so i did a deal with the seller and picked up last weekend. all excited on the way up i was just hoping it was usable and not something cobbled together with pigeon poo.
to be fair the work so far is pretty tidy, and thankfully the lad could weld. phew!! so we loaded it up

so today was the first chance ive had to play. i basically started bolting bits on, lights, bumpers etc as everything was stored in the car. it also has given me a chance to see whats missing/not usable and get a list together. ive got a wide arch kit on the way so i can work out what offset wheels i can use. im also in talks with a local firm to sort some carbon panels which i can sort a group buy for you guys if theres enough interest. 6 point cage is on the way so i can sort out stitching some more strength into the back end.

this may have to come out as i think the hoop of the cage will interfere and i think its going to be too close to the engine. ill get a seat in first and see how far forward i can come with something

little bit of rust on the o/s leg but its repairable

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/alexdarcy/rear%20engined%20nova/304042_10150300843856984_716856983_8042534_1745590 951_n.jpg

mk2 astra setup in the rear

possibly going to review the silver bars, they need to be moved further back to get the track rods at a better angle and i think making them removable will help when working on it

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/alexdarcy/rear%20engined%20nova/298747_10150300844811984_716856983_8042543_1201601 081_n.jpg

how it looked at end of play today

things im thinking of how to overcome so far,
brakes.. should i run v6 all round and bias them, sack servo and link bar off and fit a pedal box??
gearbox.. im running an f28 so thinking of converting to hydraulic clutch and get a cable change set up off an mr2/mgf/elise/vx220 then adapt a linkage from cables to the box

any ideas and views peeps have post up as im open to help on these

Looking good so far :)

Have you been on mig and looked at chips?

Think there is some controversy over using a front setup in the rear.

darcy
25-09-11, 12:28 AM
cheers man. yeah ive spoken to chip on facebook about a few issues im trying to overcome. its going to be a budget build hopefully so all wont be lost if it doesnt perform

so it was you that bought it, bit of a bargin i thought, are you going to be using the mk3 astra coilover front struts? because if not i would like them please :)

Benn

I was about to say, seeing the cars you've built before this one should be a bit awesome.

darcy
27-09-11, 10:44 PM
I'll run the coilovers on the rear for now. But the coilovers were one of the reasons I bought it as I could use them on my mk2 Astra lol. I don't think it's going to b a show stopper. I want to get the basics right before I get it painted up etc

right ive had quite a busy week. i got the let out of the astra, moved the astra to my house and brought the nova to my girlfriend's house as i pretty much live there now. so this way i can get an hour or two between when i finish work and when my girlfriend does..

anyway i shot home from work yesterday and decided the engine was going in so here it is in its new engine bay/boot

sorry for the poor quality pics.. well what an absolute s**t this was to get in!! just really awkward to jack up and theres no access.. think im going to do the rear brace bars and bulkhead removable to make it easier in the future.. well thats that. nice day today so ill update tonight with todays progress. this is still mock up by the way

That looks mental. I like the idea, Gear linkage may be hard work but at least you have plenty of space to work with.

jonn
01-10-11, 07:38 PM
good work, i will have to drop out the subframe on my one to get the engine and box out, room can get tight!

darcy
08-10-11, 11:32 PM
right ive sorted a throttle cable out, just trying to find a cable change linkage long enough, as most mid engined cars are 2 seaters :( then ill look into adapting it abd a hydraulic clutch.
rollcage is in, ive cut the rear section out so the bars can be rewelded at a different angle to pick up on the rear strut tops.

my wide arch protec kit came on fri. must be honest im not impressed with the quality. the rear 1/4s are pretty good but the wings are gash. panel fit to the door is workable but there is no section under the bumper so the bumper has nothing to bolt to on the sides, also the leading edge's profile is a mile out where the indicator should be. my mate who does the carbon is willing to make me a kit though so if a nasty phone call to protec on monday doesnt get me some discount on perspex for it, they'll be having it back.
anyway i had a play with different wheels....

i thought the comps were going to look awesome but i was a bit disappointed when i got them on, i think the curve on the spokes doesnt suit the aggressive look of the arches. think the original rims that came with the car get my vote. ill prob go a bright colour for the rims and replicate it through the car, the shells going black, i fancy a lairy orange set of rims and matching cage/rocker cover etc, or do the complete interior a matching colour to the rims. i dont know, colour is a mile off yet but i can dream, cheers

Arches look good, but see what you mean about the fronts, the indicator lump is laughable.

darcy
09-10-11, 07:55 PM
yep. i must admit i still prefer the mk1 front and the wings may be designed for mk1 but the pics on the ebay listing are of a mk2 so thats gonna be my argument tomorrow, plus the fact that there is nothing below the bumper for the bumper to bolt to.. watch this space

Nobby

looks ace on mos imo

Mike
09-10-11, 10:10 PM
plus the fact that there is nothing below the bumper for the bumper to bolt to.. watch this space

Theres a reason for that. Your also forgetting this kit was never really designed with road cars in mind, even the wide archs I make an sell are same behind the bumper.

Good luck trying to get a refund on it though lol you'll need it lol

darcy
15-10-11, 10:42 PM
cheers guys. well protec are willing to give me a small refund, but im now wondering if the wings would adapt to mk1 easier, but ive just sorted a few sets of mk2 lights to make a good set, and a gsi bumper. so im on the lookout for mk1 bumpers, grill, lights etc. ive got a celica vvti gearstick n cables on the way so we'll see if they are adaptable

mike those wings look awesome, what do you sell them for? cheers
