i work at Tesco, It sucks i usually go by if they look old enough then there fine. if in doubt i I.D them, but i risk a £5,000 fine. so none of us do it to annoy, the stupid rule is there, so most follow.
Omg that's shocking lol.
I've only been asked for ID once since actually getting ID :( Asda have started asking who's paying for the shopping though if there is booze...so Burgo normally tends to get asked for ID lol lol
You can't really blame the shops being cautious for booze and stuff, but BBQ sauce etc is just stupid, completely missing the point of ID/age checks to try and avoid underage alcohol abuse?!
I get asked for ID a fair amount despite being 24 but I have the facial-hair growing ability of a 14 year old.
Awesome lol
My mate & his missus were out shopping & when at the till (xmas time this was) his missus got asked for ID for a 12A film lol lol my mate went crackers at the cashier & got chucked out the store lol
Tesco had every right to ask him for ID, I work under the same principles in Sainsbury's. If you want to buy chocolates containing alcohol gotta have ID, sparklers? ID, the new Fifa game we just got in stock? ID (no idea why tbh).
Its a £5000 fine and/OR 6 months in prison for serving someone underage, granted this guy was old enough but he couldn't prove his age so the till monkey wasn't going to take the risk. I do it all the time too, no ID no sale.

My friend who works at Morissons is exactly the same, he'd rather get abuse for asking then risk the flack he'd get.
i'm more shocked that the muppet was buying it.... any alcohol that could possibly be in it will get evaporated away by the cooking process anyway.
Where's the news here? Young-ish looking bloke got asked for ID because he was buying a product with alcohol in it, as is plainly publicized company policy (for most places now). Must have been a slow news day.

I've had a lot of abuse over the years for it one being not so long ago lol not supposed to but I just tell them to **** off and not come back, then get threats of "I'll see you later" 6 years in the job and not one person has seen me later :(

As pointed out above, pretty standard procedure due to the fines/****storm involved, for all the guy at the counter knew that was a Govt. agency sending a 17yo in to check their practice/issues fines etc.
In my previous job I ID'd someone that turned out to be 42 as I wasn't sure he looked over 25.

I thought so, he didn't for some reason lol
My mate got asked for id when she was buying a pudding in weatherspoons once. !
And i went out with some girls in town a few weeks back and all the girls in front of me were asked for id before getting into the club but as i stepped up driving licence in hand, the guy said "nah your alright!" HAha i would of been offended if i wasnt laughing so much.

Have to be 18 to be in some bars to avoid buying drinks as a group and passing round to the underage, I've been ID'd in a bar for a coke. Asked what would have happened if I didn't have it on me and they said quite straight to me they would have shown me the door.

Lol funny you say that, a couple of lasses have said I "look hot" in my uniform and they pop round to see me lmao both of them are about 22/23

I've never ID'd someone in there 40's lol 32 is my best so far and he was chuffed! lol I usually ask the older ladies (late 30's -40's) for ID for a laugh and it usually cheers them up and gets a laugh or they get flirty lmao
bathfart, when they said hot, could they have meant sweating in a lee evans style????

Why would you get annoyed at being asked for id its stupid just show them geez its a compliment in my eyes lol
ahh... but this wonderful isle has no strict carrying ID. law...... it should, then illegal immigrants, pikeys, con artists etc would soon be out of business, and also only adults will be allowed to buy booze & fags, then leave the shop & sell it to the kids, like what happens in our area.....

Happens often at my store too, a few people have been barred out of it others get barred from buying age restricted products, only to be allowed to buy age restricted things again a year or two later.
of course they do..... they are older by then you turnip
I work at the Co-Operative, and we have a silly rule that if they look under 25 then ask for ID.
Don't get me wrong, it covers my back like, never had anyone moan about me asking either.
One lad that use to work with us asked for ID for some lad, bout 5oclock, lad threatened him and said he would wait for him, came to 9 when we close and was waiting in the carpark for him lol
Some people take it far too serious.
last week at the local co-op, i got the girl to check the stock room for a certain cider that was on offer...none... so i asked her to check the secret staff stashing shelf.....result, i got some......lol

The couple of weatherspoons i've been in have been extremely strict on ID. I've only had ID in the last 2/3 months...the last time I went to weatherspoons with friends we were allowed in as a group but due to me having no ID had to sit in the family area and leave at 10. We hadn't noticed that the manager kept walking past and numpty here took a swig from a friends drink as he did. We ended up all kicked out and everyone had to leave their newly ordered drinks behind. I felt so guilty
of course they do..... they are older by then you turnip
Well durr but I mean the people that were barred out are allowed back in to buy age restricted products, they should be barred out permanently and be given a £5000 fine (which you can receive for supplying under age people)

