It's been on the cards for ages, most European county's limits are around the 80-90mph limits
And imo it's a good idea, it might stop other drivers getting annoyed at being overtaken when doing 70 lol

Old people will still drive at 50

the bit i don't like is that the single carriageway A roads in large areas of england have suddenly been made 50 limits with no public outcry.....

they plan 20mph in town & 80 on the motorway....which is pretty much what everyone does anyway.....

The NSL and 60 drop to 50, 50 drop to 40 was tried an d tested in Warwickshire first, and it works

mowgli
30-09-11, 03:30 PM
how do you mean, it works??? yes, it pisses everyone off & slows down average speeds on good quality roads... warwickshire a roads are some of the best & least populated, the A423 from coventry to banbury is excellent, and apart from the towns it passes thru, there is not one single bit that needed a 50 limit on it.

Nebbz

Towns should be 20 imo, NSL im iffy, personally i rarely do 60 any ways as i do alot of country driving and its impossible to drive safley on these roads at these speeds 20/30 is to fast some times, you never know when theres going to be a tractor on a single lane track around the corner!

I think its a little out dated tbf 50 year old law, since then alot has changed. but i guess they will take fuel consumption at higher speeds in consideration and on that basis i bet they will refuse any changes. (on the M-Way) the rest i think needs evaluating. Im a fan of speeding as any other person is, but theres a time and a place for it as they say :/

Drop the speed on all roads with 60 to 50 and theres been less crashes on them, its worked round here.

Nebbz
30-09-11, 03:58 PM
that doesnt mean it will work any where else though? wouldnt work well here, loads of people would ignore the laws and do it any way

I though 80 was the going rate everywhere except in a 30 zone?

Seems it where I live anyway :S

I'm with Mowgli on the 60 > 50 thing. There's a load of roads round here that were NSL and are now 50 - people still do 60 on them. Sure, when its dark, foggy, belting down with rain etc then you will need to adjust your speed but thats purely driver education. Just because the limit is 60 doesn't mean you HAVE to do 60 all the time, drive to the conditions etc.

When there's a tractor in front of me (lol yes) doing 35-40mph, I'd rather be able to nip past at 60 than have to crawl by at 50. 10mph makes a big difference when you're on the wrong side of the road.

The roads I drove back on from Porton today were NSL, and here's hoping they don't get dropped to 50 - there's no way in hell I intend to do 50mph all the way along them lol

Having ten points means you have to adhere to the speed limits and the fifty thing also pisses me off, some of my favorite driving road are single nsl carriageways and I believe its a revenue generating thing

I wouldnt have thought they would be lenient at that speed tbf, it always used to be, ten percent, plus one.

So with that in mind, 78 would be the max you could do without getting pulled!

MK999

10% plus 2, is the "police guideline" but like fcuk do they stick to them.

turbojolt
30-09-11, 07:23 PM
Well let's be honest 78 on most spedos reads at 85 maybe more so by then you know your breaking the speed limit and should expect the points and or fines

Andy

At xmas i got stopped in my van doing 37 in a 30 while smoking.
Got breathalysed passed as id had nowt to drink for days anyway.
Copper said he has absolutely no intention of doing me for speeding, and said nowt about smoking lol was just solely to carch drink drivers. Was sound, i told him i couldnt wait to get to the pub and get blasted lol

Yer maybe but I still think they need a cut of point at speed some were other wise your have everyone bombing thru built up areas at god knows what speed

Jack
30-09-11, 09:57 PM
You'd probably find any amount over the limit puts you at risk, it just depends on how busy the local plod's rap sheet is looking. Gotta justify government funding for all those stickered up traffic Imprezas! lol

Stuart

tbh the only time 80 will be achievable (as a speed constant for more than 5 miles) will be in the dead of night.

Given a lot of cars efficiency drops like a stone above 120kmh then running at 80 (near 130kmh) will be rare as folks like saving money on fuel thesedays ;)
PLUS that puts a 30mph differential over HGV's and such as opposed to a 20MPH one, this will cause more crashes in the 3rd lane than ever before.

I'd say keep the 70 BUT put specs up everywhere on the motorways to make people fecking well stick to it and make the traffic flow better.

MK999
30-09-11, 10:15 PM
Up it and actually put across that you drive to the conditions not the speed limits. TBH if the world wasn't full of utter retards you could safely have 50mph limits outside schools, because obviously it's bloody stupid to try that at 3.30PM on a Monday-Friday. If it's a straight clear road at 3am on a Sunday night though, shouldn't be an issue to do 50 down there.

Start on the motorways where pedestrians aren't gonna get mowed down and no on is pulling out/coming the other way and see what happens.

turbojolt
30-09-11, 10:26 PM
Well I know I pretty much always do 75mph on motorway in the van as its limited to that so I use it as cruise control lol and I have never had a tugg for that and I will and have done it past the police on loads of occasions so I think they just might be doing this whole 10% plus one or two

Stuart
30-09-11, 10:30 PM
or they cant be arsed....

turbojolt
30-09-11, 10:32 PM
More then likely Stu ain't like I'm tailgating under cutting ect 5mph really isn't the end of the world is it

MK999
30-09-11, 10:33 PM
plus in order to prosecute they have to have speed measuring equipment in the car or follow you for so many miles keeping a steady distance to prove you're over the speed limit, unless you fire past with the exhaust roaring and make the car wobble it's hardly worth the effort is it lol

theres also the whole additional fuel revenue it will generate, if a cars ecomomy is ideal at 65mph and we call that 100%, then i swear blind that at 80 you use 20% more fuel to hold 80, and at 90 its another 30%, so if you use £50 currently go manchester to london @70mph then you can use another £28 more to do 90, great idea if you are in a derv....

ultimately we will need a minimum speed limit tho

Who actually cares?

There is no point in changing speed limits, much better driver education is required for motorway driving and thus many problems would be solved,

My biggest annoyance is cars sitting in lane 2 at 56 mph beside me
I'm in lane 1 in a left hand drive truck, massive potential for accidents,

Car drivers are very unaware of how much space and time it takes for hgv's to change lanes, merge into traffic and stopping distances,

THAT SPACE IN FRONT OF A TRUCK IT SO I CAN STOP SAFLEY NOT FOR MUPPETS TO CUT IN INFRONT OF ME!

Oh if they change the NSL and up the motorway speed they'll need to change a sh!t load of signs, at the publics cost.

this will cheer you up also, if the new limits come into force, doesent it mean that hgv's wont be allowed to overtake during rush hour periods, I swear blind i read it was 6-9am and 4-7pm, that'l make it intresting to join the M6 around 17 thru 23 not!

bazil, you of all people should know that trucks don't have to slow up to let traffic joining the motorway in.......

also about the no overtaking thingy.... the m42 between tamworth & measham & the A14 east of catthorpe are both 2 lane & both have variable overtaking bans on them.. guess what??? its crap, and i don't think it improves things much

But it does stop someone doing 54.1 mph from passing someone else doing 54.0mph and blocking the road for everyone for miles and miles and miles.....
