Just started pulling my 02 plate Astra Coupe apart for spares.
I was rather dismayed at the amount of rust hiding behind the bumper and underneath on the floor pan, plus there must be about 3kg of mud behind the arch liners!
This does not give the Vauxhall galvanising treatment a good name - the car is only 9 years old !

If anyone wants any parts - let me know - rust is also supplied free of charge!
Joff
Aren't they suppose to be made out of galvanised?
Neither of mine had rust though, one was 51 and other 02

It's never lived near the sea either - its spent most of its life in either Lambourne, Herefordshire or the West Midlands.

Did it have Xenons as standard?
What condition is the chrome boot strip in?

Is Vauxhalls anti corrosion warranty not for ten years? Take it back to them for a giggle!
Joff, what on earth are you doing breaking it! lol

They obviously don't galvanise on Monday cars lol
You Vauxhall boys are still spoilt. You honestly will never see serious rust with an 80's/90's+ Vaux! lol

Certain model years came with 12 years AFAIK. I was going to Waxoyl mine when I first got it but when I checked it on the ramp at work I found the original rust protection was very well applied. Mine is spotless underneath but its only done just over 6.5k miles

joff: there is a metal bracket rivited under the passenger seat which holds the lateral motion sensor for the traction control
i need one for my van. ive ordered one from gm but having trouble coming through. its only £3.60 odd plus the vat. would you drill the 4 rivets and post me the metal bracket only for a fiver? there is nothing to it as you will see..
let me know.. thanks

What engine is in it?
Z20LET which is mechanically sound - its getting put into the corner of my garage until I decide what I am going to do with it!
Joff

Joff, what on earth are you doing breaking it! lol
To be honest its far from a gleaming example of the marque - its got dents all round with a few keying scratches and as you see from the pictures is rather rusty. Its worth more in parts than as a whole and as I have a bit of time on my hands over the next few weeks I am pulling it apart.
Joff
I may be interested in disassembling one of these also lol Mind PMing me with what parts are worth money and rough values Joff? Is it because it's a coupe turbo it's worth it, or is general/standard stuff worth cash too?
Looks like most Evo 6's lol lol
That aint rust?!!
Ive shaved with rustier blades than that! lol

This 'galvanised' steel is a bit misleading. The sheet steel they make the body pressings from is usually zinc coated at the steel works. So edges, spotwelds & interesting press marks lose their zinc pretty quickly... Also if the car has been used in the south midlands, it will have seen a heap of road salt. Also i don't think its too rusty for its age
6 years anti corrosion on a mk4 astra ,
and i took mine back at about 5 1/2 years only to be told that it has to have its full service history and body work checks for it to be valid ,
so not worth the paper its written on lol
Ahh the famous guarantee... But not only has it got to have a full dealer service history & annual body checks, any work they pick up on, as in minor knocks, scratches etc. Must be fixed by them immediately.....
Its been modified into the new lifetime one, where if you complain, they shoot you

same as zintec sheet...random metal fact lol
Looks like its just aged a bit worse than expected to me. My 3rd hatch aint got any rust anywhere underneath etc and thats 12years old.
And just a quick glance on mig/aoc shows why people break these, its how the "regular sellers" on there make their living!! lol
Picking up sub grand cars and selling engine alone on for £1400... ETC

30 year corrosion guarantee on my old mans motor. Same deal applies!
What exhaust is on it? Standard?

Standard front and midsection with a hatchback stainless back box as the tailpipes are too short for the coupe.

I took the side skirts off yesterday - there must have been about 4kg per side of soil - I could have grown my spuds in the sills !:eek:

TBH I do think thats quite bad for an 02 reg.
My van is on 02 reg and isnt any where near as bad as that! Infact, its not even rusting anywhere, not even any bubbles :S
its amazing what bumpers and plastic trims can hide, i suppose they just hold all that moisture and dirt in there. thats surprising tbh
