View Full Version : driveshafts
just put the shafts hubs and wheels back on the car
when lying under the car with everything bolted on i can nearly pull the cv out the gearbox
if i grab the shaft i can push it and pull it between the wheel and gearbox
****ed cv?

have you put the car on the ground?
its not on stands any more but on ramps so should have the weight on it
even then ive never had shafts come out when jacking up, the inner cv moves up and down the shaft a few inches

The shaft will move out a bit with the car jacked and the wheels dropped full but as you say shouldn't fall out. Take the shaft off and see if the CV's pull off without removing the circlip.
nah they dont, i double checked them before i put them on
its as if its splined part of the cv that goes in the box is wrong but it definitely has 22 splines
what actualy holds it in the box? just it being bolted to the hub along with the bottom arm and tiebar etc?

Did you have to smack it a bit to get it in the gearbox end, sounds like you haven't pushed the inner CV in enough to lock it in.
the splined part goes into the gearbox pretty easy and if i pull the shaft towards the wheel and the cv towards the gearbox its fine
the shaft isnt moving position on the circlip inside the cv the inside of the cv is moving in and out with the shaft as i pull the shaft towards the wheel and when i do the cv falls out the box

They never slide in and out easily on the gearbox side, you should feel quite a lot of resistance getting it in and out.
Should be tight like so

if the cv pulls out of the box youve got the wrong length of shaft in there even with a "sloppy" cv it shudnt pull out of the box
ill have another look tomorrow, been pissing down with rain today while working on it and fed up lol
if it was the wrong shaft what other cars come with a shorter shaft?
lol thats a good option mr mowgli, like i said ill have a better look tomorrow and make sure im pushing it far enough in
should there be a circlip sorta thing on the end of the wplined part that goes into the box? if that was missing would it cause it to fall out?
they can hit the circlip on the gear, and make you think you have them in enough. you really have to give them some welly to get them properly in, it will run like it is, but the oil will leak out going up the rd, as the seal simply won't seat properly, and swapping one of those is an ordeal in its own right
ill take the hub assembly off tomorrow so i can access it better and give it a wack
you undo the bottom joint & use the hub as a slide hammer...
another question while your here mowgli, whats the standard ignition advance whilst cranking on my 20seh?
another question while your here mowgli, whats the standard ignition advance whilst cranking on my 20seh?
according to haynes, the carb ones are 10deg btdc with no advance... Its a good starting point, as the seh std ignition doesn't appear to be adjustable
right heres a video for you folks of the troubles im having

i say that the cog has slipped inside the box. the part where the cv locks into.

defanatly wrong shaft shudnt be able to move that much at all
anyone have the length of the short shaft? ive just uploaded another video of me with a spare cv trying it inside it ill post it in a sec
also i can see the cog inside the gearbox that hase the splines in it to lock into so it hasnt slipped down
heres a video with the spare cv joint, the joint is going right in and spinner the splines of the gearbox

looks like youve got a sloppy diff aswell
Drop the diff cover and see what is going on.
i take it you have an f16/20 box with the necessary big block inner cv's & 22 spline shafts..... check the little wire clip on the end of the splines. definitely check if the diff is loose & tighten it up. and if you plan to whack the cv in, use the hub as a slide hammer method. it isn't getting all the way in.
right figured it out, me being as stupid as i am thought the cv's had to have 22 and not the shafts
none of my shafts are 22 spline only the cv's so i have the wrong shafts, i have 1 correct cv which has 22 splines inside and fits perfectly into the box
so now i need 1 cav inner cv and a set of 22 spline shafts

right swedge, you have nothing to lose here.. if the balls come out the cv's ok & you can swap the inner pieces over, why not have a go at creating a set?
