Hi, well I decided after owning for about 6 months to get on with the latest project.
The car is a 2 door H plate saloon (mk1) that was very nicely modified and in very good condition with a heavily modified 1.3 8v stock rod engine. Came from a member on here!
Pictures from when I got her.

But it is destined to become a fully stripped, non road legal, xe powered track car. With a view to let it in the future.

Already got the xe engine, out of a nova so came with driveshafts and some mounts ready. F20 gearbox, with brand new clutch.
Need to find some twin 45 carbs for it, apart from that and ARP rod bolts engine will be standard

Then I got the seats, red cobra monaco and a cheap steering wheel and boss (£10 off ebay!)
The seats came with an office chair base, so if anyone wants to make me an offer for it? Just the base with plate ready to bolt a bucket seat on.

Yes it is! It looks better in the pics than in real life. Underneath and all the important areas are solid, but the arches and doors starting to go but not bothered on a track car!

who built the stock rod engine mate ??

who built the stock rod engine mate ??
Not sure who built the engine, it was done by the previous owner. He told me that it was a mate of his that did the rebuild and was well respected within the stock car scene and he trusted him
The engine is fantastic and very powerful, just not an xe so not my cup of tea.
Below is the engine detail from the original sale ad when I purchased the car
ENGINE/GEARBOX
originally a 1.4 sr.
it has been fully re-built with a piper stock rod cam, piper adjustable vernier,1.6 head, diesel valve springs, ngk spark plugs, lighten and balanced flywheel, twin choke pierburg carb set up so that both chokes open at the same time, K and N air filter. when the engine was rebuilt it also had new distributer cap, rotor arm, leads, cambelt kit, water pump, starter motor, altunater belt, samco water hoses, coil, radiator, clutch, fuel pump, no expense was spared on the engine. have
the engine was professionally tuned up on a rolling road at mark shilabear race design in launceston, cornwall, where its output was 95bhp. this was done not long after the engine was rebuilt and has done just under 5k since. oil changes have reguarly been done, every 1.5k.the engine idles very lumpy with this cam and will not tick over properly until fully warmed up.
the gearbox is from a nova sri, its a f10 with a cr 3.94 ratio.

Been a few months since I have done anything with the car but as it is going in for the engine bay strengthening/plating next week (and hopefully the cage welding in) I decided I best get on with it!
So on Saturday I got the tools out and set to work, got the bay completely stripped except steering rack. Got the fuel tank out and the exhaust off. Took the rest of the interior trim and carpets out and trial fitted the main part of the roll cage.

Small update:
As the car will be back from its welding soon I decided I needed to get on and get the engine ready. First step was to tackle the workshop, clear it up and get the work surface ready for the engine and gearbox.
I got the gearbox out and realised it was a F16 and not a F20 as I first thought, which it better for a c20xe?
Up on the side, note the ratchet strap so I could hang the edge off the side!

That's a standard manifold
Thanks, didnt realise they were stainless steel as standard!
They are indeed - the F16 are virtiually identical to the F20, apart from the FD - but agreed that sludgey death doesnt look ideal. Looks like its had a bit of water in there and got hot - that, or its been mixed 100 times with different viscosity oils over the years!
I preferred my c20xe with F16, acceleration was better than F20.
Some people say they're not as strong as F20 but I disagree, I never had any issued even though its got its head kicked in lol
paul080803

Gonna stick with the F16, clean it out and then change the oil again after a few hundred miles. Hopefully it will be fine!!

As you can see all the coolant pipes are full of crusty, rusty flakes. The pipes were full of them too.
Is the engine goosed? What would be best to do to it?
it'll be fine, just flush it out with a hose
Its probably hasn't been ran with much anti freeze hence the rust
paul080803
07-04-12, 11:34 PM
I am going to whip the head off, when I get some spline drive sockets, and then flush it through with a hose pipe.
It turns over well, oil was nice and clean and generally engine seems in good nick (except loom is butchered) so I think it will be fine.

Another update, got to love a long weekend!!
Got some spline drive sockets so I could take the cambelt off and then the cylinder head. Glad I did as the headgasket was leaking as I suspected, between the middle two cylinders on both sides. Apart from that the block, and pistons look in great condition (apart from dirty and in need of a clean and paint) :thumb:

Every single tappet moved nice and freely, however in 3 of them the domed shape washer inside is missing. I have removed them all and got them in a tin ready to strip and soak in oil whilst rebuild the engine. So if anybody has 3 new/used ones I would be interested in buying them!
The valves sit below the face of the head, so I think it hasnt been skimmed before. Next job is to whip them all out and send the head for a very light skim.

Took a trip across to see nova gem 1970 today and pick up some wheels, nice guy and his nova is looking very clean and shiney :thumb:

Done some more and a mixed view of good and bad!
Carried on with the block, turned it over to remove the sump and was greated with 2 snapped sump bolts in the block

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu310/paul080803/Nova%20saloon/IMG_2839.jpg
So I cleaned up and painted the sump instead

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu310/paul080803/Nova%20saloon/IMG_2848.jpg
Then I decided to get a new block, the two snapped bolts have been attempted to be removed in the past and chewed up the mating face to the sump gasket plus there is some other damage on the block. A few minutes after putting up a wanted ad a member said he had one so a 45 minute drive later and I picked up a few bits :thumb:

Ummm no, should I?
Ignore him, he likes pointless heavy things. lol
Seam sealer is supposedly to keep water out of, well seams, but more often than not it just traps any moisture in them and rots it out from the inside from what I've seen. Personally I wouldn't and won't be using it on my car.

I just prefer the looks to exposed stitch welds, and the thought of no moisture in the seams.

Nova hatchbacks and saloons share the exact same suspension components. In fact whenever I've tried rear coilovers on a hatchback they caught on the inner arch but don't on my loon but that could be down to Nova tolerances lol.

So I gave the car a couple of coats of colour. Came out ok for £20 and rattle cans. It is only a track car so I wanted it to be presentable but also repairable/maintainable by me at home with a spray can.

lob some lacquer on and it will look awesome
Looks good. Agree its nice to have things 'touch up'able on a track car but my experience of rattle canned bays if they just go filthy quickly and any petrol contact strips the paint. Is there some petrol resistant lacquer you can use?
paul080803
26-05-12, 10:50 PM
I thought on a solid colour then it doesnt have a lacquer?
If I should lacquer it then do I need to wet sand first or last?
Edit: Just seen Iain's post - so lacquer more for resistance to dirt/petrol etc than for a nice shiney finish!
looks very flat and non shiny to me hence my lacquer comment, maybe its just the pictures. if lacquering all you need to do is key it up with scotch
paul080803
26-05-12, 10:57 PM
Thanks, it is a bit shinier than the pics make it look but I will go for some lacquer to shine it up a bit and to make it more resistant.
exactly at least the lacquer is another layer to protect it.
