View Full Version : Is there any big power E/C16SEs?
I haven't been on the Nova scene long enough to know the answer and haven't see any so far.
Over the years has anyone modified the 1.6 8v to near or over 300 bhp?
Obviously it will have to be turbo'd to reach that figure.
lmfao
Nice bit of spam mr admin, now gtfo.
I dont think there has ever been a single PROPER 1.6 8v turbo build..... Dont think even the commercial bodges made over 200.
150-180 iirc, and they were probably buggered when it was cold because you can't have a colder than cold start map lol
i'm sure it could be done, as colin has close to 200bhp from his 1.0 hillclimb car, but tbh, no one in their right mind would spend the cash needed to get 300bhp from a 1.6 8v just because. if you were racing, and that was the capacity limit, then it would make more sense to spend it to remain competitive.
I reckon its possible with the 16V, but then its pretty much the 1.6 VXR engine with extras then
i'm sure that 300 is possible, but at about £30/hp its just a tad crazy spending on it
so 6 grand later and you might be there lol
Iirc the group a cars were 150 n/a and they were fast enough in the right hands,
With modern mapping and aftermarket components readily available you could see quite nice output figures, but you'd have to be a mentalist to spend the money on an old 8v unit, like I intend to lol
the £30 is a rough educated guess, but £6k would be about right for that sort of power.

Anyone seen the rolling road results in TV magazine this month, 145 odd bhp from a mildly modded E16SE, hmmm.
"Drivetrain efficiency...." er, how much did you say you thought she might have mate?

that is right up there with 'the cheque is in the post' & 'i won't come in your mouth'

Mike Cowley's 1.6 8V'T on DTA using standard pistons/rods etc was mapped to 192bhp, when Neil use to own the engine it had a better cooling system including aqua mist and made 210bhp, OK so theres a few bits like the 2ltr golf TB and some other custom parts made for it all, but theres no massive expensive parts bar the DTA, so i think you could get 250bhp with some good pistons and rods a matched port polish head and cam etc.
Mine had about 140 but that cost me a fortune to even get that far but i recon any thing is possible stick a huge turbo on and cook the crap out of it I ne a couple of rally guys with over 230bhp from a 16v n/a

Wasn't there a 1400 8v in tv said to have over 220hp after being bored out.to 1600cc?

Journos will happily exagerate anything. Much like footballers lol

A lot less than most standard XE's in TV then.
Tbh 240/260 should be easy to get via turboing, I've driven 1600 CVH escort turbo with a genuine 240 bhp, pushing for 300 would be stupid for a road car, simply toooooo much in the search to be different,
And that escort had such low compression and such a big turbo the lag was fcuking horrendous but when the boost came in it was wild lol
Big valve ported head, low comp pistons steel rods and crank, solid lifters, custom camshaft, custom inlet, decent exh mani with cav v6 or similar tb, gt28/t3 or similar and rev it high. I reckon thatd give 250-300bhp. About 10k to build engine though i reckon.
Or redtop turbo and go a holiday to the caribbean for a month with the money you save lol

There was a chap in Finland with an alleged 300bhp from his 1600cc motor, pretty sure that was on better gas than we have from our pumps & the engine was seriously worked over. It's the cost to reach such power that makes it a no brainer, esp over here where general fabrication is seen as a black-art.

200 should be easily achievable with the right knowledge & not a massive budget. Personally I think just as much emphasis needs to go into the gearbox & chassis as the Grp-A cars proved.

You're gonna get shot down for saying that term lol
is it possible...short answer is Yes....
lol sorry Paul I ment valver turbo

I thought exactly the same, gggrrrrrrrrr

Would it be better, for reliability maybe to recommend the older big-block 1600cc bottom end and associates..?

I obviously missed last time you told me, but I have always been under the impression the bodgenay turbo conversion ran a pressure switch that clicked the ECU's CTS into reading cold to get more fuel in?

i was told by craig green that not all 1.6 turbos need a trick switch, his ran with and without it iirc (correct me if im wrong though)
I guess the early ones used the 'bodge' CTS trick and the later ones might have used the less bodgier 5th injector (still bodge lol ) and some might have had a rising rate FPR
Craig always told me switch was wired in so it foooled the TPS into WOT when it came on boost
Thing is, is WOT going to fuel enough for a turbo? I don't think so. I presume a RR FPR was used as well. Aside form Craigs the others I've seen were 5th injector style.
Yeah AFPR used as well
I always thought the ones with 5 th injector were C16/14se conversions
Craig always told me switch was wired in so it foooled the TPS into WOT when it came on boost
So it melts when you're on WOT and boost? That's more bodgy than the CTS bodge lol
Nope because the fuel pressure is set higher, to what psi I can't remember
The switch is a bit of a bodge but works and is reliabe
Question?
On a turbocharged E16 where is the vacuum take of for the brake servo?
I'm thinking that when on boost you'd have no vacuum in the inlet so you can't have servo assist?
Or as usual am I wrong?

you'd go pre turbo intake for a good vacuum :)

Why would you want to brake on boost? Don't have vac (or very little) on full throttle in a naturally aspirated car either.
Ahhhhhhh, cheers stu
I was looking at me 1.7 dti combo and it seems to have a small vacuum pump on the alternator?
yep, with no throttle plate a derv creates little to no vacuum so you need a driven pump.

Left foot braking and retaining high boost,
Something I can't do on my audi due to fly by wire :(
Hopefull the N275 delete will cure that tho,
There is a one way valve on the servo anyway to prevent the problem whether you want to brake as boost comes in or not lol

Will still work as tbh you won't want to be slamming on the anchors left foot braking anyway

Did that on a driving lesson, thought my instructor was going to sue me for whiplash lol
^^^^ Flol
Mark it's just one of those " what if's " my brain if full of them, I've been told I can't do anymore risk assessments at work as I go to far into it lol
Phazer I have a spare one of those, I'll test it someday to see what its pressure fail point is lol

I know the owner, was stupidly fast, from what i recall it made a quarter mile in the region of 11 seconds at PVS, thats assuming its the same car, this was turbo'd
so its not a 1.4 if its been bored to 1.6 lol bit like someones '1.3' on here that was really a 1.4 after a rebore but was still peddled as being a 1.3 lol
