So stubby mirrors, who was it who first made them?
Who els has made them, and does anyone know how many sets there are about, and whats the going rate to buy a set of them?

Scott

Graeme
17-10-11, 09:18 PM
I have two incomplete sets, one was Ste L's and one was Craig Greens paid about sixty quid for each set. Need to sort them out really, definately wouldn't put them on anything other than a show car only, they look very delicate and breakable

scott.parker
17-10-11, 09:23 PM
Are you willing to share any pics of them Graeme?

Graeme
17-10-11, 09:44 PM
Neither set is in my possesion at the minute as both need work, one is with a friand and the other is at Brett's bodyshop for finishing, when I get them back I'll put some pictures up

Cut it down to fit with a glass cutter

If only it was that easy....... Creating the rounded corners so the glass looks stock is a lot harder than you may think! On the whole they are a nightmare to make well hence the reason Dave wont do anymore. The hours I put into the last set was ridiculous. However they did look fantastic on both of my previous novas and Ive never seen a set quite as short yet.

This is interesting seeing the different ways some of you are doing these, how did you get round doing your glass after doing the body's that way Austin?

mowgli
20-10-11, 12:20 PM
i probably didn't do a very good job of explaining it.. buy some flat car grade mirror glass, and make up a template, then take it to the local glass cutter....

Alex J
20-10-11, 12:24 PM
basildon glass will cut them if you send than a template.

Austin_Nova16
20-10-11, 12:28 PM
The glass was cut on the edge nearest to the door. So it kept the same height on the outermost side.. Need to get some more cut actually as one is slightly chipped.

scott.parker
20-10-11, 12:33 PM
Ah, cool that how i thought was best to do it, didn't think cutting the curved end was a good idea made no sense to make more work then need be etc..

Cheers.

for the glass
make a template from card then buy one of those mirror repair kits cut out the template an stick it on

I don't like mine too short, just subtly different. Mine are still remote adjustable etc.

scott.parker
14-11-11, 04:28 PM
Interesting, everyone's doing them differently so far, but no one's shown how Dave did his on the origanls..

Well i wanted to have a go, but wanted to retain as much strength and use as little fiberglass/fillers as possible, and also wanted to make some that retain all the internal adjustment mechanism etc, and i too don't like "too short" look, as they end up being taller then they they do wide and IMO look wrong, so i wanted to make them almost square or equal looking.

So here's what Ive achieved so far..

http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/9403/photo0883i.jpg

Ive got a lot of work left to finish the frame and backs off perfectly, and Ive spent around 10hrs total physical working on them to get them to this stage, at the moment the backs are removable still, and they are really solid already, but i am tempted to glue the backs on to give them even more rigidity once there finished.

I'll post more pics once Ive done more work on them.

I'm used to my van mirrors (spend 8hours a day driving) now my Astra mirrors seem too small... :(

scott.parker
14-11-11, 07:37 PM
Benn, but do you have a rear view on the van? as most driving in vans etc is done using wing mirrors so you need them more, but in my Astra i use the rear view more then the wings etc, and look over my shoulder for safety etc, as for the glass, I'm not sure yet mate, not cut it or fitted them onto a car, but Ive removed around 2 inches from the body, so the field of view will be inside the quarter light diving bar, instead of it being in the way of the mirror view.

No, no rear windows. My rear view mirror vibrates alot is the prob... I always look over my shoulder, but am just used to looking in my wing mirrors...

scott.parker
14-11-11, 07:53 PM
Vibrates allot on your nova? Check my vids mines virtual still.. i placed some double sided foam under the mount stop vibrations full stop. I might look into getting a BIG rear view mirror for the Nova as you have no room to move once your strapped into the seat.

More progress on these...

so Ive still put NO filler on these yet, Ive filled any gaps with plastic i had from cutting them about etc, there looking pretty good, but taking longer doing them this way, but should be more solid and less chance of any filler cracks once painted etc.

So some pics of them.

Or... Make some for my self, figure out how to do it, then I'll make more to sell...

Scott,

My opinion, for what it's worth, is that the only way you will ever make money is to take a mould from your finished mirrors, and new sets can then be laid up (or injection moulded?) each time.

There's never going to be a wage in the job for the time it will take to custom make them, even once you've perfected the technique.

If they're moulded they can then be laid up in carbon fibre, I reckon there'll be more demand if they can be made in a high-end finish like that.

So, a bit more filler and rubbing off, then another prime, almost there, the frames are done, the covers just need one more rub off filler prime then there good to go, and the frames will get treated to a bumper texture paint i got.
