basicly today and for the rest of the week im working 9 to 5 but after that i start working on call (not by choice at all) at that runs from 8pm to 8 am

so after my normal shift i get a 3 hour break then have to wait around all night for phone calls to go out to, but then HAVE TO start work at 9 in the morning  so i only get 4 hours away from work a day.

all i get for being on call is a base of 15 quid and then time and a half wich adds to about 8 quid a hour

this cant be right can it, my manager says you sometimes get to start later but only if you are acculy called out making out like waiting about for the phone to ring is lesuire time or something!

yeah same as mine used to be but you get the 15 quid regardless if you do nothing?? thats why i used to do what i wanted until the calls came in then go to work get the van and away you go

Hiya, n00b here.

You are entitled, by law, to a minmum 11hours away from work. Unless you "opt out" of the european working time directive. This may be included in your contract of employment, or if you have never signed a contract your employer could claim it was verbally agreed when you started. However, if you have opted out in the past, and hundreds of thousands of shift workers in the uk have, you are entitled to opt back in at any time you like.

Basically, you're entitled to the minimum 11 hours and if you want them off then nobody can force you to work.

But there's a catch. Your employer is likely to say that as you no longer meet the job requirements they're making you redundant. It can go either way, if the employer is just being a knob then quoting the working time directive may make them backtrack. I worked call outs for years and hated every minute of it. If its a one week on on two or three weeks off then it's not so bad. Every week is totally unreasonable though. :) Hope that helps.

You're lucky to get 15 quid stand by! I got **** all when I was a recovery driver. I did monday to friday 9am till 5pm in the garage, then was on call the rest of the time including weekends. My boss said I was taking the piss when I asked for Thursday nights off lol.

TJ, its hardly cold enough to need your heating sorting...... and tbh, who has ever needed their meter sorting after hours, ever??? you call out the plumber in the morning, and if he says 'meters shagged' then its the usual 24hr service, as in you wait for 24hrs till someone comes out.....

mostly it will be insurance fires at kebab houses....

never know mate people get pissed off when there card meters go empty and the card or key stops working, and apprantly its mainly druggies and piss artist when you go out to them
