Hi all,

I am currently breaking my 02 Astra Coupe and I was looking at the central dash console and it was looking very tired and scratched.

I want to sell most things on ebay and looking around I saw that a couple of chaps were selling stuff with carbon wrap that seem pretty popular.

So I thought, lets give it a whirl - purchased from ebay sufficient wrap to do the central dash, ash tray, around the gear stick and under the hand brake.

First time I've played with this stuff and it seems OK to use .

Started with this rather sorry panel that goes under the handbrake :-

Then after about 10 mins with the hot air gun and my scalpel I ended up with this :-

Quite pleased with the results - looks miles better than the original!

PS Mike, I'm not doing you out of a job, just a cheap alternative - if it was mine I would be getting the real thing!

lol lol its an easy way to make money on eBay tho Joff! As you know, I do alot of wrapping with real carbon, so always keeping my eyes out for whats selling & what isn't on eBay.

Interesting snippet of info: all these top end marques of cars with carbon dash & door inserts (Mercs, Bentleys, Aston etc etc) there just the OE wood vernier item with a carbon wrap ;)

Its just heated up then wrapped round the edges and trimmed off - you can't see this bit when fitted so it isn't that neat!

Nicely done, would be interested in seeing how the full set turns out. The centre console etc in my coupe is looking pretty second hand too so I might give this a go.

It'll give it a deeper shine, obviously wont be glass smooth, but will look even better.

Dont expect to get this kinda finish tho...

That's not bad... vinyl wrap that can be laquered. Would come in handy for a few things.

Seems to be coming out ok.

The main dash looks like it might be tricky as the dash folds back on itself around where the display unit sits....

how well is it slotting together? i found out if you have close fitting edges it gets very tight (like the cd draw slot on my xbox)

I took the ash tray apart to do it properly - PING - went a spring across the kitchen! - I eventually got it all back together - had to have a look on the Astra Owners Club site to get the spring back in the right place - however it all moves in and out without catching - this is the only moving bit on the dash bits I am doing .

However the wrap is quite thick so where tolerances are fine you may have issues.

I had some samples of it a while back, but binned them :( its great but a little thick if doing close fitting panels

The 3m stuff is best, its ment to be breathable, so when you stick it down it wont get bubbles... Works well and does beath as i wrapped the lid of my netbook with it, no matter how badly you lay it on it does trap air.

Stuart
20-10-11, 01:28 PM
its actually the glue structure that has air paths in it to let you push the air out as opposed to it being breathable.

I've also seen Avery do one with tiny tiny glass beads in the glue that keep it off the surface you are covering until you apply pressure and it compresses the beads into the glue and lets the air out at the same time :s mental tech going into sticky backed plastic thesedays

Will stop spamming this thread now ;) - finally to add, the dash parts look good. Like how you've alternated the direction of the 'weave' across the gear stick surround / ash tray, breaks up what could be a large area and adds a little detail - top job!

Oh yea, whilst we're on similiar subject, I was using some Sigmatex today for some protyping for JLR. Looks like dry carbon, feels like dry carbon, cuts like it, wets out like it & even trims exactly the same (not chewy on air grinder or anything) but its twice the price of normal 2x2 twill pattern & not even real lol lol

It looks good, shot blasts the same & polish's up pukka mind.