Asda/Tesco/Sainsburys also use that rule and its not silly, its there to stop underage people buying alcohol and to stop you getting put in prison for selling it to someone underage, you'll know that trading standards send in test purchases that are younger than 18 and look a lot younger than 25 so obviously should be asked for ID, if you fail that you get an on the spot £80 fine, then you go to court (possibly prison but not likely on your first offence), your shop may appear in the local paper which could bring more kids trying to get served, trading standards will keep hitting you to see if your manager is keeping up with training, your shop could lose its license to sell alcohol (could also lose your lottery license if they test you on that and you fail) lose sales, head office closes the shop and you lose your job, worst case scenario obviously.
Nothing silly about a rule put in place to protect you.
Surely thats entrapment though? lol

You do look about 12 though. lol
Wetherspoons are hot on it to be fair; probably due to their stereotype customer though. I did get asked (when I say "asked", it was more of a "demanded") once in there to show ID when I had no hair, the barman's face was a picture when I showed him my photocard license and said words akin to "Sorry, I don't look much like that at the mo due to the chemo" lol
You do look about 12 though. lol
Very true lol
Surely thats entrapment though? lol
If anyone fails to ID a trading standards test purchaser then they deserve punishment, its obvious as can be and they're not allowed to make themselves look older (make up and whatever lads can do)
I didnt mean it like that, but when a bloke comes into the shop with more hair on his bloody face than I have all over my body, and wants some booze then I aint going to waste his or my time.
I see why it's their but the way the co-op try to enforce to the extent they do is silly.
If they look under 21 then I ID, but 25 is a bit too old to ID imo.

Funny that I've had the same thing. By a girl I actually worked with. I couldn't believe it.
Now something has been said about ID and not getting ID'd for ages, I guaruntee now one of us on here will get ID'd for something stupid within the next week.

Well it certainly wont be me, most people think I'm in my 30's  unless Asda have applied the "Do they look 30" rule like they were apparently going to do a couple of years ago.
It'll just keep going up and up until eventually a bus pass is a valid form of photo ID.

I remember when i was 20 and some laws were different......
that after work one day I went to fill my car up and whilst i was paying for the fuel, i asked for some cigs to complete my transaction, the cashier asked for ID for the fags.... needless to say i quoted that they had served me petrol and I had to be 16 for that, yet I cant get fags without ID to prove I was 16...... regardless of the fact I drove the car to get there!
Go figure!
I got asked for ID for the lottery once, and handed him a Pink/Full driving license, and he spent a minute scouring it for the birth date...

Just because you can drive doesn't mean you're old enough.
Someone once tried to use the fact they had a tattoo as ID, when I was at college at 16 a lass of the same age had a tattoo which she'd gotten before her 16th birthday
As a few people have said, shop workers can get proper f**ked if they serve underage people, hence they get told to ID anyone at all who they suspect are under 25......
I used to get ID'd a fair bit a few years ago, not so much anymore though. Depends a lot on who you are with, what you are buying, what clothes you're wearing etc

What he means is, driving there isn't necessarily legal/of age.

the point i was trying to make was they let me get and pay for the fuel, which i had to be 16 to get the fuel, the very same 16 that i needed to be to get the cigs, its a bit like walking into an off'ie and they id you for a lighter, but not the 4 pack... which also happened
you lot!!!!! i don't go in B&Q on a thursday anymore, after someone decided to see if i qualified for the pensioner discount!!!

When I was 20 I always got asked for ID so to take the total pee I used to carry all my ID around (my mates will vouch for this) as I carried my passport, driving licence, prove my age card and NI card, all the bar people got rather peed off when it took me 10 minutes of there time to serve everyone behind the bar.
This was though when a 10 pack of regal king size cost 99p, if only now lol
This is why I always carry a sawn off, just incase of that akward moment infront of a que of people when you get ID'd for bying a Bambi DVD :(

I Never use to get ID'd when i was under age, and i used to buy fags/beer etc.. even porn mags! lol at age 13.
When i got to 18 i got a prove it card (lol who's still got one? the pic rubs off!) and then i still didn't get ID'd, so i stopped carrying it, soon as i turned 21 i got ID'd all the time till about 24, and then out the blue a few weeks back me and Carrie was shopping in Tesco of all places, and the lad who was under age, had to ask another member of staff if he could sell the alcohol, and they then ID'd me i was happy! lol lol lol
Last time I got I'd'd was about 5 years ago, was an over 21's bar and they were checking everyone that looked under 30. My only I'd was my driving licence that was off having some more HGV entitlements put on. They wouldn't let me in even though they knew I was blatantly old enough to go in. I shouted to about 15 of my mates that promptly left. We went next door a spent a good bit of cash over the bar. Their loss.
Now I'm getting close to 30 I'd love to get asked
