhaust now though...lol

All in a good night, was good to bounce some ideas around with what to do next to the cars tbh. And should anyone ask the question "whats a -60mm kit look like compared to standard" again then you've got perfect side by side comparison photo's...though i think his is getting dropped in the very near future, its all a case of funds...same thing thats stopping me progressing with my IC& dumpvalve...

Found the scource of my leccy window problems, bodged up wiring. Two wires soldered with heatshrink, the remaining four with some massive crimp connectors with cut wires hanging out the back. i'll set about fixing that in the morning with some terminal blocks (again, not the proper way to do it, however they've never let me down whereas the crimp connectors have repeatedly ****ed me over!)

Got my gaping hole in the floor/spongy gearknob sorted too

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/310375_10150989327010054_816330053_22017496_874271 862_n.jpg

Ripspeed boot kit...says universal on the pack in halfrauds, but it is infact the EXACT size for a nova. £15

Halfords own brand leather (real leather apparently too..) gearknob kit £15.

Diddent want anything too shiney & blingy. Want it to look like its meant to be that way, much like the interior's been done - talking of which, its now been decided. Im dying the carpets black to match everything else, removing the rear seats and carpeting over the metal. It's just going to make work so much easier...i may get a half cage to go in the back aswell to complete the fast road look, but its not getting bucket seats & harnesses and all that bollocks.

Probbably get some hate for that, but the rear bench isnt all it looks...theres no bracket for the 60-40 split, and nobody except mark can get it to fold down as you've got to pull the buttons out and jam yer fingers inside the seat. Belive me, it will be getting kept for a later date when i can sort the little issues with it, but for the time being we're going on a slight diet.
